Smart Locks & Deadbolts on Doors With Vertical Push Pull Handles

Three proven pathways — and the five measurements we need before we can recommend the right solution for your door.

Vertical push pull handles look sleek and are increasingly common on modern residential and apartment entry doors across Queensland. But when a homeowner or strata resident wants to add a smart lock or a deadbolt, these long slender handles create a real puzzle.

The handle runs vertically alongside — or directly over — the area where a lock body normally sits. That overlap means you cannot just order any smart lock or deadbolt and assume it will fit. The geometry of your existing handle determines which upgrade path is right for you. Get this wrong and you have hardware that physically cannot be installed, or a door that won’t close properly.

This guide covers:

  • The five measurements you need before anyone can confirm compatibility
  • Three proven pathways — replace, retrofit, or offset and upgrade
  • Compatible products for each pathway with product links
  • What to know if your door is in a strata apartment building
  • Frequently asked questions from homeowners in this situation

For the door measurement concepts underlying this guide, see Chapter 02 — Measuring Your Door in the Smart Lock Buyer’s Guide. For how door type affects which smart locks are compatible, see Chapter 04 — Door Type Matching.

This guide was reviewed and updated in May 2026.

The five measurements we need

Before our team can confirm which pathway suits your door, we need five key measurements. Take these with a tape measure and photograph them clearly — or bring your door photos when you visit us at the showroom.

For help with backset measurement specifically, see our Measuring Your Lock Backset guide.

Measuring the overall length of the vertical push pull handle

① Overall Length of the Handle

Measure the full length of the vertical pull bar from top fixing point to bottom fixing point. This tells us whether a replacement integrated handle-lock will span correctly.

Measuring the distance from the handle bar to the existing lock centre

② Distance From Handle to Existing Lock

Measure from the centre of the push pull handle fixing to the centre of the existing lock. This reveals whether a retrofit smart lock will physically clear the handle bar. Less than 40 mm typically means only Pathway ① or ③ will work.

Measuring the backset of the existing lock

③ Existing Lock Backset

The backset is the distance from the door edge to the centre of the existing lock cylinder or knob. Common backsets in Australia are 60 mm and 70 mm. This determines which replacement lock body is compatible.

Backset and push pull handle offset shown together

④ Backset + Push Pull Offset Together

Some handles sit offset from the door face. This combined measurement — how far the lock sits from the edge and how far the handle projects — helps us calculate the available clearance zone for any new hardware.

Measuring the offset of the push pull handle from the door edge

⑤ Offset of Handle From the Door Edge

How far does the back of the push pull handle sit from the door face? This is critical for determining whether the handle physically obstructs a deadbolt thumb-turn or smart lock module.

Pro tip: Photograph each measurement with the tape measure in frame. A clear photo lets our team assess compatibility remotely before you spend anything. Send photos via the door style page or bring them into the showroom.

Your three pathways

Once we know your measurements, the solution will fall into one of three categories. Each pathway suits a different geometry — and a different appetite for change.

① Replace
Swap the entire push pull handle for a new integrated smart lock handle that looks similar but contains the lock mechanism within the handle itself.
② Retrofit
Keep your existing push pull handle and add a retrofit smart lock that fits around or beside it — where geometry allows.
③ Offset & Upgrade
Replace the existing straight handle with an offset pull handle to create clearance, then install a smart lock or smart deadbolt in the vacated space.
Product availability note: The specific product models shown in each pathway below were current at time of writing (May 2026). Smart lock ranges change — confirm a product is still available before purchasing. If you can’t find a model listed, contact us and we’ll recommend the current equivalent.

Pathway ①: Replace With an Integrated Smart Lock Handle

This is often the cleanest solution. A purpose-built entrance pull handle with an integrated smart lock replaces the existing push pull handle entirely. The lock mechanism is built into the handle body — there is no need to retrofit anything around the existing hardware. The exterior appearance remains a long vertical pull handle, but it now handles PIN, fingerprint, RFID, Bluetooth, or face recognition access as well.

These systems typically combine a long vertical pull bar (similar in form to your existing handle) with a smart lock module that manages all credentials within the one unit.

Key consideration: The door must have a mortice lock body (or be able to accept one) in the correct position. This pathway requires the most carpentry but delivers the most integrated result. A qualified locksmith should assess the door before ordering.

Pathway ②: Keep the Existing Handle — Add a Retrofit Smart Lock

If your measurements show there is sufficient clearance between the existing push pull handle and the current lock position, a retrofit smart lock may be able to sit alongside or above the handle without conflicting with it.

Retrofit smart locks replace the thumb-turn and/or exterior cylinder of the existing lock — leaving the handle completely untouched. These are by far the simplest installs, but they are only suitable when the handle geometry gives enough room for the lock module to operate freely.

Geometry check required: Many vertical push pull handles run directly adjacent to the lock, leaving no room for a retrofit module. This is why measurement ② (distance from handle to lock) is so important. If the handle overlaps or sits closer than approximately 40 mm to the lock centre, this pathway will not work.

Pathway ③: Replace With an Offset Pull Handle — Then Add a Smart Lock

When the existing handle sits directly beside the lock with no clearance to retrofit, and a full integrated replacement isn’t preferred, the third pathway is the most creative — and often the most effective.

An offset pull handle is a door pull that bends or steps away from the lock zone. Instead of running in a straight vertical line through the lock area, the handle sweeps to one side — leaving the lock position clear for a standard smart deadbolt, smart cylindrical lock, or smart mortice set. Common offset distances are 70 mm to 100 mm.

What is an offset pull handle? An offset handle has a “step” or curve built into the bar so that the fixing points and the gripping section are not vertically aligned. The handle grips on one side and the fixings sit on the other — meaning the handle no longer passes directly over the lock hole. Once the offset handle is installed, the products in Pathways ① and ② above all become candidates, depending on your door’s existing lock bore.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing push pull handle and just add any smart lock?
Not always. It depends entirely on how close the handle sits to the existing lock. If the handle bar passes directly over or very close to the lock position, most smart locks will not fit without modification. This is exactly why measurement ② — distance from handle to lock — is the most critical dimension to capture.

Will the Igloohome Retrofit work on my door?
The Igloohome Retrofit only replaces the interior thumb-turn side of the lock. It leaves the exterior completely unchanged — so the push pull handle stays as-is on the outside. This is the least invasive pathway, but it requires a compatible deadbolt lock body to already be present on the door. See the Igloohome Retrofit Lock Case Study for a real-world walkthrough.

I live in a strata apartment. Can I still change my front door hardware?
Apartment fire doors have specific compliance requirements. Changing a push pull handle or adding a new lock must be assessed against the one-penetration principle and your building’s fire door certification. Before proceeding, read our article on apartment fire door compliance on the Gold Coast, and check with your building manager or body corporate before ordering anything.

What is the most important measurement to take?
All five matter, but measurement ② (distance from the handle bar to the lock centre) is the one that most often determines whether a retrofit is feasible. A clearance of less than approximately 40 mm typically means only Pathway ① or ③ will work.

Can I browse compatible products online before calling?
Yes. Visit goldcoastsmartlocks.com.au/by-door-style/has-vertical-push-pull-handle/ where products are filtered and curated for exactly this door configuration.
