Borg BL2000PB Mechanical Digital Lock - Knob and Medium Lever - Polished Brass
The Borg BL2000PB is a fully mechanical pushbutton digital lock in Polished Brass - no battery, no electronics, no power supply required. Access is granted by pressing the correct combination of numbered buttons and turning the outside knob; inside, a matching medium lever always turns freely. The lock is automatic-locking: it secures itself the moment the door closes, and stays locked until the correct code is entered.
The BL2000PB is the non-holdback, non-key-override model in Borg's BL2000 Series - a mechanical digital lock range cycle-tested to 50,000 operations. The keypad uses a load plate design that resists code-cracking attempts by blocking the mechanism from being probed under load. Over 1,000 code combinations are available, and the code is changed at the workbench with the tweezers supplied in the box - see Changing The Code below before you buy if you think you might need to do this often.
The code is non-sequential: the buttons can be pressed in any order. If the code is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 it can be entered as 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 or any other sequence, as long as every correct digit has been pressed before the knob is turned. The inside handle is free at all times - occupants can exit without entering a code, satisfying egress safety expectations. The keypad is non-handed and reversible on site to suit either a left- or right-hand door.

If you are planning to mount this lock on a gate with a 50mm x 50mm aluminium frame, the standard 60mm backset latch supplied in the box will not fit. Changing The Code
Borg calls this the On The Bench method, and it is a fair name - the lock has to come off the door to do it. It is genuinely a bit fiddly: the keypad is turned face-down, a cover plate comes off over the coding chamber, and small coded (red) and un-coded (blue) pieces are rearranged with the tweezers supplied. Realistically, allow around 30 minutes the first time and 5-10 minutes once you have done it before (see the real-world times we have recorded). Most owners work it out themselves and never call a locksmith for it - but if you know you will want to change the code often, even just once a year, it is genuinely worth looking at BL2201SCECP instead - Borg's Easicode Pro system changes the code on the door itself in about 30 seconds. - Remove the lock from the door by unscrewing the two screws at the very top and bottom of the inside handle.
- Turn the keypad face-down on a flat surface. Remove the red retaining screws securing the cover plate over the coding chamber.
- Inside you will see: red coded pieces (4-5), blue un-coded pieces, and one clear C piece (the C button). Never remove the C piece.
- Press and hold the C button. While holding it, use the tweezers to rearrange the red and blue pieces into your new code positions. Keep the keypad face-down at all times so nothing falls out.
- Every hole must hold a piece - coded or un-coded - for the lock to work. All square cut-outs face outwards regardless of whether a piece is coded or un-coded.
- Replace the cover plate and secure with the red screws.
- Test the new code several times before refitting the lock to the door - Borg's own instructions recommend testing before the door closes, not after. Once refitted, test the code once more before closing the door.

Maintenance Guide
Apply a light spray of silicon-based lubricant (such as GT85) to the keypad surface and all exposed elements of the latch assembly. Wipe off any excess with a soft cloth. Do not use oil-based lubricants such as WD-40 - oil-based products attract dirt and impair the mechanism over time. Silicon-based lubricant also helps displace moisture from internal mechanisms.
- Remove the lock from the door.
- Spray the inside of the lock with GT85 or similar silicon-based lubricant through the piece holes on the reverse of the keypad. Wipe off excess with a soft cloth.
- Spray all fixings, accessories, and the latch with silicon-based lubricant.
- Push each button and rotate the knob several times to confirm smooth operation and that all buttons return fully to their outward position.
These maintenance steps can also be performed any time the lock operates stiffly or the code is accepted intermittently.

