BDS Mortice Magnetic Gate Latch Body to suit Euro Cylinder Only (Trencab)
The BDS TML25E is a mortice magnetic gate latch body for keyed gate access. It is operated by a euro cylinder, suits a Brava fixed cam euro cylinder, and fits into either the gate leaf or the gate post. Trencab makes it in Australia, and we list it in our BDS range. It suits metal or timber gates, internal or external, in domestic and light commercial use.
Latches like this are used on narrow gate stiles, and it is worth understanding how a mortice magnetic latch works before you choose one. A gate stop must be used with this latch, but a stop cannot prevent the gate or the post from moving, and even slight movement can put the pin out of line so it no longer throws into the strike. About half of the magnetic latches we have installed needed a return visit to realign. That is why we now strongly prefer the 28mm latch from Borg on keypad gates and rarely fit a TML25.

Yes. A gate stop must be used with the TML25E. Fit one, but do not rely on it to keep the latch in line: a stop is required but it is not a fix for a gate or post that moves, and movement is the main problem with magnetic latches.

If you are starting from scratch on a narrow gate, the Borg locks with a 28mm mortice latch, such as the BL2002SC, BL2202SC and BL2702SCECP, are the route we prefer. Additional Information
- Alignment decides whether it latches: the pin only throws when the latch body and the magnetic strike line up, and once a magnetic latch falls out of line it stops catching. On doors too, misalignment left unaddressed is one of the most common installation mistakes.
- Gates move over time: sagging, hinges, ground movement and wind all shift a gate, so a latch that lines up on the day it is fitted may not stay that way.
- The latch we reach for instead: on keypad gates we prefer the 28mm latch from Borg, sold on its own for the Borg 2000 series as the BLS272000LH (left hand) and BLS272000RH (right hand), because around half of our magnetic latch installs needed a return visit. The 28mm latch is handed, so check handing before you order.
- Stile or post: the stile is part of the gate and the post is the fixed upright it closes against. The latch body can go in either, so check which is the stile and which is the post, measure the one you are fitting to, and work through what to measure before you order.
- Professional fitting: morticing a latch body into a gate or post and lining it up with the strike is precise work. Check when do-it-yourself (DIY) fitting is appropriate, and when it is not, or ask us about advice and installation.

Choosing a Magnetic Gate Latch
A latch body goes into the gate or the post, and a magnet in the strike throws a pin from the latch body into the strike when the two line up. On the TML25E a euro cylinder operates the latch, for keyed gate access. It is a different product from a top-pull magnetic pool safety latch, even though both get called magnetic gate latches.
Because gates move. Gate movement is the main problem: even slight movement of the gate or post can put the pin out of line so it fails to throw into the strike, and once it falls out of line it stops latching. In our own work, about half of magnetic latch installations needed a return visit to realign.
Sometimes, though in our experience those gates are the exception. We explain when we would still use one and when you should be cautious, and the other gate factors to consider help you weigh a magnetic latch against the alternatives.
Besides a magnetic latch, narrow stile gates can take the Borg 28mm short backset latch, which we prefer, a forend fixing gate lock that clamps onto the stile, a prefabricated mounting box or a workshop solution. What Fits What sets the options side by side, so you can match one to your frame.
Fitting and Alignment
Either. The latch body can be fitted into the gate leaf or the gate post, so measure the part you are fitting it to. Our guide to stile versus post explains which is which.
Measure the stile or post you are fitting to and compare it with the face plate, latch body and strike sizes in Full Specifications. Check the backset suits the frame (see what backset is and the backset section of our Measuring Your Door chapter), then run through what to measure before you order. Plan where the gate stop will go too, because one must be used.
Gates move over time through sagging, hinges, ground movement and wind. A gate stop must be used with the TML25E, but a stop cannot stop the gate or the post moving, so it will not keep a magnetic latch in line on its own.

Check alignment first. Slight movement of the gate or post is enough to put the pin out of line with the strike, and realigning it is what our return visits to magnetic latches were for. Choose by how the gate will be opened. The TML25E is operated by a euro cylinder for keyed access and suits a Brava fixed cam euro cylinder. The TML25DGT is the same 25mm latch body family made to suit Borg 2000 and 4000 series mechanical digital keypads. Both are magnetic latches, so the same alignment advice applies to each. We prefer the 28mm latch from Borg, which takes the short backset route. The BL2002SC, BL2202SC and BL2702SCECP each have a 28mm mortice latch (the BL2702SCECP adds a key override), and the latch is sold on its own for the Borg 2000 series as the BLS272000LH and BLS272000RH, so handing matters. The BL3400GATE and BL3430GATE are forend fixing gate locks that clamp onto the stile, another option for narrow stiles.
