The Carbine CEL2-BT Fire Rated Bluetooth Leverset (CEL2-BT-SL8SN-FRKIT) is the dedicated fire door installation kit for the CEL2-BT Bluetooth leverset. It provides four access methods - touchscreen PIN code, RFID/NFC credential, Bluetooth via the Carbine Connect App, and mechanical key override - and is packaged and documented for certified installation on E-Core fire-rated door assemblies (FRL -/120/30). It is the fire-door member of the Carbine CEL2 range and one of a small number of smart locks certified for fire doors that also add app control.

The lock stores up to 100 combined user codes and RFID credentials in one shared pool and supports up to 10 Bluetooth users per lock. The Carbine Connect App communicates over Bluetooth only - no internet, gateway, or hub is required for any access function, and there is no remote access from outside Bluetooth range. For context on when that matters, see Airbnb smart locks - do you need WiFi? and Buyer's Guide Ch08: what a gateway does.

If the fire door kit is not required, the standard Bluetooth leverset is the CEL2-BT-SL8SNKIT. A Matte Black fire rated variant (CEL2-BT-SL8MB-FRKIT) is also available. The full range is set out in the Carbine CEL & CDL Digital Lock Range Buyer's Guide.

Fire Rated - Dedicated Fire Door Installation Kit
E-Core: Jensen Hughes assessment FAS220275 DHAR1.8 lists the Carbine CEL2 BT electronic lockset at FRL -/120/30 on a 70mm backset, valid to 30/11/2027.
Condition: the rating applies in the direction of fire exposure tested, with the battery pack on the side exposed to fire.
The E-Core fire assessment report is available as a PDF download below. Confirm every other item in the fire door assembly - hinges, closer, seals, and strike - is also fire rated and compatible with the door system. See Fire door types and smart lock certification and Buyer's Guide Ch05: fire door core types.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between this and the standard CEL2-BT-SL8SNKIT?
The CEL2-BT-SL8SN-FRKIT is the dedicated fire door installation kit - the same lock, packaged and documented for certified fire door installation. If you are installing on a certified fire-rated door assembly, specify this kit. For non-fire door applications, the standard CEL2-BT-SL8SNKIT is the right choice. See Buyer's Guide Ch05: fire door smart locks.
Which fire door systems is this certified for?
The Carbine CEL2 BT electronic lockset is assessed for E-Core fire-rated door assemblies at FRL -/120/30 (Jensen Hughes report FAS220275 DHAR1.8, 70mm backset, valid to 30/11/2027), in the direction of fire exposure tested and with the battery pack on the side exposed to fire. The E-Core assessment is available as a PDF download below. The related Firecore and Pyropanel reports in the downloads assess the CEL2-3IN1-SL8SN and legacy CEL-3IN1 respectively, not the BT model, so this lock's certified rating is the E-Core figure. See understanding FRL ratings and fire rating certificates.
Can I control this lock remotely from anywhere?
No. The Carbine Connect App operates over Bluetooth only - you must be within approximately 10 metres of the lock. There is no cloud connection or internet gateway. This is a common consideration for fire door installations where remote access is not required. See Carbine Connect: no remote access explained and Buyer's Guide Ch08: what a gateway does.
Will my NFC phone work as an RFID credential?
Most NFC-enabled Android phones with Mifare support work. Visa PayWave and Mastercard PayPass are not compatible. If your phone is incompatible, use a Mifare RFID sticker adhered to the back of the phone. See Carbine CEL RFID Application List (PDF) and Buyer's Guide Ch03: RFID access.
My door is not within 35-51mm thick or 60-70mm backset - will this fit?
No. Outside these ranges the lock is not compatible, and the 127mm backset is not supported. See Buyer's Guide Ch02: measuring your door and how to measure your backset.

Additional Information

Fire Door Assembly - Complete Hardware Compliance:
The lock certification covers the lockset only. When specifying for a fire-rated door assembly, all other hardware must also be rated and compatible - hinges, door closer, intumescent seals, and strike. Confirm the complete hardware schedule with your fire door supplier or certifier before ordering, and verify that fire rating certificates are current (expiry dates are in the specs table above and the downloads below). See fire door types and smart lock certification, fire rating certificates and apartment fire doors on the Gold Coast.
Asbestos Awareness - Older Fire Doors:
Fire doors in older Gold Coast apartment buildings (pre-1990) may contain asbestos in the core or surrounding frame. Do not drill or cut without confirming the door material first. See Asbestos in Gold Coast apartment fire doors.
Protect the Pairing QR Code:
The QR code inside the battery compartment is the only way to pair a new device to the lock. Photograph it immediately after installation and store it safely. For commercial installations, Carbine recommends removing the QR code label from the lock after photographing it to prevent unauthorised re-pairing. See Carbine Connect: security.
Cable Routing - Critical Installation Step:
The connecting cable between the exterior and interior modules must be correctly seated in the mounting plate channel. Incorrect routing - the most common installation failure - causes an unresponsive keypad or a battery cover that will not seat. Check cable routing first if the keypad stops responding after installation. See 3 common DIY smart lock installation mistakes.
Professional Installation Available:
Terry's Locksmiths offers supply and installation on the Gold Coast, including fire door assessments. See site survey and installation services. For self-installation, see Buyer's Guide Ch12: installation & troubleshooting.

