The McGrath SJ8015 is a compact 4-in-1 digital lever lock built for standard stile timber and aluminium hinged doors in homes, home offices and light commercial premises. Its small escutcheon (154mm high by 68mm wide) makes it one of the more discreet smart locks in the McGrath range, and it ships with an adjustable tubular latch already set up for the two backsets found on most Australian doors.
Day-to-day access runs through the McGrath Locks App over Bluetooth, with PIN codes, RFID cards, fobs and wristbands, Bluetooth eKeys and a mechanical key override all supported out of the box. The SJ8015 has no Wi-Fi radio of its own. Everything it does day to day - PINs, cards, eKeys, the key override - works offline over Bluetooth, and a lot of owners never need more than that. Remote features arrive when you pair the lock with a McGrath gateway: unlocking the door from anywhere, issuing or revoking a code without being on site, and seeing the access log update in real time rather than the next time your phone is in range.
Three gateways suit this lock. The G3 runs on Power over Ethernet with no Wi-Fi at all, which is the right answer in a managed commercial network. The G4 adds a 4G SIM as a fallback for holiday houses and anywhere the internet is unreliable. The G5 is dual-band, which sidesteps the band-steering problem that causes most of the dropouts we get called about - see Chapter 08 - Band Steering and Why Smart Locks Drop Off Wi-Fi before you buy.
With a gateway fitted the lock also answers to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Battery, Power & Backup Access
- Runs on 4 x AA alkaline batteries at DC 6V. The installation guide is explicit that only AA cells are used, and that old and new batteries, or batteries from different brands, must not be mixed.
- Up to 12 months of normal use, which McGrath puts at roughly 10,000 operations. Draw is 30 microamps at rest and under 200 milliamps while the motor runs.
- Low-battery warning at the lock and in the McGrath Locks App, well before it stops working. Batteries do not fail without notice on this platform - see Chapter 13 - Power and Battery.
- Micro-USB backup power interface on the external housing. If the batteries are flat you can hold a USB power bank against it, unlock normally, and fit new cells from the inside.
- Mechanical key override works in any power state at all. Two keys are supplied - keep one off site, and read Mechanical Key Override on Smart Locks on where to store it. A key safe beats under the mat.
- Terry's recommends quality alkaline cells and replacing all four together. Cheap cells leak, and battery leakage is not covered by the McGrath warranty.

Suitable Uses
- Front and back doors on a standard stile - timber or aluminium, 38mm to 50mm thick, on a stile of at least 110mm. This is the everyday case, and it is what the Regular Front Door range is built around.
- Internal offices, studies, store rooms and consulting rooms where you want keyless entry without a deadbolt. See Internal Doors.
- Short-stay and holiday rentals. The TTLock platform issues time-limited and one-time codes that expire on their own - no key handover, no lockbox. Read Chapter 07 - Airbnb and Short-Stay and what TTLock can do without Wi-Fi before committing.
- Retrofits onto an existing 60mm or 70mm door preparation. If the door already takes a standard entrance set, the SJ8015 usually goes straight in. Chapter 04 - Compatibility Matrix is the fastest check.
- Sheltered outdoor doorways - a porch, patio, carport entry or covered walkway. Both housings are IP65, which is a genuinely better position than most locks in this class, but it is not a licence for full exposure.
- Gates, with a weld-on lock box. McGrath supplies galvanised alloy and stainless steel boxes for this, welded to the gate frame. Check the stile first - Gate Post Too Narrow for a 60mm Latch? covers the trap.
- Small offices, clinics and workshops managing a handful of staff on cards rather than keys. With 150 codes and 100 cards it comfortably covers a team of that size, and every entry is logged.
Weather Rating - IP65 On Both Sides
Unusually for this class, McGrath rates both the external and the internal housing at IP65 - dust tight, and protected against water jets from any direction. Most two-part smart locks rate only the outside module. That said, IP65 is a splash and hose rating, not an immersion or driving-rain rating: a porch, patio or covered entry is ideal, a west-facing door that takes horizontal rain in a storm is not. Where the SJ8015 Is Not The Answer
- Narrow stile aluminium doors under 110mm - look at the McGrath A210 or A231 in the narrow frame range instead.
- Sliding and security screen doors - different format entirely. See glass sliding doors and security screen doors.
- Doors thinner than 38mm or thicker than 50mm - the through-bolts and spindle will not make up the difference.
- Where a DDA compliant lever is specified - the SJ8015 lever is not AS 1428.1 compliant. See DDA smart locks for NDIS housing.
- Fully exposed positions - driving rain, unsheltered gates facing the weather, or direct afternoon sun all day. Heat is a bigger killer than water: why sunlight shortens a lock's life.

The SJ8015 drives a spring latch through its lever. It holds the door shut and it stops the handle turning from outside, but it does not throw a solid bolt into the frame the way a deadbolt does. For most internal doors, offices and sheltered entries that is exactly right. For a front door where kick-in resistance is the concern, a deadbolt gives you more - the McGrath X3 is the deadbolt on this same 60/70mm platform, and plenty of homes run both. There is a protective film on the touch panel from the factory - peel it off when you are done installing if you want to, or leave it. Use quality alkaline cells and change all four together; leaking cheap batteries are a common cause of failure and are excluded from warranty. What is the minimum stile width?
110mm. That is the vertical section of door or frame the lock body sits in, and it is the measurement most people forget. Aluminium doors are where it bites - a lot of them run narrower than that. Two things to know before you open the bag. Batteries are not included - you need four AA alkaline cells. And sleeve bolt F is optional: it only goes in if your door has a hole prepared for it, so a leftover part is not a mistake. McGrath says so at step 3 of the installation sequence. Also not in the box: RFID cards, fobs and wristbands, and the gateway for remote access.

How to Make a Claim

- Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries (the place of purchase) within the applicable warranty period.
- Supply your proof of original purchase - a receipt or tax invoice is required.
- Provide a clear description of the fault and your contact details.
- You may be asked to return the product for assessment before a remedy is determined.
- McGrath Locks will, at their discretion, repair the product, replace it with the same or an equivalent model, or provide a refund of the purchase price.
Exclusions
This warranty does not cover:
- Normal wear and tear
- Products that have been disassembled
- Damage caused by improper handling, incorrect installation, misuse, abuse, neglect, modification, or accident
- Installation by unlicensed persons (including non-licensed locksmiths or technicians)
- Products not used in accordance with the supplied instructions
- Cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality
- Labour or installation costs related to the removal or reinstallation of products
- Exposure to conditions outside normal environmental use
- Work completed before warranty approval
- Damage caused by battery leakage, battery failure, or force majeure
Australian Consumer Law
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if they fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.
