The Carbine CEL2-BT Digital Bluetooth Deadbolt (CEL2-BT-DBMBKIT) is the Bluetooth-enabled deadbolt in the Carbine CEL2-BT range. It provides touchscreen PIN code entry, Bluetooth access through the Carbine Connect App, and mechanical key override. It stores up to 200 user PIN codes and supports up to 10 Bluetooth users per lock — all managed through the app or directly on the keypad.

Important — RFID is not available on this model. Unlike the CEL2-3IN1 deadbolt, the Bluetooth deadbolt does not read RFID cards, FOBs, wristbands, stickers, or NFC phones. If RFID access is required, select the CEL2-3IN1-DBMBKIT (PIN + RFID + Key, same Matte Black finish) instead. For Bluetooth and RFID together, the CEL2-BT leverset models support all three access types.

The Carbine Connect App needs no internet connection or gateway — it communicates directly with the lock over Bluetooth. Remote access (unlocking from outside Bluetooth range) is not possible. For short-stay rental automations that need remote access, see: Airbnb smart locks — do you need WiFi?

A Satin Nickel variant (CEL2-BT-DBSNKIT) is also available.

RFID
RFID Not Compatible with Bluetooth Deadbolt Models
This lock does not read RFID cards, key FOBs, wristbands, stickers, or NFC-enabled smartphones — the Bluetooth deadbolt is a PIN, Bluetooth and key product only. If RFID access is required, select the CEL2-3IN1-DBMBKIT (PIN + RFID + Key, Matte Black). For RFID + Bluetooth + PIN, choose one of the CEL2-BT leverset models. See: Buyers Guide Ch03: RFID access methods

Bluetooth
Carbine Connect App — Bluetooth Access
The Carbine Connect App (iOS iOS App Store and Android Android Google Play) pairs to the lock by scanning the QR code inside the battery compartment. Once paired, the app owner can add up to 10 Bluetooth users by sharing access via QR code, SMS, or email. Users can be given permanent, time-limited, or scheduled access. The event log shows all entry activity. Auto-unlock opens the lock automatically as you approach, using GPS and Bluetooth (requires Location set to “Always”; disabled by default — test before relying on it). Bluetooth range only — no internet, gateway, or remote access. Photograph the QR code immediately after installation and store it safely. See: No remote access explained · Buyers Guide Ch08: Gateway Comparison · Buyers Guide Ch15: App Platforms

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I unlock this lock remotely from anywhere?
No. The Carbine Connect App communicates over Bluetooth only. You must be within roughly 10 metres of the lock to control it from the app. There is no cloud connection, gateway, or internet integration. For remote access (for example, letting a tradesperson in while you are away), share a PIN code in advance, or choose a lock that supports remote access via a gateway. See: Carbine Connect: No remote access explained · Buyers Guide Ch08: Gateway Comparison
Why doesn’t this deadbolt support RFID when the leverset BT models do?
This is a hardware design difference between the deadbolt and leverset variants of the CEL2-BT range. The BT leverset models support PIN, RFID, Bluetooth, and key. The BT deadbolt models support PIN, Bluetooth, and key only. If RFID on a deadbolt is required, use the CEL2-3IN1-DBMBKIT (PIN + RFID + Key, no Bluetooth). See: Buyers Guide Ch03: RFID access methods
How do I add Bluetooth users to this lock?
Pair the lock to the Carbine Connect App by scanning the QR code inside the battery compartment. Once the Owner account is set up, additional users can be invited by sharing a QR code, SMS, or email through the app. Users can be assigned permanent, time-limited, or scheduled access. Up to 10 Bluetooth users can be active per lock. You must be within Bluetooth range to add or modify users. See: Carbine Connect: User management
Is this lock fire rated?
No. The CEL2-BT deadbolt does not carry fire door certification and is not suitable for fire-rated door assemblies. For fire door applications, use the CEL2-3IN1 or CEL2-BT fire-rated leverset models. See: Buyers Guide Ch05: Fire Door Smart Locks
My door has a 38mm bore hole — will this lock fit?
Yes. An adapter collar is included for 38mm bore hole installation. Remove the screw post and adapter collar from the assembly before fitting, as shown in the installation instructions. See: Buyers Guide Ch02: Measuring Your Door

