ASSA ABLOY SMARTair i-max Standalone iCLASS Escutcheon - Standard Mortice DDA Handle with Key Override SNAB43SL2V648DI
Not Available
The ASSA ABLOY SMARTair i-max Standalone Electronic Escutcheon (SNAB43SL2V648DI) converts a conventional mortice lock door into a secure RFID credential-controlled access point. It combines a HID iCLASS contactless credential reader, a DDA compliant lever handle and a mechanical key override, in a battery powered escutcheon built for standard mortice lock installations.
SMARTair escutcheons require no wiring through the door or frame. They mount directly onto doors fitted with a compatible standard mortice lock body, so a traditionally keyed door can move to electronic access control with minimal installation work. The electronics and battery pack sit on the internal escutcheon, away from the weather and out of easy reach of tampering.
This is the Standalone tier of the SMARTair platform: users are added and removed with SMARTair programming cards at the door itself, with no software, network or app required to run the door day to day. The same hardware is upgradeable later to the managed SMARTair tiers. The wider platform - wall readers, electronic cylinders, padlocks and management software - is described in the SMARTair Wireless Access Control Product Overview and the SMARTair System Information Guide.
Typical applications include offices, meeting rooms, laboratories, education facilities and healthcare environments where credential-based door control is needed without wired access control infrastructure.
Usually ships in 3 business days (excludes weekends and Queensland public holidays).
Designed for professional access control installations including offices, universities, hospitals and commercial buildings. SMARTair devices deliver scalable security without door cabling.
Disability Compliance (DDA)
- DDA compliant lever handle design, stated by the manufacturer for the i-max DDA handle range.

Additional Information
Standalone Access Control Operation
This model operates as a standalone electronic escutcheon. Users and access permissions are programmed directly at the door using SMARTair programming cards - the red programming card adds or removes users, and the Shadow-card function means a lost card can be cancelled without re-issuing every credential on site. It suits individual secure doors or small installations where centralised access management is not required.
Standard Mortice Lock Compatibility
The SNAB43SL2V648DI is designed for doors fitted with standard mortice locks commonly used in commercial timber and steel door installations. The escutcheon controls the handle through an internal electromechanical clutch connected to the lock spindle. The matched Lockwood bodies are in the Mortice Options tab.
Mechanical Security Provided by the Lock Body
SMARTair escutcheons do not replace the mechanical mortice lock. The lock body continues to provide the primary mechanical security and latch mechanism while the escutcheon electronically controls handle operation - which is why the mortice lock body is ordered alongside the escutcheon, not included with it.
Ideal for Commercial Retrofit Projects
Because the electronics are contained within the escutcheon assembly and powered by internal batteries, SMARTair escutcheons are widely used to upgrade keyed doors to electronic access control without running cables through the door. Confirm the mortice fit with our backset measuring guide and the door type compatibility matrix.
Sibling Escutcheons and Upgrade Paths
This is the card-only (no keypad) Standalone model for standard mortice doors, fitted with a mechanical key override. If you need on-door PIN entry, choose the keypad version of this Standalone escutcheon; for narrow-stile mortice doors use the card-only Standalone escutcheon for narrow mortice. The same hardware upgrades to managed tiers: Update-on-Card plus Openow adds smartphone keys and card-based updates, and the Wireless Online plus Openow tier adds real-time monitoring via SMARTair hubs (each hub covers up to 30 doors within 30 m - see the gateway comparison chapter). The full range is in the Item Code Family table above.

Access and Credentials
The SNAB43SL2V648DI reads HID iCLASS 13.56 MHz RFID credentials - cards, tags and fobs. Credentials are ordered separately and encoded with the SMARTair USB encoder. The i-max platform also supports MIFARE, DESFire and SKIDATA technologies on other reader variants, so match the credential technology to the reader when mixing hardware on one site.
