The FORGE RD6 Double-Sided Video Doorbell Smart Rim Lock (FERMRD6B) is a surface-mounted automatic rim lock for outdoor doors and pedestrian gates, with credentials on both sides: face, palm vein, fingerprint, PIN code and card on the outside keypad, fingerprint and card on the inside rim lock, a key on both sides and a wireless remote in the box.
Wi-Fi is built in: it joins your 2.4 GHz network and runs on FORGE's Forge Smart app on the Tuya platform, with no gateway. Its 1 MP video doorbell lets you see and answer visitors in the app, and remote unlock answers a call from the door. The 304 stainless steel double-hook latch locks itself when the door or gate closes, both units are IP66 rated, and it suits doors and gates 18-100 mm thick.
For TTLock with a gateway and a keypad on the outside only, see the FORGE RD1T rim lock; for a mortice gate lock, the FORGE H100. Made in China for FORGE, an Australian brand based in Ringwood, Victoria, with FORGE's 2-year warranty.
Usually ships in 24 hours.
Owned by FORGE Electrical (Australia) · Manufactured in China. Our independent FORGE brand profile sets out how the range compares with the other brands we stock.
Access Methods
From the inside you can also lock by pressing the fingerprint reader; from the outside, the Lock (*) key locks it manually.

Forge Smart (Tuya) App
Set the RD6 up in FORGE's Forge Smart app, built on the Tuya platform, for iOS and Android ![]()
. Register the first administrator on the keypad first - swipe, press 0# and enter a 6-12 digit code twice (manual page 18). Then sign up in the app choosing Australia, give it full permissions and turn Bluetooth on. The RD6 needs a 2.4 GHz network - 5 GHz is not supported. On the keypad press 0#, your administrator credential, 2 System Settings, 3 Wireless Module, 1 Turn On Wireless; the 0 key flashes for about 2 minutes while you add the lock in the app (manual page 24).
Until an administrator is registered, the RD6 is in its factory state and opens to any face, fingerprint, code or card, so register yourself as soon as it is fitted (manual page 17).
Wi-Fi is built into the RD6, so there is no gateway to buy, and FORGE offers none for it. Remote unlock works on request: a visitor presses the doorbell, you see them on the camera and unlock from the call in the app (manual page 23). Per FORGE's published comparison, Forge Smart locks do not unlock on demand from off-site, have no scheduled passage mode in the app and no Alexa or Google, and have no API. Online and offline passwords, entry records, notifications and Tuya automations work from the app - see the Forge Smart (Tuya) platform in Chapter 15. Live view, doorbell notifications and motion alerts (off by default - manual page 26) run over the same Wi-Fi.
Which platform suits you is set out in our TTLock vs Tuya comparison and which smart lock platform is right for you. For on-demand remote unlock and scheduling on a rim lock, look at the TTLock version of the RD1T with a gateway.

Suitable Uses
- Pedestrian gates and outdoor doors where people need to get in from both sides (external gate smart locks).
- Entrances where you want to see and answer visitors - the camera and doorbell are built into the keypad.
- Gates on flush or offset posts, and gate-to-wall fits, with a flat mounting surface for both units.
- Homes that want app control, alerts and a remote in the box without buying a gateway.
- Doors or gates without a continuous flat surface for both units - the IP66 seal depends on it (FORGE).
- Lock boxes smaller than 85 x 250 mm.
- Doors or gates thinner than 18 mm or thicker than 100 mm.
- 5 GHz-only Wi-Fi - the RD6 needs a 2.4 GHz network.
- Sites that need on-demand remote unlock, scheduled passage mode or Alexa / Google - choose a TTLock model with a gateway.

