The FORGE Australian Oval Cylinder Smart Lock (FECYLDSA matt silver / FECYLDBA matt black) replaces the outside oval cylinder of a compatible Australian mortice lockset with a smart knob - fingerprint, PIN code, MIFARE M1 card, the TTLock app and a mechanical key. The existing mortice lock and door furniture stay where they are.

Fit is decided by two measurements: a cylinder length of 31.5-39 mm (with the cylinder extender for anything over 31.5 mm) and a backset of at least 25 mm. The knob's physical buttons carry the digits 1-6, so passcodes use only those digits. It talks Bluetooth to the TTLock app, with FORGE's optional G5 gateway for remote unlock, and runs on 2 x CR123A batteries for about 6-10 months. The outside knob is rated IP55, so it suits a sheltered door.

FORGE notes that this cylinder does not come with an internal turn snib - inside, your lockset keeps its own turn or lever. For a European-profile lock, see the FORGE European Cylinder Smart Lock. Made in China for FORGE, an Australian brand based in Ringwood, Victoria, with FORGE's 2-year warranty.

Access Methods

Access Method Available Details
Fingerprint Yes - up to 200 The reader is in the face of the outside knob. Fingerprints can be permanent, time-limited or recurring, and a Forced Fingerprint sends the administrator an alarm notification.
PIN Code Yes - up to 150 Physical buttons around the knob carry the digits 1-6 plus * and #, so every passcode uses only 1-6; codes are 4-9 digits (manual page 14). Permanent, time-limited, one-time and recurring codes - TTLock passcode types.
RFID Card Yes - up to 200 MIFARE M1 cards are read at the knob. Extra FORGE MIFARE 1K cards are sold separately.
TTLock App Yes - Bluetooth Unlock from the TTLock app within about 5-10 metres, and share eKeys with other TTLock users.
Remote Unlock With the G5 gateway Add the FORGE TTLock G5 gateway for remote unlock and management. FORGE also names its DB2 video doorbell, which has a gateway built in.
Mechanical Key Yes The cylinder keeps a mechanical key - the backup if the batteries go flat.

Inside, the door is opened with your existing lockset's turn or lever - the smart cylinder replaces the outside cylinder only.

TTLock App

TTLock logo

Set the lock up in the free TTLock app, available for iOS and Android iOS App StoreAndroid Google Play. Choose Australia as your location when you sign up, give the app full permissions and turn Bluetooth on. Until the first administrator is added the lock is in its factory state - the default admin code is 123456 and any fingerprint will open it - so pair it as soon as it is fitted. FORGE's TTLock pairing guide shows the steps; keep your phone within 2 metres while pairing. The introduction pages of the manual cover the same ground for this model.

TTLock is one of the two global smart lock platforms - how it compares with Tuya is set out in our TTLock vs Tuya comparison, and the wider TTLock range in Chapter 14 - the TTLock hardware ecosystem. The app itself is covered in the TTLock app user manual.

TTLock
Bluetooth at the door, remote with a gateway
Without a gateway the AU Oval Cylinder is managed over Bluetooth when your phone is within about 5-10 metres - see what a TTLock lock can do without Wi-Fi. FORGE offers the FORGE TTLock G5 gateway as the add-on for remote Wi-Fi management and unlocking: with it plugged in within range you can unlock on demand from anywhere, change codes, check records and set a passage-mode schedule remotely - Bluetooth vs gateway in Chapter 14. Remote Unlock has to be switched on in the app and Power Saving Mode turned off (manual page 18).

Suitable Uses

  • Timber and aluminium doors with a compatible Australian oval-cylinder mortice lockset - an existing-hardware upgrade without replacing the lock.
  • Front, side and back doors sheltered from direct rain - under an eave, porch or awning.
  • Homes and rentals that want fingerprint, code and card entry with a key backup (TTLock for short stays with a gateway).
  • Offices and shared premises where staff codes and cards are managed in TTLock (audit trails).
Not suitable for
  • A required cylinder length over 39 mm - FORGE rates it not suitable.
  • A backset under 25 mm.
  • Inward-opening doors where the knob would hit the jamb as the door closes - check before ordering.
  • European-profile, round or rim cylinders - this is the Australian oval profile.
  • Doors exposed to driving rain - the outside knob is IP55.

