The McGrath Euro 85 Series is the swing-door mortice body behind the McGrath A210, A231 and A236 slimline smart locks and the NX5. This is the 70mm backset body - the deepest backset in the Euro 85 range. It is a mechanical lock body only - a latch and a deadbolt in a 1.5mm SS304 stainless steel case, driven by an 8mm square spindle and a Euro profile cylinder. There are no electronics, no batteries and no app in this listing; the smart lock furniture sits over it and does the thinking.
Every body in the Euro 85 Series shares the same 85mm pitch (the spindle-to-cylinder centre distance), the same 8mm spindle hub and the same 240 x 22mm faceplate. Only the backset - and therefore the case depth - changes. The 70mm body has a case depth of 86.5mm. The other backsets are on their own listings: the 28 to 50mm multi-backset listing and the 60mm body (MLEM6085SS).

Compatible McGrath Smart Locks
The Euro 85 swing body is the mortice McGrath specifies for its 85mm-pitch smart locks. It fits these four models - each link opens the host lock's own page, and the accessories sections on those pages come straight back here.
Not for the NX1, Albion, NX6 or NX6W - those locks take the 60/50 spindle mortice (NX1, Albion) or the Euro 60/68 three-point body (NX6, NX6W). The five McGrath mortice families are compared in our range guide.

- Timber and aluminium hinged (swing) doors fitted with a McGrath A210, A231, A236 or NX5 - the door type compatibility matrix in Chapter 04 shows where each lock belongs.

