The FORGE DBT1 Fingerprint Smart Deadbolt (FELKDB1BA) is a keyless deadbolt for timber or aluminium doors 35-110 mm thick. From outside it opens with a fingerprint, a PIN code on the touch keypad, an RFID card or the TTLock app over Bluetooth, with a mechanical key as the backup. Inside there is a manual turn knob and a one-touch lock and unlock button. It is a deadbolt only - no handle and no latch - so it is normally fitted above the door's existing handle set.

It runs on TTLock, the app platform behind many of the smart locks we stock. On its own the DBT1 talks to your phone over Bluetooth within about 5-10 metres; add the FORGE TTLock G5 gateway (sold separately) and you can unlock it, issue passcodes and check entry records from anywhere. Codes can be permanent, one-time, time-limited or recurring, which suits short-stay rentals and staff entry as well as family homes.

The outside panel is rated IP66 - the inside panel is not - and the lock runs on 4 x AA batteries for roughly 6 to 12 months, with a USB-C emergency power port beside the keyhole if they go flat. It is made in China for FORGE, an Australian brand based in Ringwood, Victoria, and carries FORGE's 2-year warranty. If you want a video doorbell and face recognition on the same body, see the FORGE DBV1.

TTLock App

TTLock logo

Set the lock up in the free TTLock app, available for iOS and Android iOS App StoreAndroid Google Play. Choose Australia as your location when you sign up, give the app full permissions and turn Bluetooth on. Until the first administrator is added the lock is in its factory state - the default admin code is 123456 and any fingerprint will open it - so pair it as soon as it is fitted. FORGE's TTLock pairing guide walks through the steps; keep your phone within 2 metres of the lock while pairing. The introduction pages of the manual cover the same ground for this model.

TTLock is one of the two global smart lock platforms - how it compares with Tuya is set out in our TTLock vs Tuya comparison, and the wider TTLock range in Chapter 14 - the TTLock hardware ecosystem. The app itself is covered in the TTLock app user manual.

TTLock
Bluetooth by default, remote with a gateway
Without a gateway the DBT1 is managed over Bluetooth when your phone is near the door - see what a TTLock lock can do without Wi-Fi. With the FORGE TTLock G5 gateway plugged in nearby, you can unlock on demand from anywhere, change codes, check records and set a passage-mode schedule remotely - Bluetooth vs gateway in Chapter 14. Remote Unlock has to be switched on in the app and Power Saving Mode turned off.

Key Features

  • Electronic deadbolt with a one-touch lock and unlock button and a manual turn knob on the inside - no handle or latch, so it pairs with the door's existing handle set.
  • Four ways in from outside: fingerprint (up to 200), PIN code (up to 150), RFID card (up to 200) and the TTLock app - compare them in Chapter 03.
  • Bluetooth unlock from the TTLock app within about 5-10 metres; add the G5 gateway for Wi-Fi remote access from anywhere (the G5 gateway explained).
  • Mechanical key override in the outside panel, and a 5 V 1 A USB-C emergency power port beside the keyhole - what happens when the battery dies.
  • Touch-sensitive keypad that lights up with a light swipe or touch; # confirms and * clears.
  • Forced Fingerprint - a duress fingerprint that opens the door and sends the administrator an alarm notification. It is for emergencies, not daily use.
  • Passcodes, fingerprints and cards can be permanent, time-limited or recurring; passcodes can also be one-time. A new code must be used once within 24 hours of its start time or the lock suspends it.
  • eKeys for other TTLock users, with options to allow remote unlock, unlock by link without the app, or near-administrator rights - TTLock eKeys explained.
  • Passage Mode with a schedule set in the app - the door stays unlocked for the set period once it has been unlocked by hand, and locks again automatically when the period ends (what passage mode does).
  • Entry records in the TTLock app, so you can see who came and went - useful for rental and staff audit trails.
  • After five wrong attempts in a row the lock ignores all input for 90 seconds, and it goes back to sleep after 20 seconds without use.
  • IP66 rated outside panel; the inside panel is for interior use only.
  • Runs on 4 x AA alkaline batteries for roughly 6 to 12 months, with a voice low-battery warning.
  • Suits timber and aluminium doors 35-110 mm thick on front doors with one side facing the weather; one of our app-enabled smart locks.

Other gateways and bridges are in the modules and Wi-Fi gateways category, and more cards and fobs in the RFID credentials range.