Will It Fit? Cylinder Length and Backset

This cylinder replaces an existing Australian oval cylinder, so the fit comes down to the cylinder length and the backset - not a door-thickness range. FORGE's measurement guide (PDF) and manual page 5 set out the check.

Required cylinder length What FORGE says
Under 31.5 mm Default configuration - no extender
31.5-39 mm Extended configuration - fit the supplied cylinder extender
Over 39 mm Not suitable
Measure before you order
  • Cylinder length - with or without a handle, measure from the centre of the cylinder screw hole in the lock's faceplate to the outside surface of the cylinder cover plate. Include any outside cover plate.
  • Backset - FORGE's minimum is 25 mm, measured from the door edge to the centre of the cylinder.
  • Jamb clearance - on an inward-opening door with a door jamb, check the 40 mm knob will clear the jamb as the door closes.
  • Inside - this cylinder comes with no internal turn snib; your lockset's own inside turn or lever stays.
  • Not sure? Send us a photo of the faceplate and the cylinder with a tape measure in shot and we will check it with you.

Measuring tips for faceplates and cylinders are in examples of helpful photos.

FORGE also names its DB2 video doorbell, which has a TTLock gateway built in, as a remote route for this lock - ask us if you want one. Other gateways are in the modules and Wi-Fi gateways category, and more cards and fobs in the RFID credentials range.

Battery and Emergency Power

Power, warnings and backup
The cylinder runs on 2 x CR123A lithium batteries behind the cover on the outside knob, rated by FORGE at about 6-10 months depending on use. FORGE's parts drawing marks the batteries as not included, so buy a pair with the lock. To change them, undo the battery cover screw, turn the cap anticlockwise, lift the cover and fit the cells the right way round (manual page 8). The lock warns you when it has roughly 50 to 100 unlocks left - replace both cells then. There is no USB emergency port on this cylinder: the mechanical key is the backup if the batteries go flat, so keep a key somewhere away from the door (key storage ideas). More on what really affects battery life and power and battery FAQs.

Weather Rating - IP55 Outside Knob

Weather rating
IP55 outside knob
FORGE rates the outside smart-cylinder assembly IP55 against dust and low-pressure water jets when correctly installed, with a working range of -10 to 55 degrees C and 0-95% humidity. It suits a door that is sheltered from direct rain - under an eave, porch or awning. It is not designed for driving rain, salt spray, flooding or immersion; FORGE recommends a rain hood where the door is exposed, and water damage beyond the rating is not covered by the warranty (non-warranty disclaimer). IP55 is a lower rating than FORGE's outdoor gate locks - see IP ratings explained and, on the coast, coastal environments.

Dimensions

FORGE Australian oval smart cylinder dimensions - default configuration 100 mm overall with a 36.5 mm cylinder, extended configuration 107 mm with the extender, 57 mm long by 40 mm diameter knob, oval profile 31.5 by 18 mm
FORGE's drawing of the cylinder: the default configuration is 100 mm overall (36.5 mm cylinder, screw hole 31.5 mm from the knob face) and the extended configuration with the cylinder extender is 107 mm (44 mm cylinder, screw hole at 39 mm). The knob is 57 mm long and 40 mm across; the oval profile is 31.5 x 18 mm (manual page 3).

Before ordering, measure the cylinder length on your door as shown in FORGE's measurement guide (PDF) - see Will It Fit? above. The guide is also in the Dimensions tab.

Platform and Data

Platform. The AU Oval Cylinder runs on TTLock - Bluetooth to your phone, with the TTLock G5 gateway for remote access. Remote unlock and management need the gateway; at the door the lock works without the internet.