Door and Gate Fit
The RD6 is a rim lock: the keypad mounts on the outside face, the rim lock on the inside face, and a spindle, two screws and a data cable pass through the door - there is no mortice and no backset to choose. FORGE rates it for doors and gates 18-100 mm thick, on flush gate-to-post, offset gate-to-post and gate-to-wall installations. Check the mounting area, thickness, opening direction, frame type and latch position before you order.
- A continuous flat surface for both units - the whole back of the keypad and of the rim lock must sit flush against the door or gate for the IP66 seal. FORGE says not to fit either unit across raised edges, gaps, framing, decorative sections, welds or uneven surfaces.
- Lock box - at least 85 mm wide and 250 mm high of flat mounting area.
- Frame type - the latch receiver suits a flush frame or gate post; the latch plate suits an offset or thicker frame and door-to-wall fits (manual page 4).
- Gap - FORGE's template marks a maximum 10 mm gap between the door edge and the latch receiver.
- Thickness and handing - doors and gates 18-100 mm thick; left or right, inward or outward opening (the template turns over for right-opening doors - how to tell which way it opens).
- Not sure? Send us a photo of both sides and your measurements (helpful photo examples) and we will check the fit with you.

FORGE Outdoor Gate and Rim Smart Locks
This product is the bold row. 'Both sides' means credentials can be used from inside as well as outside - see why double-sided locks suit gates. Every model here is in our external gate range.
Accessories and Spares
The wireless remote comes in the box. FORGE offers no gateway for the RD6 - Wi-Fi is built in. More cards and fobs are in the RFID credentials range.
Battery and Emergency Power
The RD6 runs on a 3,500 mAh rechargeable lithium battery in the inside rim lock - typically about 3-6 months per charge, depending on settings, Wi-Fi use and traffic (FORGE). The proximity sensor and motion detection draw more, so leave them off unless you need them (manual page 22). Charge the battery fully before fitting it (manual page 12). The low-battery warning starts with about 50-100 unlocks left - recharge then. If the battery goes flat, connect a 5 V / 1 A power bank to the USB-C port on the outside keypad with a USB-A to USB-C cable and unlock normally (manual page 28), or use the key. More on what really affects battery life and power and battery FAQs.

Weather Rating - IP66 Keypad and Rim Lock
FORGE rates the RD6 IP66 for suitable outdoor door and gate installations - an aluminium body and a tempered glass keypad. The rating depends on the installation: both units must sit flat against a continuous surface, and the mounting plate's drainage port must point down (manual page 11). FORGE's manual sets out the limits of IP66, suggests a rain cover where the lock takes the weather and points to the IP68 H100 for harsher spots (manual page 29). On the coast, read coastal environments and IP ratings explained.

