The McGrath ASCOT is a double-sided digital smart gate lock designed for Australian external applications - residential and commercial gates, timber doors, and aluminium doors - where access control is required simultaneously from both sides. It sits at the heart of our external gate smart locks (exposed to rain) range. Because both handles carry the electronic lock, the ASCOT closes a critical security gap common on standard gate locks: no one can reach through, over, or between gate slats to operate the latch from the opposite side.
Four access methods are supported: keypad PIN, RFID credentials, Bluetooth eKey via the McGrath Locks App, and a mechanical key override. Both handles carry IP66-rated housings for full exposure to dust and high-pressure water, making the ASCOT equally at home on louvred and solid-panel gates in exposed outdoor settings. Each handle is independently powered by 4 x AAA batteries, so if one side runs low, the other continues to operate. Remote management is available via an optional McGrath Wi-Fi gateway.

The McGrath ASCOT is the only digital smart lock we are aware of in Australia that is designed specifically for pedestrian gates. Unlike standard door smart locks, the ASCOT's double-sided IP66-rated housings are built for full outdoor exposure - making it the only product we know of that is genuinely suitable for installation on pedestrian gates in the rain.

The ASCOT supports four credential types, including app-managed PIN codes that can be set as permanent, time-limited, or one-time passcodes. Battery, Power & Backup Access

- Low battery alerts provided audibly at the lock and within the McGrath Locks App.

- The battery-compartment covers use a 2.0 mm triangle screw; the matching McGrath Ascot triangle screwdriver is available as a spare servicing tool.
- Mechanical key override provides emergency access if electronic power is unavailable - spare Ascot key blanks and keyed-alike override cylinders are available separately.
Wi-Fi Remote Access (Optional)
This smart lock does not include native Wi-Fi connectivity. Remote access and management features are available only when the lock is paired with a compatible McGrath Locks gateway. When a gateway is installed, users can remotely unlock the gate, issue or revoke access credentials, and view access activity through the McGrath Locks App from anywhere with an internet connection.
Three McGrath gateways suit the ASCOT: the G3 with Power-over-Ethernet, the G4 with 4G SIM slot (ideal where the gate is beyond Wi-Fi reach), and the dual-band G5; a 240V USB wall adaptor is available to power them. The gateway connects to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. If your router merges its 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands under one name, this can interrupt the connection - see Chapter 08 - the Wi-Fi band-steering problem before installing. Frequently Asked Questions
No. The lock operates locally via Bluetooth using the McGrath Locks App without any internet connection. Remote access and remote unlocking require an optional Wi-Fi gateway.
The ASCOT is an electronic smart gate lock and is not certified as a pool fence gate latch under Australian Standard AS 1926.1. If your pool gate must comply with AS 1926.1, confirm with your local council or pool fence certifier before ordering. Confirm gate thickness (35-55 mm) and ensure the 60 mm backset is achievable from the gate edge before ordering. Installation should be carried out by a qualified locksmith or follow the supplied installation guide carefully. Both handles carry an IP66 rating, providing resistance to dust ingress and high-pressure water jets. This makes the ASCOT suitable for fully exposed outdoor gate positions. The ASCOT uses AAA batteries (not AA) - 4 per handle, 8 in total. The two handles are independently powered, so a flat battery on one side does not disable the other. Access credentials are retained during battery replacement.

Gate Suitability & Compliance
Almost all smart locks are door locks: the interior side is unsealed electronics or a plain thumbturn, and neither survives weather nor stops someone reaching over or through the gate to open it. The ASCOT is purpose-built for gates - both sides are full IP66-rated electronic keypads, so the "inside" of the gate is just as secure and just as weatherproof as the outside. Not as the compliance latch. The ASCOT is not certified under AS 1926.1, the Australian Standard for swimming pool safety barriers, so it cannot replace a certified pool gate latch. Many owners fit the ASCOT for access control alongside a compliant magnetic pool latch - but if you do, first read why magnetic gate latches can be problematic with digital locks, and confirm the combined setup with your pool fence certifier.
No to both. It is not fire rated (do not fit it to a fire-rated doorset - see Chapter 05 - Fire Door Smart Locks) and it is not assessed against AS 1428.1 for DDA-compliant accessible entries. It is designed for residential and commercial gates and external doors where those requirements do not apply.
Both handles are IP66-rated aluminium alloy housings with tempered glass touchscreens, rated -20°C to 70°C. The current Matt Black variant carries LSC's upgraded design with substantially enhanced sun and water tolerance. Access Methods & Codes