Additional Information

Protect the pairing QR code:
The QR code in the battery compartment is the only way to pair a new device to the lock. If it is removed or damaged, pairing is no longer possible via the app. Take a photo of the QR code immediately after installation and keep it somewhere safe. For commercial or short-stay rental applications, Carbine recommends removing the QR code label from the lock after photographing it, to prevent unauthorised re-pairing. See: Carbine Connect: setup and critical gotchas
Handing — auto-detection on factory reset:
The CEL2-BT deadbolt automatically detects its handing (the direction the bolt throws) after a factory reset, but the lock must be fully installed on the door for this to work correctly. Do not test handing off the door. If the bolt behaviour is reversed after installation, perform a factory reset with the lock on the door and allow the self-calibration cycle (about 30 seconds) to complete. See: Understanding door handing in Australia
Cable routing — a critical installation step:
The cable connecting the exterior and interior modules must be seated correctly in the designated channel of the mounting plate. Incorrect routing results in a pinched cable that can cause an unresponsive keypad, a battery cover that won’t close, or the Set button being held down permanently. If the keypad stops responding after the battery cover is installed, suspect the cable first. See: 3 common DIY smart lock installation mistakes
Auto-unlock feature:
Auto-unlock uses GPS and Bluetooth to open the lock automatically as you approach. It requires Location permission set to “Always” (iOS) or “All the time” (Android) and the app running in the background. GPS accuracy and phone settings affect reliability. The lock uses a 200-metre departure threshold and a 10-metre Bluetooth activation range. Test thoroughly before relying on it. Auto-unlock is disabled by default. See: Carbine Connect: Auto-unlock
Professional installation available:
Terry’s Locksmiths offers supply and installation on the Gold Coast. See: Site survey and installation services. For self-installation guidance: Buyers Guide Ch12: Installation & Troubleshooting

Carbine CEL2-BT Deadbolt — FAQ, Setup and Owner’s Guide

Everything a buyer, installer or owner tends to ask about the Matte Black Bluetooth deadbolt (CEL2-BT-DBMBKIT). For the wider picture, see the Smart Lock FAQ chapter and the Carbine CEL & CDL Buyer’s Guide.

Access & Credentials

How do you unlock this deadbolt?
Three ways: a 4–8 digit PIN code on the touchscreen, the Carbine Connect App over Bluetooth, or the mechanical key. It holds up to 200 user PIN codes and up to 10 Bluetooth users. There is no RFID, fingerprint, face or Wi-Fi on this model. Compare the credentials in Buyers Guide Ch03: Access Methods.
Can I add RFID cards or fobs later?
No. The Bluetooth deadbolt has no RFID reader, so cards, fobs, wristbands, stickers and NFC phones will not work on it — and that cannot be added afterwards. If you want RFID on a deadbolt, the CEL2-3IN1-DBMBKIT reads RFID (but has no Bluetooth); to have RFID and Bluetooth together you need a leverset such as the CEL2-BT-SL8MBKIT. The compatible Carbine credentials — card, fob, sticker, wristband and ultra fob — all work on the RFID-capable models, not on this one.
How many PIN codes can it hold, and what length?
Up to 200 user codes, each 4 to 8 digits. It also supports single-use codes (4-digit, in limited sets), a guiding code (type random digits before or after the real code to hide it from onlookers), and double authorisation (two codes required to open). The default programming code is 12345678 — change it before use.
What key does it use, and can it be rekeyed?
A C4 keyway cylinder (6-pin PD style, supplied keyed to a 5-pin key) with two keys in the box. The mechanical key is a full backup that always works, regardless of battery or Bluetooth state. A locksmith can rekey the cylinder to an existing C4 key system.

Carbine Connect App & Remote Access

Can I let someone in while I’m away from home?
Not through the app in real time — Carbine Connect is Bluetooth only, so you must be within about 10 metres to operate the lock from your phone. To give access remotely, set up a PIN code (permanent, time-limited or scheduled) in advance while you are at the lock; the visitor then uses that code. If you need to grant or revoke access from anywhere, choose a gateway-connected lock instead. See: the no-remote-access reality · Buyers Guide Ch08: gateways.
How does auto-unlock work, and is it reliable?
Auto-unlock uses your phone’s GPS and Bluetooth to open the lock as you walk up to the door. It is optional and off by default. It needs Location set to “Always” and the app running in the background; the lock uses a 200-metre departure threshold and a roughly 10-metre Bluetooth activation range. Reliability depends on GPS accuracy and phone power settings, so test it thoroughly before you depend on it. See: Carbine Connect: auto-unlock.
Does it keep a record of who came and went?
Yes. The event log records access activity and is viewable in the app when you are connected to the lock over Bluetooth. Because there is no gateway, the log is not pushed to you remotely — you read it next time you are within range. See: event log and notifications.
Is the app secure?
The Carbine Connect App was independently penetration-tested and rated “Low Risk”. Because it is Bluetooth-only with no cloud account, there is no internet-facing service to attack when you are away from the lock. See: the SilentGrid security audit.