Battery and Emergency Power

Power, warnings and backup
The DBT1 runs on 4 x AA alkaline batteries that FORGE rates at 6 to 12 months, depending on use. When they run low the lock says "low battery" as you unlock, with roughly 50 to 100 unlocks left - replace all four then. (The manual says to charge the battery; the DBT1 uses ordinary AA cells, so replace them.) If the battery goes flat, open the door with the mechanical key or power the lock through the USB-C port next to the keyhole. Use a USB-A to USB-C cable from a power bank - a USB-C to USB-C cable can make the power bank treat the lock as a fast-charge device and not supply power (manual page 20). More on what really affects battery life and power and battery FAQs.

Weather Rating - IP66 Outside Panel

IP66 weather ratingIP66 weather rating
IP66 outside panel - inside panel for interior use
The outside panel is rated IP66 for everyday outdoor exposure - rain, sun and dust. The inside panel, which holds the battery and electronics, is for interior use only and is not weather rated. FORGE's rating does not cover extreme exposure such as driving rain, hail, constant salt spray, flooding or immersion; on a door that takes the weather head-on, fit a rain hood or cover over the lock (non-warranty disclaimer). On the coast, read coastal environments and Queensland considerations.
IP66 rating explained: powerful water blast

FORGE's manual gives no backset figure - its cut-out template is a guide to adjust to your door, so check your backset before ordering.

Platform, Data and Compliance

Platform. The DBT1 runs on TTLock - Bluetooth to your phone, with the TTLock G5 gateway for remote access.

Where your data goes. TTLock is run by Sciener, a Chinese company. Accounts outside China use TTLock's out-of-China servers; where that infrastructure is hosted, and which region Australian accounts use, is not published - in short, a Chinese company's servers, location unpublished. For the platform-by-platform picture see where each smart lock platform hosts its data, and for TTLock's security record see Chapter 14 - TTLock security.

Installation

The DBT1 fits a deadbolt mortice into the door edge and clamps the two panels together through the door with a threaded sleeve and three connection screws. FORGE's cut-out template is a guide only, so adjust the backset to suit your door - the installation section of the manual runs through each step with drawings.

Installation Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a gateway?
Not for everyday use. The DBT1 works over Bluetooth with your phone within about 5-10 metres, and fingerprint, PIN and card entry work with no phone at all. Add the FORGE TTLock G5 gateway if you want to unlock, change codes or check records from away from home. More in do you need a gateway? and what a gateway actually does.
Will it fit my door?
It suits timber and aluminium doors 35-110 mm thick and needs a deadbolt mortice in the door edge. FORGE's cut-out template is a guide and the manual gives no fixed backset, so measure your door and check the backset first. If you are unsure, book a site survey.
What happens if the batteries go flat?
You get a voice warning first, with roughly 50 to 100 unlocks left. If they do go flat, use the mechanical key or connect a power bank to the USB-C port beside the keyhole with a USB-A to USB-C cable, then fit four new AA batteries.
Is it a good lock for an Airbnb or rental?
It works well for short stays: each guest gets a time-limited or recurring code that stops working on its own, and codes are generated in the TTLock app. A new code has to be used once within 24 hours of its start time or the lock suspends it. With a G5 gateway you can issue and cancel codes remotely. See TTLock passcode types and what changes with a gateway.
Is it weatherproof?
The outside panel is IP66 rated for rain, sun and dust; the inside panel is for interior use only. FORGE recommends a rain hood where the lock takes driving rain, and its warranty excludes water damage beyond IP66. See IP ratings explained.

Additional Information

  • Register an administrator straight away. Until the first administrator is added in the app, the default admin code is 123456 and any fingerprint will open the door. A factory reset puts the lock back into that state.
  • Cut the spindle to the door. A spindle left too long is the usual reason a newly fitted DBT1 will not unlock smoothly.
  • Set the door opening direction in the app. FORGE makes this step mandatory; if lock and unlock work back to front, the setting is wrong.
  • Keep the mechanical keys outside the house - in the car or with a trusted neighbour - so they are there if the battery fails (key storage ideas).
  • Passage Mode needs one manual unlock. During a scheduled passage period, unlock the door once by hand and it stays unlocked until the period ends, then locks itself.

FORGE DBT1 Smart Deadbolt - FAQ, Setup and Owner's Guide

Everything below is here to help you choose, fit, set up and live with the FORGE DBT1. For general smart lock questions see our Smart Lock FAQ (Chapter 13), and for measuring and fitting the Buyer's Guide.

