McGrath ASCOT Double-Sided Smart Gate Lock
The McGrath ASCOT is a double-sided digital smart gate lock designed for Australian external applications — residential and commercial gates, timber doors, and aluminium doors — where access control is required simultaneously from both sides. Because both handles carry the electronic lock, the ASCOT closes a critical security gap common on standard gate locks: no one can reach through, over, or between gate slats to operate the latch from the opposite side.
Four access methods are supported: keypad PIN, RFID credentials, Bluetooth eKey via the McGrath Locks App, and a mechanical key override. Both handles carry IP66-rated housings for full exposure to dust and high-pressure water, making the ASCOT equally at home on louvred and solid-panel gates in exposed outdoor settings.
Each handle is independently powered by 4 x AAA batteries, so if one side runs low, the other continues to operate. Remote management is available via an optional McGrath Wi-Fi gateway.
Same day if ordered before 11am AEST (excluding weekends and QLD public holidays)
The McGrath ASCOT is the only digital smart lock we are aware of in Australia that is designed specifically for pedestrian gates. Unlike standard door smart locks, the ASCOT's double-sided IP66-rated housings are built for full outdoor exposure — making it the only product we know of that is genuinely suitable for installation on pedestrian gates in the rain.
Available Finish Options
Matt Black
Satin Chrome
Finish selection does not affect functionality, compliance, or performance.

The Matt Black ASCOT has received a significant design upgrade by LSC, the distributors and owners of the McGrath Locks brand. The redesigned Matt Black variant is improved in every way — with substantially enhanced sun and water tolerance compared to the previous generation.
The Satin Chrome variant will be updated in due course, but until it receives a comparable upgrade we recommend choosing Matt Black for the most current and durable specification.

Battery, Power & Backup Access
- Each handle powered by 4 x AAA alkaline batteries (not included) — note AAA, not AA.

- Typical battery life approximately 12 months based on around 10 uses per day.

- User access credentials and lock programming are retained during battery replacement — no need to re-enrol users after changing batteries.
- Mechanical key override provides emergency access if electronic power is unavailable.
Wi-Fi Remote Access (Optional)
This smart lock does not include native Wi-Fi connectivity. Remote access and management features are available only when the lock is paired with a compatible McGrath Locks gateway. When a gateway is installed, users can remotely unlock the gate, issue or revoke access credentials, and view access activity through the McGrath Locks App from anywhere with an internet connection.
To choose the right McGrath gateway for this lock and your network, see Chapter 14 - choosing the right gateway.
The gateway connects to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. If your router merges its 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands under one name, this can interrupt the connection - see Chapter 08 - the Wi-Fi band-steering problem before installing. If a paired gateway repeatedly drops its connection, see our FAQ on smart locks dropping off Wi-Fi.
For short-stay and Airbnb operators who need automated code generation, the ASCOT supports property management system integration when paired with a gateway.
Not sure whether you need a gateway at all? See our guide to whether you actually need a gateway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the ASCOT require internet access to operate?
No. The lock operates locally via Bluetooth using the McGrath Locks App without any internet connection. Remote access and remote unlocking require an optional Wi-Fi gateway.
Is the ASCOT suitable for pool gates?
The ASCOT is an electronic smart gate lock and is not certified as a pool fence gate latch under Australian Standard AS 1926.1. If your pool gate must comply with AS 1926.1, confirm with your local council or pool fence certifier before ordering. Many buyers install the ASCOT alongside a compliant pool gate latch rather than as a replacement for one.
Is the ASCOT fire rated?
No. The ASCOT is not fire rated and is not suitable for installation on fire-rated doorsets. For fire door smart lock options, see Chapter 05 - Fire Door Smart Locks in the Buyer's Guide.
What gate thickness and backset does the ASCOT require?
The ASCOT fits gates and doors 35-55 mm thick with a 60 mm fixed backset. For guidance on measuring your gate or door, see our guide to measuring your lock backset.
Can both sides be unlocked from outside if needed?
Yes. Each handle carries a full electronic keypad, so all access methods — PIN, RFID, Bluetooth eKey, and mechanical key — work from either side of the gate independently.
Additional Information
The ASCOT suits a wide range of residential and commercial gate profiles — louvred, slat, vertical bar, solid panel, lattice, and timber. Confirm gate thickness (35-55 mm) and ensure the 60 mm backset is achievable from the gate edge before ordering. Installation should be carried out by a qualified locksmith or follow the supplied installation guide carefully. For common smart lock installation mistakes, see choosing the wrong hardware or backset.
Both handles carry an IP66 rating, providing resistance to dust ingress and high-pressure water jets. This makes the ASCOT suitable for fully exposed outdoor gate positions. For what salt air, UV and humidity mean for an outdoor lock in this climate, see Chapter 11 - Queensland-specific considerations.
The ASCOT uses AAA batteries (not AA) — 4 per handle, 8 in total. The two handles are independently powered, so a flat battery on one side does not disable the other. Access credentials are retained during battery replacement.
For reliable Wi-Fi remote access, the McGrath gateway should be positioned within range of the lock. For guidance on selecting the right gateway model and optimising placement, see Chapter 08 - Smart Lock Gateway Comparison.
The McGrath Locks app runs on the TT Lock platform. For an overview of how the platform manages users, passcodes and gateways, and how it compares to other app ecosystems, see Chapter 15 - Smart Lock App Platforms.
For an independent overview of the McGrath Locks range and its position in the Australian smart lock market, see Chapter 10 - Smart Lock Brand Profiles. For guidance on matching smart locks to different door and gate types, see the Chapter 04 compatibility matrix.
