Yale Z-Wave 700 (Gen7) Network Module for Assure Locks - Green

Smart Lock Accessory - Not a Complete Lock
This is the Z-Wave 700 series network module that plugs into a compatible Yale Assure lock. It is not a lock, a gateway, or a hub. If you are looking for a complete keyless lock, see the Yale Assure Keyed Deadbolt, Yale Assure Lock SL, or the Yale Assure Keyed Lever. A compatible Z-Wave hub (such as Samsung SmartThings or Ring) is required separately - this module does not add Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Yale Home App control.

The Yale Z-Wave 700 (Gen7) Network Module (YRD-ZWM-2) is the upgraded Z-Wave add-on for the Yale Assure lock range, replacing the discontinued YRD-ZWM-1. It slides into the same module bay as the previous module and gives any compatible Assure lock integration with Z-Wave certified smart home systems - including Samsung SmartThings, Ring, Alarm.com, and any certified Z-Wave controller.

The jump from the 500-series (Gen5) YRD-ZWM-1 to the 700-series (Gen7) YRD-ZWM-2 brings meaningful improvements: Yale cites a 46% increase in wireless range and 20% better battery performance (the module draws power from the host lock's batteries), along with mandatory S2 encryption and SmartStart QR-code provisioning for faster, more secure setup. The module is backward-compatible, so it works inside an existing 500-series Z-Wave mesh without forcing an upgrade of the rest of the network.

Key Features

  • Z-Wave 700 series (Gen7) chip - the current generation of Z-Wave technology, succeeding the 500-series Gen5 YRD-ZWM-1
  • 46% greater wireless range than the 500-series predecessor, supporting larger homes and longer runs through walls
  • 20% improvement in battery efficiency - the module runs off the host lock's batteries; less current draw extends overall lock battery life
  • S2 mandatory security - the Z-Wave 700 platform requires S2 (AES-128) encryption on all certified devices; cannot be downgraded to unencrypted pairing
  • SmartStart provisioning - scan the module's QR code in a SmartStart-capable hub app for inclusion without placing the lock in manual inclusion mode
  • Backward-compatible - works inside an existing 500-series Z-Wave mesh; no need to upgrade every other device on the network
  • Same physical format as the YRD-ZWM-1 - slides into the same module bay on all compatible Assure locks, no tools required
  • Colour-coded green for identification alongside the red Zigbee module (YRD-ZBM-1) and the white Yale Home Module (YD-MD01)
  • No separate power source - draws power from the host lock; no additional batteries or cabling required

Installation

Installation follows the same steps as the earlier module. Remove the host lock's battery cover, lift out any existing module, seat the YRD-ZWM-2 in the module slot, and replace the battery cover. The lock detects the module automatically.

To add to your Z-Wave network (manual inclusion): Put your Z-Wave hub into inclusion mode, then at the lock keypad enter the Master PIN code followed by the inclusion key sequence. The lock will confirm when the module has been enrolled.

SmartStart (700-series feature): If your hub supports SmartStart, scan the QR code printed on the module label before installing it. Once the module is seated, the hub pairs it automatically - no manual inclusion mode required.

One module at a time
The Assure lock's module bay holds one module only. If a Yale Home Module (YD-MD01) or Zigbee module (YRD-ZBM-1) is already fitted, remove it first. You cannot run Z-Wave and Zigbee (or Z-Wave and the Yale Home Module) simultaneously in the same lock.

Which Module Do You Need?

The Yale Assure range supports three different internal modules, each targeting a different smart home setup. Only one can be fitted at a time.

Module Colour Platform App
Yale Home Module (YD-MD01) White Yale Home App / Apple HomeKit Yale Home App
Yale Zigbee Module (YRD-ZBM-1) Red Third-party Zigbee (SmartThings, etc.) Hub manufacturer's app
Yale Z-Wave 700 Module (YRD-ZWM-2) - This Product Green Third-party Z-Wave (SmartThings, Ring, etc.) Hub manufacturer's app

For a detailed comparison of Zigbee and Z-Wave for this lock family, see our Yale Network Modules guide - Zigbee vs Z-Wave.