Anti-peep scrambling randomises the position of the digits on the touchscreen each time it wakes, so a smudge pattern or an onlooker can't reconstruct your PIN. After 5 incorrect attempts the keypad locks out for 35 seconds, defeating rapid guessing. Both run automatically - nothing to configure.
No. The mechanical key override opens the lock with no electronic power at all. Because each handle is independently powered, a total lockout would need both sides flat plus no key - keep a spare cut from a genuine Ascot key blank, or fit a keyed-alike cylinder to match multiple ASCOTs to one key. Wi-Fi, Gateways & Remote Access
Gates are often at the edge of Wi-Fi range, so pick by site: the G3 with PoE if you can run an Ethernet cable toward the gate; the G4 with 4G SIM slot where there's no fixed internet near the gate at all; or the dual-band G5 on a normal home network. Between the router and the lock, within reliable Bluetooth range of the lock - typically inside the nearest wall of the house or garage facing the gate. Solid brick and metal cladding reduce range. Placement guidance is in Chapter 08 - gateway placement; if a paired gateway keeps dropping offline, work through smart locks dropping off Wi-Fi and check for the band-steering problem.
Yes. Bluetooth is the lock's native management channel: standing at the gate with the McGrath Locks App you can add users, issue codes, review the audit trail and unlock - no internet, no gateway, no subscription. App Platform & Ecosystem
The McGrath Locks app is a customised, McGrath-branded build of the TT Lock platform, managed, supported and distributed locally in Australia. Every access event - which credential (PIN, RFID, eKey) was used and when - viewable in the McGrath Locks App. Via Bluetooth the log syncs when you're at the gate; with a gateway it updates remotely in near real time. Useful for tradie access on job sites, cleaner access on short-stays, and confirming the kids got home.
Installation & Hardware
Three things: gate/door thickness (must be 35-55 mm - how to measure thickness), stile width for the 60 mm backset (how to measure backset, and the practical guide to measuring your lock backset), and clearance for the 75 mm lock roses. A 70 mm backset alternate latch is available.
Often yes, with planning. The supplied latch needs a 60 mm backset, which narrow steel-frame gates sometimes can't give. Options and workarounds - including frame extensions and latch alternatives - are covered in Gate post too narrow for a 60 mm latch? Measure the stile before ordering.
A competent DIYer with the supplied drill template can fit the ASCOT to a timber gate; steel and aluminium frame gates are less forgiving and a locksmith is worth the call-out. Use quality alkalines; avoid cheap zinc-carbon cells and rechargeables, whose voltage curves confuse low-battery warnings. Expect roughly 12 months at 10 uses a day, with audible and in-app low-battery alerts well before flat, and all credentials retained through every battery change.
The battery-compartment covers use tamper-resistant 2.0 mm triangle screws - a deliberate deterrent on a lock that lives on the public side of a gate. One security tool is supplied in the box; the magnetic-tip McGrath Ascot triangle screwdriver is available as a spare - worth keeping with the batteries so it's findable in year two.

How to Make a Claim
- Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries (the place of purchase) within the applicable warranty period.
- Supply your proof of original purchase - a receipt or tax invoice is required.
- Provide a clear description of the fault and your contact details.
- You may be asked to return the product for assessment before a remedy is determined.
- McGrath Locks will, at their discretion, repair the product, replace it with the same or an equivalent model, or provide a refund of the purchase price.
Exclusions
This warranty does not cover:
- Normal wear and tear
- Products that have been disassembled
- Damage caused by improper handling, incorrect installation, misuse, abuse, neglect, modification, or accident
- Installation by unlicensed persons (including non-licensed locksmiths or technicians)
- Products not used in accordance with the supplied instructions
- Cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality
- Labour or installation costs related to the removal or reinstallation of products
- Exposure to conditions outside normal environmental use
- Work completed before warranty approval
- Damage caused by battery leakage, battery failure, or force majeure