Not on this unit - the SNAB43SL2V648DI is the card-only reader. The keypad version of the same Standalone escutcheon adds on-door PIN entry with Card + PIN modes, and both fit the same standard mortice preparation.
A mechanical cylinder path into the door that works with flat batteries, lost credentials or electronics failure. The escutcheon ships with the key override preparation; the cylinder itself (a Lockwood oval cylinder) is supplied separately so it can be keyed to your site. Read more in our key override guide.
Programming and Management (Standalone Tier)
With SMARTair programming cards at the door: the red programming card puts the escutcheon into programming mode, and user credentials are presented to grant or revoke access. Larger standalone sites use the SMARTair portable programmer to configure doors and collect events faster.
Every user card can be paired with a shadow card kept in the office. If a card is lost, presenting its shadow card at the door cancels the lost card alone - no need to re-issue every credential on site.
Yes - the escutcheon stores approximately 1,200 events, which can be collected with the portable programmer. For live monitoring and alerts you would move the site to the Wireless Online tier.
Batteries and Power
Three standard AAA LR03 alkaline batteries power the escutcheon for roughly 75,000 to 105,000 cycles, up to about 2 years depending on traffic. Low battery LED warnings give notice well before the door stops reading, and the batteries sit in the internal escutcheon so they are changed without removing the unit from the door.
No - the mechanical key override cylinder opens the door with the site key regardless of battery state. Free egress from the inside is mechanical as well: the internal handle always opens the door.
Installation and Mortice Compatibility
This standard (648) escutcheon pairs with the Lockwood ENOHDSS bodies built for SMARTair: 3782ENOHDSS - 23 mm backset, 4782ENOHDSS - 25.4 mm backset and 6782ENOHDSS - 38 mm backset. For narrow-stile doors, use the narrow (908) escutcheon with the Lockwood 5782ENOHDSS. The lock body is ordered separately - it is not in the escutcheon box.
Approximately 30 - 120 mm, with thicker doors available on demand. Confirm your door leaf thickness before ordering so the correct spindle and fixing lengths are supplied.
Yes - the i-max installation template gives the drilling pattern. It is a converted CAD drawing, so check the printed scale against the hardware before cutting a door, and confirm the fit with our backset measuring guide or a site survey.
No. Tubular latches do not provide the spindle control or structural lockcase the electromechanical clutch needs. A compatible mortice lock body is required - see the Mortice Options tab.
Fire, DDA and Compliance
ASSA ABLOY states the i-max is fire tested to EN 1634, the European fire door standard - not an Australian FRL. Fire performance depends on the complete doorset and the fire-rated lock body, so confirm with your fire door certifier before fitting. Background: fire door smart locks.
Yes - this model carries the DDA compliant lever handle, stated by the manufacturer for accessible installations. See our DDA and accessibility chapter and the NDIS and DDA housing guide for how lever hardware fits AS 1428.1 expectations.
EN 1906 Category of Use Grade 4 durability, EN 1634 fire testing, and CE (EMC, R&TTE), RoHS, REACH, WEEE, RCM and R-NZ certifications per the manufacturer datasheet.
Upgrading Beyond Standalone
Update-on-Card adds card-carried permission updates; Wireless Online adds live monitoring through SMARTair hubs (each hub covers up to 30 doors within 30 m - compare gateways in chapter 08); Openow adds smartphone keys. The escutcheon hardware is upgradeable, managed through TS1000 with an Openow licence where mobile keys are wanted, plus the TS1000 lockdown upgrade for emergency lockdown.
Not on the Standalone tier - there is no app or Bluetooth credential on this model as supplied. Openow smartphone opening belongs to the upgrade tiers: see the UOC/Openow and Wireless Online/Openow versions of this escutcheon.
The SMARTair platform covers the same door or gate with other form factors: a SMARTair knob cylinder where the door keeps its own furniture, a SMARTair i-Reader wall reader for automated doors and barriers, or a SMARTair i-gate padlock for gates and enclosures.
