The McGrath NX6W is a full-size 5-in-1 digital smart lock for standard-stile timber and aluminium hinged doors in homes, offices and light commercial premises. It is the built-in Wi-Fi member of the McGrath Locks range: the lock joins your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network directly, so remote locking, unlocking, user management and notifications work through the McGrath Locks App with no separate gateway to buy. Its 370 mm lock body is deliberately large - on a retrofit it covers the oversized cutouts and stray holes that earlier hardware leaves behind, which is why it is one of the front-door smart locks we fit most often on older doors.
Five ways in: PIN code, RFID card or tag, fingerprint, Bluetooth eKey through the McGrath Locks App, and a mechanical key override - with Wi-Fi remote access on top. A McGrath Euro 60/68 mortice lock ships in the box: a 1.5 mm SS304 stainless three-point deadbolt body with an anti-friction dead latch, a manual privacy bolt (turnsnib) on the inside, and a 500,000-cycle test behind it. How a mortice deadbolt differs from the tubular latch on most retrofit smart locks is covered in Chapter 01. The external housing is IP65 rated for a sheltered outdoor position; the internal unit that carries the batteries is for indoor use only and is not weather rated.

A small number of NX6W locks have shown rapid battery drain. The cause is the built-in Wi-Fi radio, which polls the network roughly every five minutes to stay connected, and that constant polling can flatten the eight AA cells far sooner than the 18-month figure. We have sold dozens of these locks and only a handful have been affected, but we would rather tell you than leave it unsaid. Wi-Fi is built into the NX6W, so remote access, activity notifications and app control all run over your own 2.4 GHz network with nothing extra to add. There is no separate Wi-Fi gateway (bridge) to buy, power or find a spot for - the hardware cost and the extra setup step a Bluetooth-only lock needs for remote access are gone. The McGrath NX6 is the same lock, mortice and app - it simply runs on Bluetooth at the door and adds remote access through a separate G2, G3, G4 or G5 gateway when you want it. It costs less, and the gateway route is the one we recommend for the most dependable battery life. Compare the four McGrath gateways if you go that way.

- Residential front doors, timber and aluminium: standard-stile hinged doors from 38 mm to 110 mm thick, which takes in almost every Australian entry door - check yours against the door-type compatibility matrix and browse the regular front door range. Aluminium doors need a stile wide enough for the mortice case - measure the stile width first.

- Strata and apartment entry doors that are not fire doors: run the four strata checks first. NX Series - Where the NX6W Sits in the McGrath Standard-Stile Range
The NX6W and the NX6 share the same body, mortice, credentials and app; the only functional difference is how remote access is achieved. The NX5 and NX1 are the other standard-stile 5-in-1 McGrath locks and use different mortice or latch formats. McGrath's whole range is profiled in Chapter 10.

A Wi-Fi gateway is not an accessory for this model - the Wi-Fi is already inside. If you later decide you would rather run the lock on Bluetooth plus a mains-powered gateway for battery life, that is a conversation about swapping to the NX6, not an add-on. McGrath NX6W - Technical Specifications
IP rating note: the IP65 rating applies to the external lock housing only. The internal unit, which houses the batteries and electronics, is not IP rated and must not be exposed to water. Install where the internal unit is protected from rain ingress - if the door faces the weather with no cover, read Queensland climate considerations first.

Two drawings matter here: the lock body that sits on the door face, and the mortice that goes into the door edge. The mortice is the one that decides fit - its 60 mm backset and 68 mm centres are fixed, so confirm your existing prep against the standard Australian backset sizes and read how mortice door prep differs from a bored cylindrical prep.

Battery, Power and Backup Access
- Powered by 8 x AA alkaline batteries (not included). Terry's strongly recommends Duracell - the TTLock guide explains which batteries to use and which to avoid. Do not fit rechargeable cells; their lower voltage trips the low-battery warning early.
- McGrath rates battery life at up to 18 months at about ten uses a day. The built-in Wi-Fi radio is the biggest single draw, and a small number of units have drained far faster - see the known-fault note at the top of the page and what really governs battery life.
