Mechanical Digital Locks

The battery-free alternative to everything in this guide so far. How the coding chamber works, Lockwood vs Borg vs Carbine, gates and pool barriers, commercial duty, code changing — and what these locks honestly will not do.

Every chapter before this one has covered smart locks — electronic locks with batteries, apps, and credentials. This chapter covers their older, simpler relative: the mechanical digital lock, often shortened to mech-digi. It has a keypad, but no batteries, no electronics, and no app. The code is verified by machined metal parts inside the lock, using a design that has been in continuous service since 1965. For gates, storerooms, pool fences, commercial back-of-house doors, and anywhere a flat battery is unacceptable, it remains the lock the trade reaches for first.

What Is a Mechanical Digital Lock?

A mechanical digital lock is a keypad lock in which everything happens mechanically. Behind the buttons sits a coding chamber — a stack of coded tumblers, one per button. Pressing the correct buttons moves the correct tumblers into alignment; only then can the handle turn and retract the latch. There is no circuit board, no motor, and nothing to power. One detail surprises almost everyone: the code is entered in any order. Because each button simply moves its own tumbler, 1346 and 6431 are the same code — and each button can be used only once per code. That has real security implications, covered honestly in how the codes actually work. The design traces back to the Unican 1800 of 1965, and sixty years of continuous use is itself the strongest reliability evidence a lock can offer.

Why are they called “digital” if there are no electronics?
The name predates the electronic sense of the word: digit means finger. A digital lock is one you operate with your fingers on buttons, as opposed to a key. The terminology confuses buyers daily — if a product is described as a “digital lock” in Australia, check whether it takes batteries before assuming anything else about it.
Mechanical vs Smart — Which Do You Need?

This is the fork in the road, and it is a genuine trade — not an upgrade path. A smart lock buys you credentials, logs, and remote control at the cost of batteries and complexity. A mechanical digital lock buys you near-total reliability at the cost of flexibility.

The whole value proposition in one sentence
A mechanical digital lock cannot lock you out with a flat battery, cannot drop off WiFi, and cannot be abandoned by an app vendor — because it has none of those things. What it asks in exchange is that everyone shares one code and nobody needs an entry log.
Latch or Bolt?

Mechanical digital locks come in two formats, and the choice matters more than most buyers expect. A latch is bevelled and sprung — the door or gate secures itself the moment it closes. A bolt is square-ended and must be deliberately thrown; it secures nothing until somebody turns it. Lockwood, Borg & Carbine — The Three Ranges

Terry’s stocks three mechanical digital ranges, and they are genuinely different tools rather than interchangeable badges. The three brand stories explain where each maker comes from; here is the working summary.

The Australian workhorse. The 530DX is the commercial staple, the 002DX adds brute-force deadlatch resistance in four configurations, and the DX keypad converts standard mortice locks — the trade route for commercial doors.

The outdoor specialist. An independent UK maker, 100% battery-free, with the deepest gate range and the strongest published corrosion numbers — Marine Grade Pro finishes are rated beyond 1,000 hours of salt spray testing.

The heavy duty pick. The CDL7100 and CDL7200 are cycle tested past 50,000 operations and fire tested for commercial doors. The CDL7100 offers holdback; the CDL7200 does not — a split that decides the model for many sites.

Corrosion resistance, honestly compared
Borg publishes 1,000+ hour salt spray results (AS 4145.2 class C10 Extreme); Carbine publishes 240 hours (C7 High). Both are published test reports — which is more than most keypad locks on the market can say — and C7 is genuinely capable for most exposed installs. Decoding Borg Names — MG Pro & ECP

Borg product names carry their specification in the suffix, and two terms do most of the work. MG Pro means Marine Grade Pro — the coating and marine stainless internals behind those 1,000+ hour salt spray results. ECP means Easicode Pro — on-door code changing with a change key, in roughly 30 seconds. They are independent features: a lock can carry one, both, or neither, and a coastal gate usually wants both.

Passage Mode & Holdback Mode

Many mechanical digital locks offer one of two free-access functions, and they behave differently in ways that matter. Passage mode unlocks the handle so no code is needed, while the latch keeps working — the door still closes and latches normally. Holdback mode holds the latch retracted, so the door or gate cannot latch at all. Business hours, deliveries, and busy periods are the classic uses; the Carbine split noted above (CDL7100 has holdback, CDL7200 does not) is the most common catch when specifying.

Never use holdback on a fire door
A fire door must be able to close and latch at all times. Holding the latch retracted defeats the door’s entire purpose, and manufacturer documentation states the exclusion plainly. This is the category’s one hard exclusion — the full ruling is in never on a fire door. Gates — Where Mech-Digi Dominates

Gates are the category’s home ground. A gate has no wiring, lives in the weather, and is exactly where a flat battery causes the most grief — which is why almost every keypad you see on an Australian gate is mechanical. (The lone smart-lock exception for exposed gates in our range is the Ascot double-sided smart lock.) Three gate realities need planning before you order:

Pool safety barrier gates — two rules cover it
First: bolts are not allowed on pool barrier gates. A barrier gate must self-close and self-latch from any open position; a bolt secures nothing until thrown, and left extended while the gate is open it jams against the strike so the gate cannot close. Second: a self-latching latch lock works — and holdback is fine — so long as a compliant self-latching pool latch (such as the D&D MagnaLatch) is fitted and performing the barrier’s self-latching. The mechanical digital lock is access control only, never the barrier latch. Commercial & Heavy Duty

A staff door cycling hundreds of times a day is a different engineering problem to a home side gate, and “heavy duty” has a real definition: published cycle ratings, stronger coding chambers and buttons, and internals built for constant use. What heavy duty actually means sets the benchmark — the Carbine CDL7 series, for example, is cycle tested past 50,000 operations. Four compliance questions then decide the commercial specification:

Changing the Code

Every mechanical digital lock can be recoded — the effort is what varies, and it varies by design rather than by brand quality. The four methods compared: Borg Easicode Pro (ECP) models change on the door in about 30 seconds with a change key; standard Borg chambers and Lockwood DX locks share a bench procedure — the lock comes off and the coded tumblers are physically rearranged; and Carbine CDL7 locks use slider switches on the back of the keypad, set before fitting.

The realistic times, from field experience rather than brochures: an ECP change takes under a minute; a first bench recode takes about 30 minutes; a practised one takes 5 to 10. The one rule that prevents lockouts
Test the new code at least five times with the door or gate open before you let it close. Borg puts this in its instructions; Carbine prints it in capitals. It is the difference between a five-minute job and a locksmith call-out — the three rules before you start cover the rest.
What These Locks Will Not Do

Trade-grade advice includes the limits. A mechanical digital lock uses one shared code — there are no individual user codes, no scheduled or one-time codes, no entry log, and no remote anything. If a code leaks, you recode the lock, and everyone learns the new code. Codes also cannot be too long: practical chambers run 3 to 7 digits, entered in any order. None of this is a fault — it is the price of a lock with nothing electronic to fail — but it rules the category out wherever audit trails or per-person access control are requirements.