Choosing Between the DBT1 and DBV1

What is the difference between the DBT1 and the DBV1?
They share the same body, deadbolt mortice, door range (35-110 mm), IP66 outside panel and credential set (200 fingerprints, 150 passcodes, 200 cards). The DBV1 adds a 2 MP video doorbell camera, 3D face recognition for 50 people and a 5,000 mAh rechargeable battery. Both are TTLock Bluetooth locks that take the optional G5 gateway for remote access; the DBT1 runs on 4 x AA batteries.
Which one should I choose?
If you want to see callers and walk in hands-free, the DBV1 is the one. If you mainly want fingerprint, code and card entry at the door and do not need a camera, the DBT1 costs less, and its AA batteries are easy to swap. The DBV1 also needs mounting at least 1.1 m above the ground.

Credentials and Access

How do I get a fingerprint to register reliably?
Press the finger firmly on the sensor several times when prompted, moving it slightly each time so the lock captures different areas. Avoid wet fingers. Older people can have flatter fingerprints - register the same finger more than once to improve the success rate. Children's fingerprints change as they grow, so update them every few months or give them a passcode instead.
What is a Forced Fingerprint?
A duress fingerprint. You register it like any other, but when it is used to open the door the administrator receives an alarm notification. It is meant for an emergency where someone is forcing you to open the door, not for daily use.
What kinds of passcodes can I create?
Four: time-limited (unlimited use within a validity period), one-time (used once, and it must be used within 6 hours of being created), permanent, and recurring (on set days of the week). Time-limited, permanent and recurring codes must be used at least once within 24 hours of their start time or the lock suspends them for security. Codes are generated by the system and can be customised afterwards to 4-9 digits (manual page 14; Chapter 14 - passcode types).
Which RFID cards does it use, and can I add more?
M1 (MIFARE 1K) cards, up to 200. Cards can be permanent, time-limited or recurring. Extra FORGE MIFARE 1K cards are sold separately; touch each new card on the card reader when the app prompts you.
What is an eKey?
An eKey gives another TTLock app account the right to unlock the lock - time-limited, one-time, permanent or recurring. When you send one you can allow remote unlock, create an unlock link that works without the app, or authorise the user with almost the same rights as the administrator (TTLock eKeys).
How close do I need to be to unlock from the app?
Bluetooth unlock relies on a direct link between your phone and the lock; the effective range is typically 5-10 metres.

Remote Access and the G5 Gateway

What does the G5 gateway add?
The FORGE TTLock G5 gateway links the lock's Bluetooth to your home Wi-Fi. Per FORGE's published comparison, TTLock with a gateway gives on-demand remote unlock, scheduled passage mode, Alexa and Google voice control (FORGE does not recommend voice unlock) and integration with property management software. You can also issue and cancel codes and eKeys and check records remotely.
Where should the gateway go?
Within reliable Bluetooth range of the lock, on a power point with good Wi-Fi coverage - brick and metal between them shorten the range. See gateway placement. The G5 is dual-band, so it works with 2.4 or 5 GHz routers (the G5 in Chapter 08).
Remote unlock is not working - what should I check?
Make sure the Remote Unlock function is switched on (and authorised for that user), that Power Saving Mode is off, and that the gateway is online (manual page 18). If the gateway keeps dropping out, see why smart locks drop off Wi-Fi.
What still works if the internet goes down?
Everything at the door - fingerprint, code, card, Bluetooth app unlock and the key. Only the remote functions pause until the connection returns (gateways and internet outages).

Setup and Pairing

Which app do I use and how do I start?
The free TTLock app on iOS or Android iOS App StoreAndroid Google Play. Sign up, choose Australia as your location, give the app full permissions and turn on Bluetooth. Touch the keypad to wake the lock - it will say "Please add a Bluetooth administrator" - then add it in the app under Add devices. FORGE's TTLock pairing guide shows the screens; keep your phone within 2 metres while pairing.
What is the default code, and why does it matter?
Out of the box the default admin code is 123456, and until an administrator is registered any fingerprint will open the door. Register yourself as administrator in the app as soon as the lock is fitted.
Lock and unlock are working back to front - why?
The door opening direction setting in the app does not match your door. FORGE makes this calibration mandatory during setup: choose whether the door opens to the left or right as seen from outside.