Carbine CEL2-BT Fire Rated Leverset - FAQ, Setup and Owner's Guide

Everything below is here to help you specify, install, set up and live with the Carbine CEL2-BT Fire Rated Bluetooth Leverset. For general smart-lock questions see our Smart Lock FAQ (Chapter 13), and for the whole Carbine digital range see the Carbine CEL & CDL Buyer's Guide.

Fire Rating and Certification

What fire rating does this lock actually hold?
The Carbine CEL2 BT electronic lockset is assessed for E-Core fire-rated doorsets at FRL -/120/30 (two-hour integrity, half-hour where insulation is assessed) on a 70mm backset, under Jensen Hughes report FAS220275 DHAR1.8, valid to 30 November 2027. The rating applies in the direction of fire exposure that was tested, and it is conditional on the battery pack being on the side of the door exposed to fire. What the FRL numbers mean is explained in our apartment fire door guide.
There are three fire reports in the downloads - which one covers this lock?
Only the E-Core report (FAS220275 DHAR1.8) names the Carbine CEL2 BT lockset, so that is the assessment for this Bluetooth model. The Firecore report (FRT230184) covers the standard CEL2-3IN1-SL8SN, and the Pyropanel report (FRT220272) covers the legacy CEL-3IN1 - both are supplied for reference across the wider CEL2 fire range, but neither names the BT lock. Always match the certificate to the exact model and door core on your job. See how to read a fire certificate.
Is the lock enough on its own to make my door compliant?
No. A fire door is a complete assembly. The lockset assessment covers the lock only - the hinges, door closer, intumescent seals and strike all have to be fire rated and compatible with the same door system, and the door leaf and frame must match the assessed doorset. Confirm the full hardware schedule with your fire door supplier or certifier before ordering. See the one-penetration principle for apartment fire doors and Buyer's Guide Ch05: fire door core types.
My building is older - anything to check before drilling?
Fire doors in older Gold Coast apartment buildings (roughly pre-1990) can contain asbestos in the core or the frame. Do not cut or drill until the door material is confirmed, because disturbing an asbestos core releases fibres. See asbestos in Gold Coast apartment fire doors. If you are not sure, a site survey is the safe first step.

Access, Credentials and Capacity

How many codes and cards can it hold?
The CEL2-BT leverset holds up to 100 credentials in one combined pool shared between PIN codes and RFID cards - so, for example, 60 PIN codes and 40 cards, or any split up to 100 in total. Separately, up to 10 Bluetooth app users can be added. Codes are 4-8 digits, and an entry code cannot be a subset of the admin code. (The Carbine CEL2 BT brochure states 100 combined for the Bluetooth leverset; where an older product guide quotes 200, the brochure figure is the one we follow.)
Which RFID cards and phones work with it?
It reads 13.56MHz Mifare (ISO14443 Type A) credentials - Carbine's own cards, FOBs, Ultra FOBs, wristbands and stickers, plus most NFC-enabled Android phones and many Australian Mifare transit cards (Go card, Opal, Myki, SmartRider, MyWay, metroCard). Visa PayWave and Mastercard PayPass are a different standard (Type B) and are not compatible. Browse the full RFID credentials range, and see the CEL RFID Application List (PDF).
My phone will not read as a credential - is there a fix?
Yes. Some phones do not expose a Mifare-compatible NFC profile, so they will not present as a card. The reliable workaround is a Mifare RFID sticker adhered to the back of the phone or case - the lock then reads the sticker, not the phone's own chip. See how RFID access works.
Is there a mechanical key, and why does that matter on a fire door?
Yes - a C4 keyway cylinder is included, keyed to a 5-pin key, so the lock always has a physical override. On a fire door this matters because loss of power or a lost phone must never leave the door unable to be operated. The key gets you in regardless of battery or Bluetooth state; the internal lever always allows egress. See key override in the access methods guide.