- Battery voltage 6 V. The low-battery alert triggers below 4.6 V with an audible warning at the lock and a notification in the app; a misaligned door that makes the motor strain is the other common cause of early warnings - Chapter 12 explains.
- USB-C emergency power - if the batteries are flat, hold any USB-C power bank to the port on the base of the exterior unit and the keypad wakes long enough to enter a code or scan a fingerprint. Chapter 01 covers how smart locks are powered and what a mains power outage does and does not affect (nothing - the lock is battery powered).
- Mechanical key override through the Euro cylinder works with no power at all. Keep one key off the property - read where to store the override key.
- The battery cover is held by security screws; the mini screwdriver is in the box, and a magnetic-tip Torx driver is stocked for when it walks off. More on power and battery questions in Chapter 13.

No. Wi-Fi is built into the NX6W, so it joins your 2.4 GHz network directly and you can lock, unlock and manage users from anywhere in the McGrath Locks App with no extra hardware. The standard NX6 is the one that needs a gateway. If you are weighing the two, do you actually need a gateway? is the honest read, and the battery-drain note above explains why we still often recommend the gateway route.
No. PIN, RFID, fingerprint, Bluetooth and the key all work at the door with no internet at all; only remote control and live notifications pause until the connection returns. This is the same behaviour as every TTLock lock when the internet goes down. If the lock keeps dropping off Wi-Fi, the usual culprit is a router that merges its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands - the real fixes are simple.
The supplied mortice has a manual turnsnib on the inside. Turn it and the bolt holds the door against every outside credential - PIN, card, fingerprint, app - until someone inside releases it. It is a mechanical do-not-disturb, not an app setting, which is why it suits guest rooms. It also means a guest can lock a cleaner or a host out, so read what an internal snib disables and the best-practice rules before a short-stay install.
Fresh Duracell AAs that need replacing in a matter of weeks rather than a year, with normal daily use, is the sign - the low-battery diagnostic rules out the ordinary causes first (door misalignment, cheap cells, a code entered dozens of times a day). If it is the Wi-Fi radio, talk to Terry's; the fix we recommend is the NX6 with a mains-powered G5 gateway, which keeps every remote feature and returns the lock to normal battery life. Warranty claims on an affected unit are handled by Terry's under the McGrath warranty.
Three checks. The door must be 38 mm to 110 mm thick. The mortice needs a 60 mm backset with 68 mm centres - if your existing mortice is 85 mm pitch or a 70 mm backset, this is the wrong lock and the NX5 may be right. And on an aluminium door the stile must accept a 95 mm-wide case, so measure the stile width; narrow stiles want the slimline A210 or A231 instead. Additional Information
- Retrofit coverage - measure before you order. The 370 mm x 75 mm body is deliberately larger than most residential digital locks so it hides the prep left by earlier hardware. If your door has visible holes or a longplate shadow, measure their spread against the body and the mortice drawing; where the old marks fall outside the body, a scar plate from the scar and adaptor plate range closes the gap.
- Security screen door clearance. The outside handle projects 72 mm - further than a standard lever. If a hinged security screen sits in front of the door, check the gap between the two before ordering so the lever does not foul the screen frame; how to measure the clearance and the mistake we see most are both short reads.
- Handing is set with batteries in. Left- or right-hand operation is configured during installation and the lock uses its motor to set the latch direction, so fit the batteries before handing the lock and lay the drill template out for the chosen hand before drilling. If you are unsure which hand your door is, what happens when handing is wrong is worth two minutes.
- Installation. A drill template and manual are supplied and a competent DIYer can fit this lock, but a mortice with three deadbolts is unforgiving of a strike that is a few millimetres out - misalignment is the leading cause of new-lock faults and early battery drain. - Not a fire door lock. The NX6W carries no fire test and must not be fitted to a tagged fire door - in a strata building that includes most apartment entry doors. Use the Lockton Cadell52 for a 60 mm mortice fire door, or the McGrath Windsor, Hamilton, Stafford or Bardon on a latch or ANSI mortice door. Remote Access and Wi-Fi
Same lock, same mortice, same credentials, same McGrath Locks App - the difference is where the Wi-Fi radio lives. On the NX6W it is inside the lock and runs on the lock's batteries; on the NX6 it lives in a plug-in G2, G3, G4 or G5 gateway on mains power that talks to the lock over Bluetooth. Built-in Wi-Fi saves you the gateway, a power point and a setup step; the gateway saves your batteries and, with the G5, gives you 5 GHz. Chapter 14 tabulates what changes when a gateway is added, and Chapter 08 covers choosing the right one.