No - the standard 60mm backset latch in the box is too large for a 50mm x 50mm aluminium gate frame. You will need the 28mm backset left or right hand latch instead, sold separately - see Narrow Aluminium Gate Frames above, or read our full narrow stile gate guide. If you would rather not swap a latch, BL2002SC ships with the 28mm latch already fitted.
The BL2000PB suits sheltered external applications - pedestrian gates, courtyard access, and protected external doors. It should not be permanently exposed to sustained direct rain or submersion. Monthly silicon lubrication is recommended to keep it operating smoothly outdoors and to displace moisture from the mechanism.
Additional Information
The tubular latch supplied includes an anti-thrust pin beside the latchbolt. This pin deadlocks the latch against manipulation - it stops the latch being pushed back by a card or similar object when the door is closed. The anti-thrust pin must not enter the hole made for the latchbolt in the strike plate; if it does, adjust the strike plate position until the anti-thrust pin sits against its face.
The lock is supplied set for a right-hand hung door (door opens inward, hinged on the right). For a left-hand door, the blue handing screw on the back of the inside handle moves from position A to position B, and the latch support post moves to the matching hole - A for right-hand, B for left-hand. The keypad itself is non-handed and never needs reversing.
Two spindles are supplied - 100mm and 85mm. Use the longest one that fits your door thickness. A spindle cut too short can slip out of position when the door is slammed, causing a lockout; if the latch only retracts from one side of the door, the spindle is too short and needs replacing with a longer one.
The BL2000PB stores a single code - there is no way to program independent codes for different users. If multiple users need independent credentials, a smart lock with credential management is a better fit. Where one shared code across a user group is acceptable, this lock suits it well.
If you already have a Lockwood LW 002, 3572 or 3582 mortice lock in good condition, you do not need to replace the whole door prep. The BL002KIT, BL3572KIT and BL3582KIT adaptor kits convert that existing body to accept a BL2000 Series keypad, and BL2000KPB gives you a Polished Brass keypad-only replacement if the mechanism is sound but the keypad itself has worn out. All Borg locks are warranted against mechanical defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service for a minimum of 12 months from date of sale. The warranty does not cover damage from misuse, vandalism, or improper installation. The lock must not be dismantled - doing so will invalidate the warranty.

Access, Security and the Coding Chamber
One. This is a single-code lock, shared by everyone who needs access. If you need independent codes per user, a smart lock with credential management (rather than a mechanical pushbutton lock) is the better fit.
The load plate design behind the buttons is built specifically to resist probing - it blocks the mechanism from being manipulated under load, which is the classic weak point on cheaper pushbutton locks. Non-sequential entry (the digits can be pressed in any order) also means watching button wear alone will not reveal the sequence.
Yes. The factory default is 4-5 digits, and the spare coded and un-coded pieces in the box let you extend it to 6-7 digits for extra security, or shorten it to 3-4 digits if you would rather have something quick to enter. Every position in the coding chamber must hold a piece - coded or not - for the lock to function.
Changing The Code
The lock comes off the door, the keypad goes face-down, and a cover plate over the coding chamber comes off to expose the coded and un-coded pieces. You rearrange them with the tweezers supplied while holding the C button, then test the new code before refitting the lock. Realistically, about 30 minutes the first time, and 5-10 minutes once you have done it a couple of times - these are field figures from our own locksmiths, not a manufacturer estimate. If you are confident you will rarely or never touch the code again, the BL2000PB is a perfectly good, cheaper choice. But if there is a real chance you will need to change it - new tenants, staff turnover, a shared gate code that gets passed around more than it should - BL2201SCECP is worth the difference. Fit, Handing and Installation
It suits doors 35-54mm thick, which covers the great majority of standard timber and aluminium doors and gates. Two spindles are supplied (100mm and 85mm) so you can match the door without buying anything extra.

Not with the latch it ships with. The standard 60mm backset latch is too long for a 50mm x 50mm aluminium stile - you will need the handed 28mm backset left or right hand latch, or consider BL2002SC, which comes narrow-stile-ready from the factory. No - it is not IP rated, and Borg does not publish a weather rating for this mechanism. It is genuinely fine in a sheltered external spot (a covered gate, an awning-protected door) but should not sit in direct, sustained rain. Monthly silicon lubrication makes a real difference to reliability in any outdoor setting.
That is a holdback function, and the BL2000PB does not have one - only the inside handle is always free, not the whole lock. BL2200 (same platform, adds holdback, available in the same Polished Brass finish) is the model to look at instead. - Warranty claims for Borg products in Australia are processed through LSC, the authorised Australian importer and distributor. Where an item is returned to LSC, freight charges must be prepaid and the item returned within the warranty period.
- If LSC finds the returned item to be defective, it will be repaired or replaced, and a detailed assessment report is provided to the customer after examination.