Door Fit & Installation

Will it fit my door?
It suits doors 35–51mm thick with an adjustable 60–70mm backset (a 127mm backset is not supported). It fits a standard 54mm bore, and a 38mm bore using the included adapter collar. Measure before you order — see Buyers Guide Ch02: backset and door thickness.
The bolt throws the wrong way after fitting — how do I fix the handing?
The deadbolt sets its own handing during a factory reset, but only when it is installed on the door. Do not test it off the door. If the bolt behaves backwards after fitting, factory reset the lock while it is on the door and let the self-calibration cycle (about 30 seconds) finish. See: understanding door handing.
The keypad went dead after I put the battery cover on. What happened?
Almost always a pinched connecting cable. The cable between the outside and inside modules has to sit in its channel on the mounting plate; if it is crushed when the cover goes on, the keypad can stop responding, the cover may not close, or the Set button can be held down. Re-route the cable first. See: 3 common DIY installation mistakes and Buyers Guide Ch12: troubleshooting.
I’m replacing an older CEL-3IN1 — will the old screw holes show?
The CEL2 and CEL-3IN1 screw positions do not line up, so an upgrade can leave visible holes. The CEL2 deadbolt retrofit plate (CEL2-DB-RP-SS brushed stainless or CEL2-DB-RP-MB Matte Black, 75 x 147mm) covers the external-side holes. Browse scar and adaptor plates.

Power, Weather & Compliance

What batteries does it take and how long do they last?
Four AA 1.5V alkaline batteries (Duracell Procell recommended, included in the KIT), giving roughly 5,000 openings. Do not use lithium or rechargeable batteries — damage from incompatible batteries is not covered by warranty. A low-battery warning (LED and tone) sounds before the batteries are exhausted, and the mechanical key is always there as backup. See: how long do digital door locks last?
Can it go on an exposed outside door?
The exterior module is rated IP54, which covers everyday weather on a typical front door. The IP rating applies to the outside module only; the internal module houses the battery compartment and electronics and is for interior use. For a door fully exposed to driving rain, add weather protection or an awning. See: Buyers Guide Ch11: IP ratings.
How does it hold up near the coast?
Carbine salt spray tests the CEL range to 240 hours. That is a laboratory cabinet test — the lock is sealed in a continuous salt fog and the hours are how long the finish went before corrosion appeared — not a warranty for coastal service. In a salt-air location, rinse the lock periodically and keep it out of constant spray. See: Buyers Guide Ch11: AS4145 corrosion.
Can it go on a fire door?
No. This deadbolt is not fire rated and must not be fitted to a fire-rated door assembly. On an apartment fire door, a deadbolt is generally not the compliant secondary option in any case — a fire-rated deadlatch is. For a fire-rated Carbine, step up to a CEL2-3IN1 or CEL2-BT fire-rated leverset. See: Buyers Guide Ch05: fire door core types · the compliant secondary option.
Is it suitable for a busy commercial door?
It is ANSI Grade 2, tested to 150,000 mechanical and 75,000 electronic cycles — fine for residential and light-commercial use. The CEL2-BT leverset models carry higher cycle figures (500,000 mechanical / 250,000 electronic) if the door sees heavy traffic. Compare the range in the Carbine range-at-a-glance table.

Choosing the Right Model

Deadbolt or leverset — which do I need?
A deadbolt is a secondary bolt with no handle; it suits a door that already has a working latch and you want a second, app-managed lock. If the door needs its handle and latch replaced too, choose a CEL2 leverset instead. See: secondary locks explained.
How is this different from the CEL2-3IN1 deadbolt and the CDL2 deadbolt?
This CEL2-BT deadbolt adds the Carbine Connect app (Bluetooth, 200 PIN codes) but drops RFID. The CEL2-3IN1-DBMBKIT keeps RFID and PIN (100 combined) but has no app. The entry-level CDL2-DB is PIN and key only (10 codes, membrane keypad, no touchscreen, no app). Pick by whether you value app control (this model), RFID cards (CEL2-3IN1), or lowest cost (CDL2).
Is it available in another finish?
Yes — this is the Matte Black kit; the same lock is also sold in Satin Nickel (CEL2-BT-DBSNKIT). Finish does not change function, compliance or performance.