Sliding or bifold doors - a straight deadbolt cannot hold a sliding panel. Use the 28mm or 35mm Euro 85 hook body with the A231 sliding-door lock, or browse sliding-door smart locks. Fire doors - no fire rating is published for any Euro 85 body, and none of the four host locks is fire assessed on it. Measure from the door edge to the centre of the existing spindle or cylinder hole - our backset guide shows exactly where to put the tape. If it reads 70mm, this is the body. If it reads 28 to 50mm you want the 28 to 50mm multi-backset listing, and 60mm is the 60mm body (MLEM6085SS). A body with the wrong backset will not line the spindle up with the smart lock furniture.
No. The body has the Euro profile aperture but ships without a cylinder. Order the McGrath cylinder that matches your lock - listed in Accessories and Spares - or reuse the cylinder already in your existing body. The cylinder is the mechanical key override for the smart lock, which is why it is keyed to the lock model rather than to the mortice.
It suits the A210, the hinged-door A231, the A236 and the NX5 - all 85mm-pitch locks. It does not suit the NX1 or Albion (they use the 60/50 spindle mortice), the NX6 or NX6W (they use the Euro 60/68 three-point body) or any sliding door (use the hook body). Close the door and lift the lever - the deadbolt throws and the door is deadlocked. To come back in, unlock the smart lock with your PIN, fingerprint, card or app and press the lever down; the lever retracts the latch and the deadbolt together. You do not need to turn a key to deadlock or to unlock. No - the latch is reversible, so one body suits either hand. Reverse the latch before you fit the body so the bevel faces the strike. If you are not sure which way your door swings, this is how to determine door handing.
Additional Information
- Pitch is fixed, backset is not. Every Euro 85 body has 85mm between the spindle and cylinder centres because the McGrath furniture is drilled for 85mm. Choosing a body by pitch alone is the classic mistake - a Euro body from another brand at 85mm pitch may still have a different faceplate or backset. Chapter 02 covers the whole mortice lever and long-plate mortice measuring routine, and why backset is less forgiving on a smart lock.
- Lockton equivalent. The Lockton E-Series Euro smart mortice bodies share the 85mm pitch and 240 x 22mm faceplate and are catalogued as interchangeable with the McGrath Euro 85 swing bodies - the matching listing is the Lockton SML-H70. - Not fire rated, and not a substitute for an approved fire configuration. Where a McGrath lock is used on a fire door, the assessments name the ANSI F05 / F54 bodies and the dormakaba MS2602 - a mortice that merely shares a 60mm backset is not an approved combination. - Strike alignment decides how well the deadbolt throws. A strike plate a couple of millimetres off will bind the deadbolt on a lever-lift body - it is the first of the three common installation mistakes we see. Choosing the Right Body
Backset is the distance from the door edge to the centre of the spindle - dimension B on our drawing, and explained from scratch here. Aluminium stiles are narrow, so the A210, A231 and A236 need bodies as short as 28mm; timber doors are commonly prepared at 45, 50, 60 or 70mm. McGrath makes the same body at all seven so the furniture never changes - only the case depth does (seven backsets, one pitch). Australian standard backset sizes are covered in the backset blog.
Four steps: count the bolts (a latch plus a single straight deadbolt is the Euro 85 swing pattern), check for a keyhole (a Euro 85 has a cylinder aperture; the 60/50 does not), measure the backset and measure the faceplate - 240 x 22mm on every Euro 85 swing body, 270mm on the hook bodies, 255 x 24mm on the 60/68. No. The 60/50 spindle mortice is a keyless body with a 147mm or 180mm faceplate and no cylinder aperture; the NX5's key override is in its own escutcheon. The Euro 85 body is a 240mm-faceplate Euro profile body that takes a cylinder in the mortice. Both suit the NX5, but they are prepared differently and are not interchangeable in the door - why there is no keyhole on the 60/50 explains the difference, and the NX5 mortice options section sets out which comes in the box.
Backsets are nominal; a millimetre or two of slop in an old preparation is normal and the 22mm faceplate covers a slightly oversized mortice slot. If you are 5mm or more out, you are almost certainly looking at the next size - see the standard sizes and what a wrong backset does. Cylinders, Keys and the Mechanical Override
A Euro profile fixed-cam cylinder. McGrath keys its cylinders to the host lock, so choose by the lock on the door: A210, A210 / A236, A231 or NX5 keyed-to-differ cylinders, or the A210 / A236 and A231 keyed-alike cylinders for multi-door sites. On the outside escutcheon of the smart lock, 85mm below the spindle - the cylinder sits inside this mortice and the escutcheon has a matching opening. That is the whole reason the pitch must be 85mm: it is the distance from the handle spindle to the keyhole. Our blog on mechanical key override shows where to look on each McGrath model. Yes - McGrath key blanks are model-specific: A210, A231, A236 and NX5 blanks are in the keys and key blanks category. Keyed-alike cylinders let one key open several doors on a site.
Fitting and Operation
The latch bolt on the Euro 85 body is reversible so the bevel faces the strike on either a left- or right-hand door. Establish the handing first - this step-by-step settles it - then reverse the latch before the body goes into the door. Fitting it the wrong way round leaves the latch riding over the strike instead of into it.
It throws the deadbolt. The latch alone holds the door closed; lifting the lever after closing extends the deadbolt into the strike and deadlocks the door. Once the smart lock is unlocked, pressing the lever down retracts the latch and the deadbolt together. The mechanism and its bolt travel are described in lift the lever to throw the deadbolt and in deadbolt projection.
Set the strike so the deadbolt has clear travel - the lever-lift throw will bind or refuse to fully extend on a strike that is even slightly high. That is installation mistake number one in our troubleshooting blog. The Euro 85 sheet names a strike plate and a strike plate pocket as the accessory set; for rebated double doors check the rebate kits and strikes category. Suitability and Limitations
No. A straight deadbolt has nothing to hook onto on a sliding panel. Use the 28mm or 35mm Euro 85 hook body - same pitch, same furniture, 270mm faceplate - with the A231 sliding-door lock. No. No fire rating is published for any Euro 85 body, and the four host locks are not fire assessed on it. McGrath's fire assessments (Jensen Hughes, for the Bardon, Windsor, Hamilton and Stafford) name the F05 / F54 ANSI bodies and the dormakaba MS2602 - and on the F54 the deadbolt must be made inoperable. A body that happens to share a backset is not an approved combination. See Chapter 05, fire-door compliance and the fire door category.
It is cycle tested beyond 500,000 operations and passed BHMA Level 2 and Level 3, which is comfortably above domestic duty, and McGrath positions it for domestic and light-commercial doors. For a high-traffic commercial entrance McGrath's own answer is the ANSI pair - which of the F05 and F54 to choose is in our blog and Chapter 11 covers grading. Where the hosts are the slimline A210 / A231 / A236, the door itself is usually the limit before the mortice is.
Yes - the Lockton E-Series Euro smart mortice bodies share the 85mm pitch and 240 x 22mm faceplate and are catalogued as interchangeable with the McGrath swing bodies: the matching listing is the Lockton SML-H70. The dormakaba MS2602 is a different animal - a commercial primary mortice at 60mm backset, named in the McGrath fire assessments, but matching dimensions is not the same as approved compatibility. - Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries (the place of purchase) within the applicable warranty period.
- Supply your proof of original purchase - a receipt or tax invoice is required.

- You may be asked to return the product for assessment before a remedy is determined.