Where your data goes. TTLock is run by Sciener, a Chinese company. Accounts outside China use TTLock's out-of-China servers; where that infrastructure is hosted, and which region Australian accounts use, is not published - in short, a Chinese company's servers, location unpublished. For the platform-by-platform picture see where each smart lock platform hosts its data, and for TTLock's security record see Chapter 14 - TTLock security.

Installation

Fitting is a cylinder swap: the existing oval cylinder comes out on its cylinder screw and the smart cylinder goes in its place. The installation section of the manual runs through each step with drawings.

Installation Tips
  • Measure the cylinder length first and fit the extender if you need 31.5-39 mm - undo the tailpiece screw, add the extender and refit (manual page 6).
  • Remove the existing cylinder by undoing the cylinder screw in the faceplate (manual page 7).
  • Fit the 2 x CR123A batteries before installing - battery cover screw out, cap anticlockwise, cover off, cells in the right way round (manual page 8).
  • Slide the cylinder through, line its screw hole up with the faceplate and refit the cylinder screw (manual page 9).
  • Check it: the outside knob should turn freely while locked, and 123456# should engage the knob so it turns the lock (manual page 11). Keep the keys outside the premises while you test.
  • Unsure about the length or backset? Terry's offers installation across the Gold Coast.

Which way a door is handed is explained in how to tell which way your door or gate opens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it fit my lock?
If your lockset takes an Australian oval cylinder, the required cylinder length is 39 mm or less, and the backset is at least 25 mm - see Will It Fit? above and FORGE's measurement guide.
Why can I only use digits 1-6?
The knob has six number buttons plus * and #, so passcodes can only use 1-6. Codes are 4-9 digits long.
Does it include an inside turn snib?
No - FORGE notes it comes without one. Inside, the door is worked by your existing lockset's turn or lever.
Can I unlock it remotely?
Yes, with the optional FORGE TTLock G5 gateway. Without it, the app works over Bluetooth within about 5-10 metres.
What batteries does it take?
2 x CR123A lithium cells, for about 6-10 months. FORGE's parts drawing marks them as not included. The mechanical key is the backup if they go flat.

Additional Information

  • Measure the cylinder length before ordering. Under 31.5 mm uses the default configuration, 31.5-39 mm needs the extender and anything longer will not fit.
  • Register an administrator straight away. Until the first administrator is added in the app, the lock is in its factory state with the default code 123456.
  • Buy batteries with it. It runs on 2 x CR123A cells, which FORGE's parts drawing shows as not included.
  • Shelter matters. The outside knob is IP55 - fine under an eave or porch, not for a door that takes driving rain.
  • Keep the mechanical keys away from the door - there is no USB emergency port, so the key is the backup (key storage ideas).

FORGE Australian Oval Cylinder Smart Lock - FAQ, Setup and Owner's Guide

Everything below is here to help you choose, fit, set up and live with the FORGE AU Oval Cylinder. For general smart lock questions see our Smart Lock FAQ (Chapter 13), and for measuring and fitting the Buyer's Guide.

