McGrath A231 Slimline Digital Smart Lock - Sliding Doors (Hook Bolt)
The McGrath A231 is an ultra-slim 5-in-1 digital smart lock engineered specifically for sliding aluminium doors where space is limited. With an exceptionally narrow 31 mm lock body, the A231 is one of the slimmest smart locks in the McGrath range, making it ideal for the narrow stile sliding door frames commonly used in residential and light-commercial applications.
This sliding-door variant is supplied with a European hook bolt mortice suited to sliding door frames. The hook bolt throws into the strike and pulls the door tight for secure retention - the correct locking action for a slider, where a standard latch bolt cannot hold. It is available with a 28 mm or 35 mm backset to suit varying door profiles.
Lock configuration and user management are handled through the McGrath Locks App using Bluetooth as standard. Access can be issued via PIN codes, RFID credentials, fingerprint recognition, Bluetooth eKeys, or a mechanical key override. Optional remote access is available when the lock is paired with a compatible McGrath Locks Wi-Fi gateway.
Usually same day if ordered before 11am AEST (excluding weekends and QLD public holidays).

Sliding doors need a hook bolt mortice rather than a standard latch, because the bolt must pull the door tight into the frame. This A231 sliding variant is supplied with exactly that. If you are not sure which door type you have, our Buyer's Guide covers the differences - see Chapter 04 - Smart Lock Door Types.

Frequently Asked Questions
Both share the same ultra-slim 31 mm A231 body and the same 5-in-1 access. The difference is the mortice: this sliding variant is supplied with a European hook bolt mortice that pulls the door tight into the frame, which is the correct action for a slider. The hinged A231 uses a standard latching mortice. Order the version that matches your door.
The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the cylinder. Narrow aluminium sliding stiles usually take the 28 mm backset; wider profiles may take 35 mm. Measure your existing hardware or door prep before ordering - see how to measure your lock backset. The mortice cross-section is illustrated in the Dimensions tab and the Mortice Lock Options image.
Not out of the box - the A231 runs on Bluetooth for local control. To unlock, manage credentials, or view access history remotely, add a compatible McGrath Locks Wi-Fi gateway. For guidance on choosing one, see the G2 vs G3 vs G4 vs G5 gateway comparison.
The external housing is rated IP65, which handles rain splash and humidity in a sheltered position - under an eave, patio, or alfresco roof. The internal unit is not IP rated, so avoid fully exposed installations without overhead protection. For more on IP ratings, see Chapter 11 - Australian Smart Lock Standards.
Yes. The McGrath Locks App supports the TTRenting and TTHotel platforms for time-limited PIN codes and eKeys. Issuing or revoking codes remotely (without visiting the property) requires a McGrath gateway to keep the lock connected; on-site codes can be set over Bluetooth without one. See our guide to using TTLock for Airbnb in Australia and Chapter 07 - Airbnb and Short-Stay Rentals.
Additional Information
Sliding door version - order the right variant: This is the sliding-door A231 with a hook bolt mortice. It is not interchangeable with the hinged A231. If your door swings on hinges, order the hinged A231 instead. Confirm your door type before ordering.
Narrow stile fit: At 31 mm wide, the A231 is one of the slimmest smart locks available and fits most narrow aluminium sliding stiles. Very narrow or unusual profiles should still be checked against the Dimensions drawings before ordering - see Chapter 02 - Measuring Your Door.
Installation: The lock ships with a drill positioning template, installation guide, and strike plate. Terry's recommends professional installation for correct alignment of the hook bolt and strike on a sliding door, where alignment tolerances are tighter than on a hinged door. Incorrect strike alignment is a common cause of locking faults - see 3 common DIY installation mistakes and easy fixes.
Brand and support: McGrath Locks are distributed in Australia through Terry's Locksmiths and supported by LSC (Locksmith Supply Company). For context on the distribution chain and long-term parts availability, see our overview of smart lock brands in Australia.
