The McGrath Euro 85 Hook is the sliding and bifold door member of the McGrath mortice range - the body that goes under the A231 sliding-door smart lock. Where a swing-door body throws a straight bolt into the frame, this one throws a stainless steel hook bolt that reaches into the keeper and pulls the panel closed against it, which is how a mortice lock holds a door that slides rather than swings. This is the 35mm backset body. It is a mechanical lock body only: a 1.5mm SS304 stainless steel case, an SS304 hook bolt, an 8mm square spindle hub and a Euro profile cylinder aperture. There are no electronics, no batteries and no app in this listing - the smart lock furniture sits over it and does the thinking. It shares the 85mm pitch (the spindle-to-cylinder centre distance) and the 8mm spindle of every Euro 85 body, so the same A-Series furniture fits, but its 270 x 22mm faceplate and 208mm-high case are longer than the 240mm swing body - the two are not interchangeable in a prepared door.
Two backsets exist - 28mm and 35mm - and the choice is set by the stile of your sliding panel, not by preference. Compatible McGrath Smart Locks
McGrath names three 85mm-pitch slimline locks for the hook body. In practice the A231 for sliding doors is the one sold with it; the A210 and A236 are hinged-door locks on their own pages, so pairing either with a hook body only comes up when that furniture is being fitted to a sliding panel - check the door with us before ordering that combination.
Not for the NX5 - the hook sheet does not name it, and the NX5 is a hinged-door lock that takes the 60/50 spindle mortice or the Euro 85 swing body. Not for the NX1, Albion, NX6 or NX6W either. The five McGrath mortice families are compared in our range guide.

Hinged (swing) doors - a hook bolt needs the door to move sideways to disengage; on a hinged door it will not clear the keeper. Use the Euro 85 swing body in 28 to 50mm, 60mm or 70mm backset - our guide covers the swing family. Fire doors - no fire rating is published for this body, and the A231 is not fire assessed. Measure from the edge of the sliding panel to the centre of the existing spindle or cylinder hole - our backset guide shows exactly where to put the tape. If it reads 35mm, this is the body; 28mm is the 28mm hook body (MLEMHK2885SS270). On a brand-new A231 the choice is made at checkout on the lock page. A body with the wrong backset will not line the spindle up with the furniture, and on a sliding door there is rarely room to move the preparation.
No. The hook bolt locks by pulling the panel sideways against the keeper and releases by sliding back out of it - a hinged door swings away from the frame instead, so the hook cannot clear. For a hinged door use the Euro 85 swing body (28 to 50mm), the 60mm or the 70mm, with the hinged-door A231, A210 or A236. The hook-versus-bolt section of our guide explains the difference.
No cylinder is included. The body has the Euro profile aperture but ships without one - order the McGrath cylinder that matches your lock from Accessories and Spares, or reuse the cylinder from your existing body. The keyhole ends up on the outside escutcheon of the smart lock, 85mm below the spindle; the cylinder sits inside this mortice and is the lock's mechanical key override.
The A231 for sliding doors is the lock sold with it. McGrath's hook sheet also names the A210 and A236, which share the 85mm pitch and 8mm spindle - but both are sold as hinged-door locks, so ask us before pairing either with a hook body. It does not suit the NX5 (the hook sheet does not name it - use the Euro 85 swing or 60/50 spindle bodies), the NX1 or Albion (60/50 spindle mortice) or the NX6 / NX6W (Euro 60/68 body). Close the panel and lift the lever - the hook swings out, catches the keeper and draws the panel tight; the door is locked. To open, unlock the smart lock (PIN, fingerprint, card or app on the A231) and press the lever down; the hook retracts and the panel slides. Because a hook pulls the door closed rather than just blocking it, it also takes up the slop that lets a sliding panel rattle. Chapter 01 covers the mechanical layer under any smart lock.
Additional Information
- The keeper decides the job. A hook bolt only works if the strike plate and pocket are set at exactly the right height and depth so the hook can swing into them and pull up tight - a couple of millimetres out and the panel will feel locked but is not. It is the first of the three common installation mistakes we see, and on a sliding door it is the one to get right first. - Lockton equivalent. The Lockton E-Series sliding-door mortice body at 35mm (SML-S35) is catalogued as interchangeable with this McGrath body - same 85mm pitch, 8mm spindle and 270 x 22mm faceplate. Lockton also lists sliding bodies at 20mm and 45mm, neither of which has a McGrath counterpart, and its hinged-door bodies (SML-H35) match the McGrath swing range. - Pitch is fixed, faceplate is not. Every Euro 85 body has 85mm between spindle and cylinder because the McGrath A-Series furniture is drilled for 85mm - but the hook body's 270mm faceplate and 208mm case are longer than the swing body's 240mm and 175mm. Measuring the faceplate is the quickest way to tell which body a door was prepared for (how to measure the faceplate), and Chapter 02 covers the whole mortice lever and long-plate mortice measuring routine.
- Not fire rated. No fire rating is published for the hook body, and the McGrath fire assessments cover hinged-door configurations on the ANSI bodies and the dormakaba MS2602 - a mortice that shares a backset is not an approved combination. - Where McGrath sits. McGrath Locks is an Australian-managed brand distributed by LSC, and the hook body is what makes its slimline range work on sliding doors - see the McGrath brand profile in Chapter 10.