Dimensions
Check the door thickness (18-100 mm) and the flat mounting area for both units - see Door and Gate Fit above.
Platform and Data
Platform. The RD6 runs on FORGE's Forge Smart app on the Tuya platform, with Wi-Fi built in - it joins your 2.4 GHz network directly, with no gateway. Remote unlock answers a doorbell call, per FORGE's published comparison.
Where your data goes. Tuya is a Chinese company headquartered in Hangzhou with regional data centres; by Tuya's own published country table, Australian accounts are provisioned to its Central Europe data centre, and there is no Australian data centre. The region the Forge Smart app uses for Australian accounts is being confirmed. For the platform-by-platform picture see where each smart lock platform hosts its data, and for how Tuya compares with TTLock data sovereignty in our TTLock vs Tuya comparison.
Installation
The RD6's keypad mounts on the outside face and the rim lock on a mounting plate on the inside, joined by a spindle, two M5 screws and a data cable through the door. FORGE's installation template goes on the inside face of the door, turned over for right-opening doors; the installation section of the manual has drawings for each step.
- Fit the keypad with its rubber pad and the M5 threaded standoffs that suit your door thickness, and feed the data cable through (manual page 8).
- Cut the spindle to the door thickness plus 16 mm (manual page 9), and the M5 connection screws to the door thickness plus 2 mm (manual page 11).
- Fit the mounting plate with its drainage port pointing down, and set the rim lock's spindle-hub mark towards the battery compartment (manual page 12).
- Fit the latch receiver for a flush frame or post, or the latch plate for a thicker frame or a door-to-wall fit with its triangle mark towards the outside (manual page 13; manual page 14).
- Check the key works from both sides, a swipe lights the keypad and 123456# opens it, and the latch lines up with the receiver (manual page 15) - misalignment is the usual cause of a latch that will not catch.
- Terry's offers installation across the Gold Coast.
Which way a door is handed is explained in how to tell which way your door or gate opens.
Frequently Asked Questions
When a visitor presses the doorbell you get a call in the Forge Smart app with live video, and you can unlock from it. Per FORGE's published comparison, Forge Smart remote unlock answers a request at the door - it does not open on demand without someone there.
Yes - the inside rim lock has its own fingerprint and card reader. Register fingerprints on each side separately; cards sync between the two.
Yes - one wireless remote, good for up to about 20 m (FORGE). Remotes share the 900 IDs with cards and codes.
A continuous flat surface for both units - at least 85 x 250 mm on a lock box - so the IP66 seal can form. It suits doors and gates 18-100 mm thick.
No - Wi-Fi is built in, and FORGE offers no gateway for the RD6. It needs a 2.4 GHz network.
Additional Information
- Register an administrator straight away. Until then the RD6 opens to any face, fingerprint, code or card.
- Use a 2.4 GHz network. 5 GHz is not supported - if your router combines bands, pair on the 2.4 GHz band.
- Remote unlock is a request, not a button. Someone has to press the doorbell for you to let them in from the app.
- Plan the mounting surface. Both units need a continuous flat face for the IP66 seal - welds, rails and decorative panels get in the way.
- Charge before fitting, and keep the keys away from the gate (key storage ideas).
Warranty
2-year FORGE warranty from the date of delivery - covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. Excludes improper installation or maintenance, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear (including fading or dulling of finishes) and water damage beyond the product's rated IP protection. FORGE RD6 Double-Sided Video Doorbell Smart Rim Lock - FAQ, Setup and Owner's Guide
Everything below is here to help you choose, fit, set up and live with the FORGE RD6. For general smart lock questions see our Smart Lock FAQ (Chapter 13), and for measuring and fitting the Buyer's Guide.
Choosing the RD6
Both are surface-mounted automatic rim locks. The RD6 adds face and palm vein recognition, a video doorbell, a fingerprint and card reader on the inside and a remote in the box, on Forge Smart Wi-Fi. The RD1T has its keypad on the outside only and comes in TTLock or Forge Smart versions.
The RD6 surface-mounts on the gate and needs a flat area for both units. The H100 is a lever gate lock on a mortice inside the frame, IP68 rated, with keypads on both sides.
Forge Smart App and Wi-Fi
FORGE's Forge Smart app on the Tuya platform; FORGE says Smart Life and Tuya also work (manual page 23).
It needs a 2.4 GHz network - 5 GHz is not supported. If your router merges its bands, see band steering and pair on 2.4 GHz.
A visitor presses the doorbell; you get a video call in the app and can unlock from it. It does not unlock on demand without someone at the door.
Yes - motion detection is off by default. Turn it on with 0#, 6666# and your administrator credential, and set the trigger time; alerts and event images then appear in the app (manual page 26).
Yes - the app keeps access records and sends doorbell and low-battery notifications.
Credentials and Settings
Swipe the keypad, press 0# and enter a 6-12 digit code twice for user 001, then add more credentials (manual page 18). Guests are added from Manage Users, with allowed unlock periods if you want them.
0.3-0.5 m from the camera; for palm vein, 10-20 cm. Face and palm are in manual mode by default - swipe the keypad to wake it (manual page 20).
Yes - set it to auto-lock, or set passage hours (from - to) when it stays open; outside those hours it locks itself when the door closes (manual page 21).
A proximity sensor that wakes the camera as you approach. It is off by default; levels 1 (0.3 m) and 2 (0.5 m) are recommended - levels 3 and 4 shorten battery life (manual page 22).
After five failed attempts the RD6 locks out for 5 minutes.
Fit and Mounting
The latch receiver for a flush frame or gate post; the latch plate for a thicker frame or a door-to-wall fit. Both are in the box (manual page 4).
18-100 mm, per FORGE.
Power and Batteries
About 3-6 months on the 3,500 mAh battery, depending on settings and use (FORGE). The warning starts with about 50-100 unlocks left.
Connect a 5 V / 1 A power bank to the USB-C port on the outside keypad with a USB-A to USB-C cable and unlock normally (manual page 28), or use the key.
Installation and Troubleshooting
Take the inside rim lock off its mounting plate with the data cable and battery still connected, and hold the Reset button on its back until the prompt (manual page 27).
Check the latch lines up with the receiver or plate, and that the gap is no more than 10 mm - see misalignment in Chapter 12.