Probably, but this is the number-one setup snag. The lock needs a 2.4 GHz network; most modern routers merge 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name and steer devices between them, and a lock that lands on 5 GHz during pairing will fail. Split the bands temporarily, stand your phone near the lock on the 2.4 GHz network while pairing, then merge again. Wherever your phone gets a solid 2.4 GHz signal at the door, the lock will too - 2.4 GHz carries further through brick and timber than 5 GHz, which is one reason it is the band smart locks use. If the front door is a dead spot, a mesh node or extender broadcasting 2.4 GHz near the entry fixes it; there is no gateway to reposition on this model. Compare that with the gateway placement rules an NX6 owner has to follow.
Yes - remove the Wi-Fi configuration in the app and the lock behaves exactly like an NX6 without a gateway: every credential works at the door, eKeys and codes are issued over Bluetooth when you are in range, and remote features pause. It is a legitimate way to stretch battery life on a lock that has shown the drain fault, and you can add a G5 gateway later to get remote back on mains power. A Bluetooth-only lock does need its clock checked occasionally - see clock calibration and the symptoms of clock drift.
Not directly. The McGrath Locks App is a TTLock-platform app and does not expose the lock to Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa; McGrath does not claim voice control for the NX6W and we do not either. If native smart-home integration is the priority, the Yale Home and Lockwood Home ecosystem is where that lives - Chapter 15's scenario-to-platform table and Chapter 14's honest list of what TTLock does not do lay it out.
Access and Credentials
Six: permanent, time-limited (one hour to three years), one-time (valid six hours), cyclic (the same code every Tuesday morning for the cleaner, say), customised (you choose the digits and the window) and an erase code that wipes every code on the lock. Time-limited and cyclic codes must be activated at the lock within their window on a Bluetooth-only install; with Wi-Fi built in the NX6W pushes them straight to the lock. The platform manual documents each type from page 24.
Type any digits you like before and after your real code - up to the keypad's limit - and the lock still opens, because it looks for the correct sequence anywhere in what you typed. Someone watching over your shoulder or reading fingerprint smudges on the glass learns nothing useful. After repeated wrong attempts the keypad locks out for a period, which is also why a forgotten code is best fixed from the app rather than by guessing. The fundamentals are in Chapter 03's PIN section.
Almost never. Wet, sweaty, sunscreen-coated or very dry fingers read badly on every optical or capacitive sensor, and so does a finger enrolled at one angle and presented at another. Enrol each finger from three angles as the app prompts, add a second finger on each hand, and wipe the sensor in the lever occasionally. The reader is 13.56 MHz and takes MIFARE Classic 1K credentials - the two tags in the box are that type, and so are the McGrath fobs, ISO cards, wristbands and adhesive stickers we stock. Each credential is enrolled at the lock through the app with permanent or timed validity and can be deleted individually, so a lost fob costs you one entry, not a rekey. A bank card or a Go Card will not enrol. Chapter 03 explains why MIFARE is the standard; the manual covers card management on page 32; browse the whole card and fob access range.
An eKey is app access: the person installs the McGrath Locks App, you send them an eKey from yours, and their phone unlocks the door over Bluetooth (or remotely, if you grant it). Like codes, eKeys can be permanent, timed or one-time, and unlimited of them can exist. The practical difference is that an eKey needs the guest to install an app and log in, so for a two-night stay a code is usually kinder; for a family member or a manager, an eKey with admin rights is more useful. Chapter 14 covers eKeys and the manual shows the three eKey types.