Carbine Connect App and Bluetooth

Can I unlock this from work, or from another suburb?
No. The Carbine Connect App is Bluetooth only - it works when your phone is within about 10 metres of the lock. There is no hub, gateway or cloud, so there is no remote unlock and no unlocking over the internet. If remote access from anywhere is a requirement, this is not the right platform - a WiFi/gateway lock is. See no remote access explained and what a gateway does.
How does auto-unlock on approach work?
Auto-unlock uses your phone's GPS and Bluetooth together with the Carbine Connect App. The app arms once you have left the area and then unlocks the door automatically as you return and come within Bluetooth range. For it to fire reliably, Location must be set to "Always" and the app kept running in the background. See Carbine Connect: auto-unlock.
Can I give a cleaner or contractor access for set hours only?
Yes. Bluetooth users can be issued one of three access types: permanent, a time period (a limited window), or scheduled (specific times of day). The event log records entry activity, so you can see who came and went. This is the usual way to run a fire-door entry in a strata or short-stay building without handing out a permanent code. See Carbine Connect user management.
Why is the QR code inside the battery compartment so important?
That QR code is the only way to pair a new phone to the lock. If it is lost, you cannot add another device. Photograph it the moment the lock is installed and store the photo somewhere safe. On commercial jobs, Carbine suggests removing the QR label from the lock after photographing it so nobody else can pair a device. See Carbine Connect: security.
Which app do I install, and is it on both iOS and Android?
The lock uses the Carbine Connect App, free on both iOS iOS App Store and Android Android Google Play. Download it, create an account, then scan the pairing QR code to add the lock. The app has been penetration-tested in Australia and rated "Low Risk". Compare it with other platforms in Buyer's Guide Ch15: app platforms.

Locking Modes and Everyday Use

Does it lock itself behind me?
It can. Auto-lock is off by default and can be set anywhere from 5 to 900 seconds - after that delay the lock relatches on its own. On a fire door in a busy building this is a useful way to make sure the door is never accidentally left unlocked. Turn it off if you would rather lock manually.
Can I hold the door open for a busy period?
Yes - passage mode holds the lock unlocked so the door opens freely without a credential, which suits reception areas or move-in days. Activate it by holding the [#] key for one second after unlocking, and switch it back when the period ends. On a fire door, only use passage mode while the space is supervised and never in a way that defeats the door's fire and egress function.
What are guiding codes and double authorisation?
A guiding code lets you enter random digits before or after your real PIN so an onlooker cannot read your code over your shoulder - handy on a shared entry. Double authorisation requires both an RFID card and a PIN together before the door opens, for higher-security doors. Both are set in the programming menu; the steps are in the leverset programming guide in the downloads.
What is vacation mode for?
Vacation mode temporarily disables all user codes so the lock can only be opened by the key or an authorised app user - useful when a property is left empty for a while. Re-enable normal operation when you are back. It is set from the same programming menu as the other modes.

Fit, Installation and Power

Will it fit my door?
It fits a standard 54mm lockset bore, suits door leaves 35-51mm thick, and has an adjustable 60-70mm backset - the 127mm backset is not supported. Measure your door before ordering: our guide to measuring backset and door thickness and how to measure your backset walk through it.
The keypad is dead after installation - what did I miss?
By far the most common cause is the connecting cable between the exterior and interior modules not being seated in the mounting plate channel - a pinched or unseated cable gives an unresponsive keypad or a battery cover that will not close. Re-check the cable routing first. See 3 common DIY installation mistakes, or book professional installation.
What batteries does it take and how long do they last?
Four AA 1.5V alkaline batteries (Duracell Procell recommended) - do not use lithium or rechargeable cells. Expect around 5,000 openings per set, with a low-battery LED and audible warning well before they are flat. Because there is a mechanical key, a flat battery never locks you out. See how long do digital door locks last?
Can it go on an exposed or outdoor door?
The lock is rated IP54, which suits a covered external entry but not a position exposed to driving rain or a fully weather-facing gate. For a fire door in an exterior stairwell or lobby, allow for additional weather protection. IP ratings are explained in the installation and troubleshooting chapter.

Choosing Within the Range

Do I need the FR Kit, or will the standard CEL2-BT leverset do?
If the door is a certified fire door, specify this FR Kit - it is packaged and documented for that installation. If the door is not a fire door, the standard CEL2-BT-SL8SNKIT is the same lock without the fire kit packaging and is the right choice. Both are set out in the Carbine CEL & CDL Buyer's Guide.
How is this different from the standalone CEL2-3IN1 fire leverset?
The CEL2-3IN1-SL8SN-FRKIT is a standalone fire leverset with PIN, RFID and key but no Bluetooth. This CEL2-BT-SL8SN-FRKIT adds the Carbine Connect App on top of the same PIN, RFID and key. If you want app-managed users and an event log on the fire door, choose this BT kit; if you never need the app, the 3IN1 fire kit does the rest.
Is it available in another finish?
Yes - the same lock is available in Matte Black (CEL2-BT-SL8MB-FRKIT). Finish does not change functionality, compliance or the fire rating.