Fits These Yale Assure Locks

The YRD-ZWM-2 fits into the same module bay as the previous module and is compatible with the Yale Assure locks we stock. Fits the same hosts as the Zigbee module.

What's in the Box

  • Yale Z-Wave 700 (Gen7) Network Module - Green (YRD-ZWM-2)

No hub, batteries, or lock included. A compatible Z-Wave certified hub is required separately.

Suitable Uses

  • Adding your Yale Assure lock to an existing Z-Wave smart home system (SmartThings, Ring Alarm, Alarm.com, ADT and other certified Z-Wave platforms)
  • Replacing a discontinued YRD-ZWM-1 (500-series) module in an Assure lock already integrated with a Z-Wave network
  • Upgrading to the 700-series for improved range or more reliable pairing in larger homes or those with concrete or brick walls between the lock and hub
  • Installations where a third-party alarm or building management system requires Z-Wave rather than Zigbee

This module does not add Yale Home App, Apple HomeKit, or Bluetooth control. If Yale's own app or Apple HomeKit is the goal, the Yale Home Module (YD-MD01) is the correct choice. For the full range of Yale Assure accessories, visit the Modules and WiFi Gateways category.

Available Finish Options

  • Green

The green body is a colour-coding aid for identifying which module is fitted; the module is concealed inside the lock once installed and not visible on the finished door. Finish does not affect functionality or compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this replace my existing YRD-ZWM-1 (green) module?
Yes. The YRD-ZWM-2 fits the same module bay and is a direct replacement for the discontinued 500-series YRD-ZWM-1. Swap the module out, then re-pair with your hub (the lock will appear as a new device to the hub). Your lock settings are stored in the lock itself and are not affected by the module swap.
Which Z-Wave hubs work with this module?
Any hub that is certified for Z-Wave Plus v2 (the 700-series platform) will work. Common AU-available options include Samsung SmartThings, Ring Alarm, Alarm.com, and ADT. Older 500-series hubs that support Z-Wave Plus v1 will also pair with this module, though you will not get the full 700-series range benefit on the hub side. Check your hub's Z-Wave certification before purchasing.
Can I use this module and the Yale Home Module at the same time?
No. The Assure lock has a single module bay. Fitting the Z-Wave module displaces any existing module - you can run either Z-Wave or the Yale Home App ecosystem (via the Yale Home Module), but not both. If you need Yale Home App control and Z-Wave integration simultaneously, the Yale Connect Plus Hub 2 can bridge the gap on certain platforms - but that requires the Home Module, not this one.
Does this module work with the Yale Unity Entrance Lock or Unity Slim?
No. The YRD-ZWM-2 fits only the Assure series module bay (YRD226, YRD256, YRL226). The Unity range uses a different internal architecture and does not have a module bay. For Unity locks, connectivity is provided via the Yale Connect Plus Hub 2.

Additional Information

Z-Wave 700 vs 500: what actually changes at the lock
The 700-series chip delivers a claimed 46% improvement in wireless range and 20% less current draw than the 500-series predecessor. In practice for most residential installations the range difference is rarely the deciding factor - it matters most in larger homes with dense masonry between the lock and hub. The efficiency gain is more universally useful: because the module draws from the lock's batteries, less draw means the lock's batteries last longer. S2 mandatory encryption is a genuine security improvement over the Gen5 optional-S2 approach.
Z-Wave vs Zigbee for Assure locks
Both the Z-Wave module (this product) and the Zigbee module (YRD-ZBM-1) provide third-party home automation integration for Assure locks - neither adds the Yale Home App. The main practical difference is which hub platform you already have: if your system is Z-Wave (Ring Alarm, many alarm panels), use this module; if it is Zigbee (Amazon Echo with Zigbee hub, some SmartThings configurations), use the Zigbee module. SmartThings supports both protocols, so the module choice there depends on the rest of your device mesh. For a detailed comparison, see our Yale Network Modules guide.
AU/NZ frequency
This module operates on the sub-GHz band approved for Z-Wave in Australia and New Zealand under AS/NZS 4268 - 919.8 MHz and 921.4 MHz. It is not compatible with Z-Wave devices tuned for the US 908/916 MHz band or the EU 868 MHz band. Only source Z-Wave devices certified for the Australian market.