Yes, on the mechanical side. Fit a keyed-alike NX6 cylinder to each NX6 or NX6W and one override key opens them all; the keyed-to-differ cylinder is the opposite - a unique key for one lock. Spare keys are cut from the NX6 key blank by any locksmith. Keying alike across different McGrath models (an NX6W on the front and an Albion on the garage side door, say) depends on the cylinder each model takes - ask us. On the digital side, of course, one app already runs every McGrath lock you own.
Locking, Privacy and Safety
No, and this surprises some buyers. When you close the door the anti-friction dead latch holds it shut and the lock is secure against the handle. To throw the three deadbolts you lift the inside lever upward (lift-to-lock), the same way a multipoint lock on an aluminium door works. From outside, any credential retracts both the latch and the bolts in one motion. Lifting the bolts every time you go out is good habit on a front door; Chapter 01 explains the mortice deadbolt format and our blog covers why bolt throw matters.
Yes. The inside lever retracts the latch and the bolts in one motion regardless of the lock state, and the privacy turnsnib only ever locks people out, never in. That single-action egress is what makes a mortice smart lock acceptable on a residential entry door; on a tagged fire door the question is different and the NX6W is not the answer - see the Lockton Cadell52 and Chapter 05.
No. The turnsnib is a mechanical bolt inside the mortice; the app has no motor on it. That is the point in a motel room and the risk in a short-stay rental - a guest who leaves with it thrown locks your cleaner out until a locksmith attends. Leave it switched off. That toggle is a generic TTLock platform setting; McGrath locks do not carry the vibration hardware behind it, so on an NX6W it only ever produces phantom alerts. Yes. Every unlock is recorded against the credential that made it - which code, which fingerprint, which card, which eKey - with a timestamp, and with Wi-Fi built in those records reach your app in near real time rather than waiting for a phone to walk past the lock. The manual describes searching lock records; Chapter 07 explains how audit trails settle disputes; and if you run staff, Chapter 14's attendance management turns the same records into a timesheet at no extra cost.
Power and Batteries
Because a Wi-Fi radio is hungry. Four cells run a Bluetooth lock for a year; the NX6W doubles the pack to feed the radio that polls your network to stay reachable from outside. That is also why the drain fault shows up as it does - if the radio polls more than it should, twice the batteries still drain fast. Hold any USB-C power bank to the port on the underside of the exterior unit. The keypad and reader wake on the power bank's supply, you enter your code or scan a finger, and you are in - then change the batteries. No. The lock runs on its own batteries and your credentials work at the door. What a blackout does take down is your router, so remote access and notifications pause until power and internet return - the same as any connected lock, explained in power outages and smart locks and Chapter 08's when the internet goes down.
Door Fit and Installation
Not without new door prep. The supplied mortice is fixed at a 60 mm backset with 68 mm centres, and the lock body's spindle and cylinder holes line up with that mortice only. A 60 mm backset door with a different pitch can sometimes be re-mortised by a locksmith; a 70 mm backset door is better served by a McGrath model that matches - the NX5 takes an 85 mm pitch Euro mortice, and the NX1 takes a tubular latch. Measure with our backset guide and note what happens with the wrong backset.
A standard-stile aluminium door, yes - the datasheet lists timber and aluminium and the 38 to 110 mm thickness range takes in any residential aluminium leaf. The catch is stile width: the mortice case is 95 mm wide, so a slimline aluminium frame will not accept it. Chapter 02's stile width guide gives the numbers; if yours is narrow, the slim-line range - the McGrath A210, A231 and A236 - is built for exactly that door.
If you have fitted a mortice lock before and own a router or a sharp chisel set, yes; the template and manual are good. If your door currently has a bored cylindrical prep (a round hole for a knob or lever), you are cutting a mortice pocket from scratch, and that is a locksmith job on any door you care about. The three faults we see on DIY installs are spindle position, wrong backset and strike misalignment; the quick self-check catches all three. Terry's installs across the Gold Coast.