Fit and Measuring

How do I measure the cylinder length?
With or without a handle on the door, measure from the centre of the cylinder screw hole in the faceplate to the outside surface of the cylinder cover plate, including any outside cover plate (manual page 5).
What do the length numbers mean?
Under 31.5 mm: use the cylinder as it comes. 31.5-39 mm: fit the supplied cylinder extender. Over 39 mm: FORGE rates it not suitable.
What backset does it need?
At least 25 mm, measured from the door edge to the centre of the cylinder - how to measure backset.
Does it suit an inward-opening door?
Usually, but check that the 40 mm knob clears the door jamb as the door closes - FORGE flags it on inward-opening doors with a jamb.
Is this the right cylinder for a euro-profile lock?
No - this is the Australian oval profile. For a European-profile mortice lock, see the FORGE European Cylinder Smart Lock, which also includes an internal turn snib.
How do I get a fingerprint to register reliably?
Press the finger firmly on the sensor several times when prompted, moving it slightly each time so the lock captures different areas. Avoid wet fingers. Older people can have flatter fingerprints - register the same finger more than once. Children's fingerprints change as they grow, so update them every few months or give them a passcode.
What is a Forced Fingerprint?
A duress fingerprint. You register it like any other, but when it is used the administrator receives an alarm notification. It is meant for an emergency where someone is forcing you to open the door, not for daily use.
What kinds of passcodes can I create?
Four: time-limited, one-time (it must be used within 6 hours of being created), permanent and recurring. Time-limited, permanent and recurring codes must be used once within 24 hours of their start time or the lock suspends them. Codes are generated by the app and can be customised afterwards, 4 to 9 digits (manual page 14; Chapter 14 - passcode types).
Which RFID cards does it use?
MIFARE M1 cards - up to 200. Extra FORGE MIFARE 1K cards are sold separately.
What is an eKey?
An eKey gives another TTLock account the right to unlock - time-limited, one-time, permanent or recurring - with options for remote unlock, an unlock link that works without the app, or near-administrator rights (TTLock eKeys).
What happens after several wrong attempts?
After five wrong attempts in a row the lock ignores all input for 90 seconds. The keypad goes back to sleep after 20 seconds without use.
Why does my passcode not work?
The knob only has digits 1-6, so a code containing 0, 7, 8 or 9 cannot be entered. Create codes using 1-6 only, 4-9 digits long.

Remote Access and the G5 Gateway

Do I need the G5 gateway?
Only for remote use. Fingerprint, PIN and card entry work with no phone at all, and the app works over Bluetooth within about 5-10 metres. Add the FORGE TTLock G5 gateway to unlock on demand, change codes or check records from away from home - what a gateway actually does and the G5 explained.
Where should the gateway go?
Plug it in indoors within Bluetooth range of the lock, on a 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network - the closer the better, with as few walls as possible in between. If the lock keeps dropping off, see the real fixes for Wi-Fi dropouts and gateway placement.
Why does remote unlock not work after adding the gateway?
Remote Unlock must be switched on for the lock in the app, and Power Saving Mode turned off (manual page 18). Check that the gateway shows the lock in range.
Can I add a hand-held remote?
Yes - FORGE offers the FORGE TTLock Bluetooth remote as an add-on for the AU Oval Cylinder. It unlocks at close range without the app or a code.

Power and Batteries

How long do the batteries last?
About 6-10 months on 2 x CR123A, depending on use. The lock warns you when roughly 50 to 100 unlocks remain.
What if the batteries go flat?
Use the mechanical key - this cylinder has no USB emergency port. Then fit two new CR123A cells.

Installation and Troubleshooting

How do I fit the extender?
Undo the tailpiece screw, add the cylinder extender and refit the screws (manual page 6).
How do I factory reset it?
Hold the reset button for 5 seconds, then enter 000# at the prompt (manual page 19). This returns the lock to the default code 123456.
The knob spins without unlocking - is it faulty?
No - while locked the outside knob turns freely. Once a fingerprint, code, card or the app is accepted, the knob engages the cylinder and turns the lock.

  • Misuse, abuse, negligence or accident
  • Modification by anyone other than FORGE Electrical
  • External causes such as natural disasters
  • Damage from excessive rain, water ingress, flooding or other liquid exposure beyond the product's rated IP protection level
  • Cosmetic ageing of outdoor finishes - light colour fading, surface dulling or minor oxidation from UV exposure, humidity and temperature changes
IP Ratings Are Not a Guarantee Against Extreme Weather
IP ratings on FORGE outdoor locks are intended for general outdoor conditions - rain, sun and dust. They do not guarantee performance under extreme exposure such as driving rain, hailstorms, constant salt spray, flooding or immersion.

Important Notes

Outdoor Installations
In unusually harsh or exposed locations, FORGE strongly recommends fitting a rain cover or protective hood over the lock to shield it from direct weather and driving rain. If your product has been exposed to water, contact us for support.
Your Rights Under the Australian Consumer Law

You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.