Power and Batteries

What batteries does it use and how long do they last?
Four AA alkaline batteries, which FORGE rates at 6 to 12 months depending on use. They sit behind the battery cover on the inside panel, held by a screw at the top.
How do I know the battery is low?
The lock says "low battery" when you unlock. At that point there are roughly 50 to 100 unlocks left - replace all four AAs soon.
The battery is flat and I'm outside - how do I get in?
Use the mechanical key, or power the lock through the USB-C emergency port next to the keyhole with a power bank and a USB-A to USB-C cable. A USB-C to USB-C cable may not work: the power bank can mistake the lock for a fast-charge device and not supply power.

Installation and Fit

What doors does it fit?
Timber and aluminium doors 35-110 mm thick, with a deadbolt mortice in the door edge. The lock is 72.10 mm wide and 199.30 mm high on each side. Check what is on the door now and the backset before ordering.
What backset does it need?
FORGE's manual gives no fixed backset; its cut-out template is for reference and says to adjust for customised backsets. Measure yours with our backset guide, or send us photos and we will check it.
The lock will not unlock smoothly after fitting - what is wrong?
Most often the spindle is too long. FORGE says to cut it to the door thickness using the markings on it. Also check that the panels are square to each other and the bolt is not binding in the strike (troubleshooting in Chapter 12).
Can I install it myself?
A handy person with the right tools can - the manual walks through the template, mortice, panels, spindle and batteries step by step. On an aluminium door or a door with no existing deadbolt hole, an installer is usually quicker; Terry's offers installation across the Gold Coast.

Security, Lockout and Reset

What happens if someone keeps trying wrong codes?
After five wrong attempts in a row the lock stops responding for 90 seconds.
How do I factory reset the lock?
Remove the battery cover, hold the reset button until the voice asks for the initialisation password, then enter 000# on the keypad (manual page 19). Everything is erased and the lock returns to its factory state - default code 123456, any fingerprint opens - so register a new administrator straight away.
Where should I keep the mechanical keys?
Outside the house - FORGE advises against keeping them indoors, where they are no help if the battery fails. A car, a trusted neighbour or a key safe all work.

Passage Mode and Everyday Use

How does Passage Mode work?
In the app go to Settings, Passage Mode, switch it on and set a schedule if you want one. During the passage period, unlock the door once by hand and it stays unlocked; when the period ends it locks itself.
Can I see who has unlocked the door?
Yes - the TTLock app keeps entry records; with the G5 gateway you can check them from anywhere.

Weather and Outdoor Use

Can it go on a door exposed to rain?
The outside panel is IP66 rated for rain, sun and dust; the inside panel is not weather rated. FORGE's rating does not cover driving rain, hail, constant salt spray, flooding or immersion, and it recommends a rain hood or cover where the lock takes the weather head-on.
Is it suitable near the coast?
FORGE's disclaimer names constant salt spray as beyond what the rating covers, and light fading, dulling or minor oxidation of the finish over time as normal ageing rather than a defect. Keep it out of direct salt spray and read coastal environments.

Warranty and Claims

What warranty does it have and how do I claim?
FORGE's 2-year warranty from the date of delivery, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Claims go through us - start with our Returns and Warranty page with your proof of purchase. Water damage beyond the IP66 rating and normal wear, including finish fading, are excluded.

Exclusions

The FORGE warranty does not cover:

  • Improper installation, maintenance or operation, including not following FORGE's product specifications or instructions
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Misuse, abuse, negligence or accident
  • Modification by anyone other than FORGE Electrical
  • External causes such as natural disasters
  • Damage from excessive rain, water ingress, flooding or other liquid exposure beyond the product's rated IP protection level
  • Cosmetic ageing of outdoor finishes - light colour fading, surface dulling or minor oxidation from UV exposure, humidity and temperature changes
IP Ratings Are Not a Guarantee Against Extreme Weather
IP ratings on FORGE outdoor locks are intended for general outdoor conditions - rain, sun and dust. They do not guarantee performance under extreme exposure such as driving rain, hailstorms, constant salt spray, flooding or immersion.

Important Notes

Outdoor Installations
In unusually harsh or exposed locations, FORGE strongly recommends fitting a rain cover or protective hood over the lock to shield it from direct weather and driving rain. If your product has been exposed to water, contact us for support.
Your Rights Under the Australian Consumer Law

You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.
