dormakaba M5 BLE Digital Smart Lock – PIN, RFID and Bluetooth Access – Fire Rated
The dormakaba M5 BLE is a Bluetooth-enabled digital mortice lock that provides four access methods — PIN code, RFID card or fob, Bluetooth via the dormakaba SmartLock app, and mechanical key override. The lock is supplied as a complete kit including the dormakaba MS2602 Series Australian-style mortice lock, which exceeds the requirements of AS4145.2 (Australian standard for locksets and door hardware).
Bluetooth access operates on a proximity basis only: the dormakaba SmartLock app (iOS and Android) connects directly to the lock when within Bluetooth range and allows app-based unlocking, audit log retrieval, credential management, and time-sensitive PIN code generation and sharing for visitors. There is no WiFi gateway available for this lock, and the app does not provide remote access from outside Bluetooth range. The lock operates as a fully standalone unit using its onboard credentials when the app is not in use.
The M5 BLE has been tested on fire door assemblies to AS1905.1 (Fire Resistant Doorsets). Two finish combinations are available: Black with Brushed Nickel rim, and Black with Matt Black rim. Both use the same lock body, mortice lock, and electronic module. Available in door thicknesses from 35mm to 50mm with a fixed 60mm backset.
The dormakaba M5 BLE has been tested on fire door assemblies in accordance with AS1905.1 (Fire Resistant Doorsets). Testing was conducted up to 2 hours depending on the door type. Compatibility for use with specific fire door core types (E-Core, Firecore, Pyropanel) must be confirmed with dormakaba Australia before installation. See Chapter 05 – Fire Door Smart Locks for guidance.

Bluetooth App Access – No Gateway Required or Available
The M5 BLE uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to connect directly between the lock and the dormakaba SmartLock app. This connection works within Bluetooth range only — typically a few metres. There is no WiFi gateway available for this lock, and the app does not provide remote unlock from outside Bluetooth range.
While standing at the door, the app allows you to unlock the lock, retrieve the access log, manage credentials, and generate time-limited PIN codes that can be sent to visitors via text or email. The visitor then uses the PIN code on the keypad; the actual unlock does not require Bluetooth.
Without the app, the lock operates fully as a standalone unit using its onboard access methods: PIN code, RFID card/fob, and mechanical key. If remote access from anywhere in the world is a requirement, consider a lock with WiFi gateway capability. See Chapter 08 – Smart Lock Gateway Comparison for a full breakdown of gateway-enabled locks in the range.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the M5 BLE need a WiFi gateway to function?
No. The M5 BLE is a fully standalone lock. It does not require a gateway for any of its onboard access methods (PIN, RFID, or mechanical key). The Bluetooth connection to the dormakaba SmartLock app is direct phone-to-lock and also requires no gateway. However, because the connection is Bluetooth proximity only, there is no remote unlock from outside the immediate area of the door. There is no gateway available for this lock — if remote access from anywhere is needed, it is not the right product. See Chapter 08 of the Buyer's Guide for gateway-capable alternatives.
What does Privacy Mode do, and is it the same as Passage Mode?
They are opposites. Passage mode (activated by moving the physical switch on the internal escutcheon to the OPEN position) allows the door to be opened from either side without any credential — useful for periods of free access. Privacy mode, when enabled and triggered, blocks all digital credentials from outside: PIN codes, RFID cards/fobs, and the Bluetooth app cannot unlock the door. Only the mechanical key override allows outside entry while Privacy mode is active. Privacy mode must first be enabled in the lock's programming menu; it is then triggered by pressing the mode switch button for 5 seconds. To deactivate it, press the switch for 3 seconds or push the internal lever down. Be aware that activating Privacy mode will lock out all electronic access from outside — see our guide to the perils of the internal snib for more detail on how this can cause lockouts.
Can I share access with guests or visitors without being on site?
