FK Surf Standard Keysafe – 4-Dial Combination Lock – Black
The FK Surf Standard Keysafe is a portable, shackle-mount combination key safe designed for beach, surf, and outdoor use. It attaches to a tow point, tow bar, or roof rack and lets you secure a mechanical key against the vehicle while you swim, surf, or exercise – without leaving keys in your shoes or under a wheel arch.
The case is constructed from hardened metal with a foam-backed interior that cushions and protects the key. A twin locking mechanism secures the compartment door. The 4-dial combination lock offers 10,000 possible code combinations, and the combination is user-set with no default factory code. The compartment measures 70mm × 72mm × 29mm – suited to a single mechanical car key or a small key group.
The Standard Keysafe does not include an RFID signal-blocking wallet. For owners of modern vehicles with proximity (smart key) fobs, this means storing the fob itself in the Standard creates an unmitigated relay attack risk. The Standard is designed for use with a conventional mechanical surf key – a door-only cut key – not a smart fob. Owners of smart key vehicles should consider the FK Surf Deluxe Keysafe, which includes an RFID signal-blocking wallet, or arrange a mechanical surf key to be cut before using the Standard.
The Standard Keysafe does not include an RFID signal-blocking wallet. Storing a proximity smart key fob inside leaves it vulnerable to relay attack – thieves can use signal amplifiers to open and start the vehicle. Use the Standard with a mechanical surf key only. If you have a smart key vehicle, see the FK Surf Deluxe Keysafe (includes RFID wallet) or ask Terry's about cutting a mechanical surf key.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I store my car's smart key fob in the Standard Keysafe?
No – and this is important. Modern proximity key fobs broadcast a radio signal continuously. Without an RFID signal-blocking wallet (not included in the Standard), a fob stored in this keysafe remains detectable by relay attack equipment. Thieves can use two-person signal amplifiers to relay the fob's signal from the keysafe into the car, unlocking and starting the vehicle as if the fob were present. The Standard is designed for mechanical surf keys only – a door-only cut key that has no radio signal. If you have a smart key vehicle, use the FK Surf Deluxe Keysafe, which includes a tested RFID signal-blocking wallet, or ask Terry's about cutting a mechanical surf key before going to the beach.
I've forgotten my combination – can I get it back?
No. There is no master override key, no manufacturer recovery code, and no electronic reset on this keysafe. If the combination is forgotten, physical force is the only way to open the unit – which will damage or destroy it. Write your combination down and store it somewhere secure at home before using the keysafe for the first time.
Where is the best place to attach the keysafe on my car?
Attach it out of direct sight, in a hard-to-access position. Under the towbar, inside the tow ball receiver socket (if your vehicle has a receiver-style hitch), or on an inner roof rack rail are common choices. Avoid attaching it to the front bumper or anywhere visible from the road or carpark – a visible keysafe signals to a thief that there is a key on the car. The shackle suits most standard tow points and tow bar apertures; confirm the shackle fits your attachment point before committing to a position.
How do I maintain the keysafe after beach use?
Rinse the entire unit with fresh water after each beach session to remove salt crystals. Pay particular attention to the combination dials – salt can crystallise in the dial gaps and cause the mechanism to stiffen. After rinsing, apply a small amount of WD-40 or equivalent water-displacing lubricant to the dial mechanism. Allow the unit to dry fully before storing. Regular maintenance significantly extends the life of the dial mechanism in salt-air environments.
What's the difference between the Standard and the Deluxe?
The core keysafe hardware is the same – 4-dial combination, twin locking, hardened metal case, foam-backed interior. The differences are: the Deluxe has a slightly larger compartment (70 × 75 × 35mm with an additional 50 × 15mm section, vs 70 × 72 × 29mm on the Standard), and the Deluxe includes an RFID signal-blocking wallet and an LED torch/bottle opener keychain. The $16.72 price difference reflects those inclusions. If you have a smart key vehicle and want to store the fob, the Deluxe is the only one suitable.
Additional Information
FK Surf's own documentation states this directly, and it is worth repeating. No portable keysafe is impenetrable given sufficient time and the right tools. The value of a keysafe at the beach is that it is significantly better than the alternatives – keys in your shoes, under a wheel, or in your boardshorts. It raises the time and effort required to a level that deters most opportunistic theft. For additional deterrence, consider a secondary security measure such as a steering lock, particularly for high-value vehicles.
A mechanical surf key (sometimes called a beach key or door-only key) is a conventionally cut metal key that operates the car door lock cylinder only – no transponder chip, no radio fob, no proximity function. It opens the door but does not start the engine. Modern vehicles with proximity smart keys often still have a physical key cylinder on the driver's door, which can accept a mechanically cut key. Terry's can cut a mechanical surf key from your vehicle key code for a small charge. This is the recommended strategy for surf beach use: leave the smart fob at home, secure the mechanical key in the Standard Keysafe on the car.
The internal compartment measures 70mm long × 72mm wide × 29mm deep. A standard mechanical car key (without a bulky fob head) fits comfortably. A key with a small transponder head (non-proximity type) will usually fit depending on its specific dimensions – check the key against these measurements before purchasing. Bulkier proximity smart key fobs may not fit within 29mm depth and, as noted above, should not be stored in the Standard regardless of whether they physically fit. If you need more compartment depth, the Deluxe provides 35mm. See our surf key lock box guide for more on selecting the right keysafe for your vehicle type.
The weatherproof cover on the combination dials provides protection during normal surf and beach use, but the unit is not sealed to a specified ingress protection rating. Do not submerge the keysafe. In high-humidity coastal environments where the keysafe is left on the vehicle between trips, rinse and lubricate the dials regularly even when the unit has not been directly exposed to water. Salt air alone will crystallise in unlubricated mechanisms over time.