Nine times in ten the strike or the mortice pocket is a few millimetres out and the bolts are rubbing. A mortice with three deadbolts has three places to bind, and every strained cycle costs battery. Loosen and re-seat the strike plate, check the door has not dropped on its hinges, and confirm the deadbolts clear their pockets with the door pulled firmly closed. No. The IP65 rating covers the external housing only, and the internal unit with the batteries has no weather rating at all - on a gate it would be outdoors on both faces. A sheltered porch or covered entry is the limit. For a gate the McGrath Ascot is the double-sided gate lock in the range, and the battery-free mechanical digital locks are the other honest answer - see Chapter 16 on gates. Short-Stay, Business and Multi-Property Use
Through the TTLock platform's TTRenting side and third-party property management systems, yes - codes are generated for each booking, pushed to the lock over its built-in Wi-Fi, and expire at checkout. What TTLock does not do is connect to Airbnb natively the way Igloohome's algoPIN does, and whether that matters depends on how many properties you run. Yes, provided their code was pushed to the lock before the outage - which, with built-in Wi-Fi, happens the moment you create it. A code sitting on the lock validates locally; the lock does not phone home to check it. What a dead connection stops is creating or cancelling codes mid-stay, so on a rental, create the next guest's code the day you confirm the booking. Chapter 07's Wi-Fi drops mid-stay scenario and TTLock without Wi-Fi spell it out; how TTLock automation copes without Wi-Fi is the operational detail.
Switch it on from the app (or at the keypad) and the latch stays retracted so the door swings free for trading hours; switch it off at close and the lock secures on the next shut. The deadbolts stay retracted in passage mode - they are for after hours. For a business door that stays open all day this is more convenient than a code per staff member, and the attendance feature still records who came through by credential. Transfer it from the app, do not just delete it. The administrator account owns the lock; use Transfer Lock to move it to the buyer's McGrath Locks App account and every code, card and fingerprint stays intact for them to prune. If you delete the lock without a Bluetooth reset at the door, the next owner cannot add it. App, Data and Support
Same platform, McGrath skin. The McGrath Locks App is a branded build of TTLock, so the passcode types, eKeys, gateways and records are identical to the generic app, and the generic TTLock manual applies. The difference is who answers the phone: the McGrath build is supported in Australia by McGrath Locks and LSC rather than by an overseas developer. The McGrath Locks App is managed and supported in Australia; the cloud infrastructure underneath it is TTLock's global platform. TTLock has had vulnerabilities published and patched - six CVEs across five classes, all requiring Bluetooth proximity to the lock - and we would rather you read the disclosure than a sales line: Chapter 14's security section is the canonical account. If you want fingerprint and a mortice on a standard-stile door, the NX6W and NX6 are it; the NX5 suits an 85 mm pitch mortice door. If you do not need fingerprint, the Albion is the value standard-stile option on a tubular latch. For a deadbolt-only retrofit above an existing lever, the Kedron (fingerprint) and Ashgrove (raised buttons) share the platform. Fire doors go to the Hamilton or Windsor. How to Make a Claim
- Contact Terry's Tradies Pty Ltd and its associated websites, trading names, and subsidiaries (the place of purchase) within the applicable warranty period.
- Supply your proof of original purchase - a receipt or tax invoice is required.
- Provide a clear description of the fault and your contact details.
- You may be asked to return the product for assessment before a remedy is determined.
- McGrath Locks will, at their discretion, repair the product, replace it with the same or an equivalent model, or provide a refund of the purchase price.
Exclusions
This warranty does not cover:
- Normal wear and tear
- Products that have been disassembled
- Damage caused by improper handling, incorrect installation, misuse, abuse, neglect, modification, or accident
- Installation by unlicensed persons (including non-licensed locksmiths or technicians)
- Products not used in accordance with the supplied instructions
- Cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality
- Labour or installation costs related to the removal or reinstallation of products
- Exposure to conditions outside normal environmental use
- Work completed before warranty approval
- Damage caused by battery leakage, battery failure, or force majeure
Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if they fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure. The key pad does not immediately light up (or activate) when swiped prior to entering the code. At times this action may require 4 to 5 attempts to light up. *Phantom Alerts can occur at any time. The settings have been adjusted according to 'Fixing Phantom Tamper Alerts' and yet the random alerts still alarm - Maybe once a fortnight. Usually during the early hours. *Finger print function is also random. Access requires several attempts with the thumb print before the door allows entry. Often times we use the digital code. Its easier.