Choosing the Right Body
A straight deadbolt holds a hinged door because the door tries to swing away from the frame and the bolt blocks it. A sliding panel moves parallel to the frame, so a straight bolt has nothing to resist - the panel can be jiggled along it. A hook swings into the keeper and grips it, so the panel cannot be pulled back along its track. That is the whole reason the hook body exists and why it must never be swapped for a swing body - why a hook instead of a bolt covers it in more detail. Note that bolt throw, the figure quoted for straight deadbolts, has no direct equivalent on a hook.
Backset is the distance from the panel edge to the centre of the spindle - dimension B on our drawing, and explained from scratch here. Sliding aluminium stiles are narrow, so McGrath makes the hook body at 28mm and 35mm only (see the hook backset section of our guide); the swing body goes up to 70mm because timber hinged doors are deeper. 35mm is the more common of the two on aluminium patio and bifold stiles; drop to the 28mm body only if the stile will not take 46mm of case depth. Four steps: count the bolts (a curved hook is unmistakable - if you see one, you are in the right family), check for a keyhole (a Euro 85 body has a cylinder aperture), measure the backset (28 or 35mm) and measure the faceplate - 270 x 22mm on both hook bodies, against 240mm on the swing bodies. No. They share the 85mm pitch, the 8mm spindle, the 22mm faceplate width and the 35mm backset, so the same furniture fits both - but the hook body has a 270mm faceplate and 208mm case against the swing body's 240mm and 175mm, and a hook bolt instead of a latch and straight deadbolt. A door prepared for one will not take the other without re-cutting the mortice slot. Cylinders, Keys and the Mechanical Override
A Euro profile fixed-cam cylinder. McGrath keys its cylinders to the host lock, so choose by the lock on the door: the A231 keyed-to-differ cylinder or the A231 keyed-alike cylinder for multi-door sites; the A210 or A210 / A236 cylinders if that is the furniture in use. On the outside escutcheon of the smart lock, 85mm below the spindle - the cylinder sits inside this mortice and the escutcheon has a matching opening. That is why the pitch must be 85mm: it is the distance from the handle spindle to the keyhole. Yes - McGrath key blanks are model-specific: A231, A210 and A236 blanks are in the keys and key blanks category. Keyed-alike cylinders let one key open several doors on a site.
Fitting and Operation
The keeper is the whole job on a hook body. Fit the strike plate and pocket so the hook swings freely into the pocket and pulls the panel snug against the jamb - set them too high, too low or too shallow and the hook either misses or jams half-engaged. That is installation mistake number one in our troubleshooting blog, and it is worse on a sliding door because the panel can flex. McGrath does not state a handing or reversibility for the hook body on its spec sheet, so we will not guess for you. The direction the panel closes decides which way the hook must face the keeper, so tell us which way your door slides when you order and we will confirm the body suits it. The A231 sliding-door lock itself is reversible; the mortice is the part to confirm.
McGrath does not quote a door thickness range for the mortice body on its own - the body sits inside the panel and the limiting factor is the host lock's spindle length. Use the door thickness range on the A231 sliding-door lock page, and check the stile is deep enough to take the 46mm case (measuring stile width).
It throws the hook. With the panel closed, lift the lever and the hook swings out into the keeper and draws the panel tight - the door is locked. Once the smart lock is unlocked, pressing the lever down retracts the hook and the panel slides. You do not need to turn a key to lock or to unlock; the cylinder is only the backup.
Suitability and Limitations
Not on a hinged door - a hook cannot clear the keeper when the door swings away from the frame. Use the Euro 85 swing body there. Hinged security screens are also swing doors and take a swing body. Sliding security screens are a different question: this body is made for sliding and bifold panels, but the stile must take a 46mm-deep case and the host lock must be the A231 for sliding doors - the door type compatibility matrix and the glass sliding door category are the places to check.
No. No fire rating is published for the hook body, and the A231 is not fire assessed. McGrath's fire assessments (Jensen Hughes, for the Bardon, Windsor, Hamilton and Stafford) cover hinged-door configurations on the F05 / F54 ANSI bodies and the dormakaba MS2602. Sliding doors are rarely fire doors, but if yours is, see Chapter 05, fire-door compliance and the fire door category before specifying anything.
It meets ANSI / BHMA standards for more than 500,000 cycle tests and passed BHMA Level 2 and Level 3, which is comfortably above domestic duty, and McGrath positions it for residential and light-commercial doors. On a sliding panel the host lock and the door itself usually set the limit before the mortice does - the A231 is a slimline lock made for residential and light-commercial doors. Chapter 11 explains how the grading systems relate; for a heavy commercial hinged door McGrath's answer is the ANSI pair (which of the F05 and F54 to choose).
The case and hook bolt are SS304 stainless steel, which is the right material for a body buried in an aluminium door near salt air - but McGrath quotes no salt spray test hours for the mortice body and we will not invent a figure. The exposed parts of the installation are the smart lock furniture and the faceplate edge; check the finish rating on the host lock's page rather than the mortice.
Yes - the Lockton E-Series sliding-door mortice body at 35mm (SML-S35) is catalogued as interchangeable with this body, and it is the mortice under the Lockton ELEV36 sliding-door lock. Lockton also lists sliding bodies at 20mm and 45mm that McGrath does not make. The dormakaba MS2602 is a hinged-door commercial body and not an answer for a slider.