Yes, with a limitation. Using the dormakaba SmartLock app, the administrator can generate a time-limited PIN code and share it via text message or email. The visitor uses the PIN on the keypad to unlock the door — no Bluetooth or app required on their end. However, to generate and share the code, the administrator needs to use the app (which can be done from anywhere on a smartphone). This is code sharing, not remote unlock: you are sending a PIN for the visitor to type, not unlocking the door from a distance.
Is the M5 BLE suitable for installation on fire-rated doors?
The M5 BLE has been tested on fire door assemblies in accordance with AS1905.1 (Fire Resistant Doorsets), with testing conducted up to 2 hours depending on the door type. However, the manufacturer's brochure notes that compatibility for use with varying fire door core types must be checked with dormakaba Australia before installation. The specific AU fire door core types covered (E-Core, Firecore, Pyropanel) are not individually documented in the Australian product materials — confirm directly with dormakaba Australia before specifying for a fire door application. See Chapter 05 – Fire Door Smart Locks and our fire door compliance guide for further guidance.
What happens if the batteries run out completely?
If the batteries are fully depleted, two emergency power options are available before the mechanical key is needed. The USB-C port on the front escutcheon accepts a portable USB power bank connected via a USB-C cable — hold it in contact while entering a PIN code to unlock. Alternatively, the 9V external terminals on the front escutcheon allow a standard 9V battery to be held against the contacts to provide temporary power. If neither option is available, the mechanical key override still works regardless of battery status. The low battery indicator and audible alert will warn you well before full depletion.
Additional Information
The M5 BLE is tested to AS1905.1 (Fire Resistant Doorsets). Testing was conducted up to 2 hours depending on the door type. The dormakaba brochure includes a note that compatibility with varying fire door core types should be confirmed with dormakaba Australia — the specific AU core type approvals (E-Core, Firecore, Pyropanel) are not individually listed in the Australian product materials. Before specifying the M5 BLE on a fire door, confirm current certification scope with dormakaba Australia and ensure all other hardware in the assembly is also fire rated and compatible. See Fire Door Types & Smart Lock Certification and Chapter 05 – Fire Door Smart Locks for background on the AU certification framework.
The dormakaba SmartLock app (iOS 8.0+ and Android 5.0+) connects to the M5 BLE via Bluetooth Low Energy. App functions include: proximity unlock, access log retrieval, credential management (add/delete users), time-limited PIN code generation and sharing, and time sync. All app functions require proximity — the phone must be within Bluetooth range of the lock. The app supports up to 10 BLE registered users. App verification methods include password, pattern lock, and fingerprint (if the smartphone has a fingerprint sensor). See Chapter 03 – Access Methods for more detail on how Bluetooth access compares to WiFi-connected locks.
The M5 BLE sounds an audible alarm for 30 seconds each time the mechanical key override is used to unlock the lock. This is a design feature, not a fault — it is intended to draw attention to key override use in case of unauthorised entry. This alarm cannot be disabled. If the lock is in a location where regular key use is expected, consider whether this alarm is acceptable to occupants.
The M5 Series brochure (the product-specific spec document) states a PIN code capacity of 10 codes total (7 general users). The M Series user guide (which covers the broader range) shows a larger capacity with different ID allocations. The brochure figure is presented in this description as the M5-specific specification. If PIN code capacity is critical for your application, confirm current firmware capacity directly with dormakaba Australia before ordering.
The factory default administrator PIN code is 00123456. On first setup (or after a factory reset), the lock will prompt you to change this code before normal operation begins. Do not place the lock into service without changing the default PIN. Record the new administrator PIN code securely — it is required for any programming changes and for performing a factory reset.
The M5 BLE is designed as a standalone unit requiring no additional wiring. Voice-guided programming in English walks through initial setup. If you are unsure about the installation, or if the lock is being fitted to a fire door, strata apartment entry, or commercial premise, Terry's offers a site survey and professional installation service for this product. See our Site Survey & Installation Services page for more information.
