Borg BL2001 Mechanical Pushbutton Digital Lock - Polished Brass
The Borg BL2001 is a fully mechanical pushbutton combination lock — no battery, no electronics, no power supply required. Access is granted by pressing the correct combination of numbered buttons and turning the knob. The lock is automatic-locking: it secures itself the moment the door closes, and remains locked until the correct code is entered.
The BL2001 is the non-holdback model in the Borg BL2000 Series — a range of mechanical digital locks that has been cycle-tested to 50,000 operations. The keypad features a patented load plate design that eliminates code-cracking attempts by preventing the mechanism from being probed while under load. Over 8,000 unique code combinations are available, and the code can be changed by rearranging the internal tumblers — no tools required beyond the tweezers included in the box.
The code is non-sequential: the buttons in the code can be pressed in any order. For example, if the code is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 — it can be entered as 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 or any sequence, as long as all digits in the code have been pressed. The inside handle is free at all times — occupants can exit without entering a code, satisfying egress safety requirements. The keypad is non-handed and reversible on site.
Usually same day if ordered before 11am AEST (excluding weekends and Qld public holidays)

Installing on a narrow aluminium gate frame?
Planning to mount a Borg 2000 or 4000 series on an external gate with a 50mm × 50mm (or larger) aluminium frame?
Worried if the standard 60mm latch included in the box will fit?
You’re right — it won’t.
To get this lock working properly on gate frames, you’ll need the correct extended latch.

How to Change the Code
The code is changed by physically rearranging the red coded tumblers inside the keypad. The lock must be removed from the door to do this. Take extra care — behind the cover plate there are 14 small springs.
- Remove the lock from the door by unscrewing the two screws at the very top and bottom of the inside handle.
- Turn the keypad face-down on a flat surface. Remove the red retaining screws securing the cover plate over the coding chamber.
- Inside you will see: red coded tumblers (4-5), blue un-coded tumblers, and one clear C tumbler (the C button). Never remove the C tumbler.
- Press and hold the C button. While holding it, use the tweezers to rearrange the red and blue tumblers into your new code positions. Keep the keypad face-down at all times to prevent tumblers falling out.
- All square cut-outs must face outwards regardless of whether tumblers are coded or un-coded. For positions 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, Z: the square cut-out faces left and the dimple faces down. For positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, X, Y: the square cut-out faces right and the dimple faces up. Once correctly inserted, the dimple sits in the cut-out in the coding chamber.
- Replace the cover plate with the 14 springs and secure with the red screws.
- Test the new code 3-4 times before refitting the lock to the door. Once refitted, test the code once more before closing the door.
The spare tumblers included in the box allow the code length to be increased to 6-7 digits or reduced to 3-4 digits.
Maintenance Guide
Apply a light spray of silicon-based lubricant (such as GT85) to the keypad surface and all exposed elements of the latch assembly. Remove any excess with a soft cloth. Do not use oil-based lubricants such as WD-40 — oil-based products attract dirt and will impair the mechanism over time. Silicon-based lubricant also helps displace moisture from internal mechanisms.
- Remove the lock from the door.
- Spray the inside of the lock with GT85 or similar silicon-based lubricant through the tumbler holes on the reverse of the keypad. Remove excess with a soft cloth.
- Spray all fixings, accessories, and the latch with silicon-based lubricant.
- Push each button and rotate the knob several times to confirm smooth operation and that all buttons return fully to their outward position.
These maintenance steps can also be performed at any time if the lock operates stiffly or the code is accepted intermittently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this lock need a battery or power supply?
No. The BL2001 is fully mechanical — the pushbutton mechanism operates entirely without electricity. There are no batteries to replace, no wiring, and no power supply required.
Can the code be entered in any order?
Yes. The BL2000 series uses non-sequential code entry — the buttons in the code can be pressed in any order. If the code is set to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 — you can press 5, 3, 1, 4, 2 or any other sequence, as long as all the correct digits have been pressed before turning the knob.
Can I change the code myself?
Yes, but it requires removing the lock from the door. The code is changed by rearranging the red coded tumblers inside the keypad using the tweezers included in the box. Full instructions are provided above and in the code change PDF linked below. Test the new code several times before refitting the lock.
Will the standard 60mm latch work on aluminium gate frames?
No — the standard 60mm backset latch included in the box is too large to fit a 50mm x 50mm aluminium gate frame. The BLS272000 has a 28mm backset, which is compact enough to suit these frames. It is available separately and should be added to your order if you are installing on a gate frame of this type.
Is the lock suitable for external use?
The BL2001 is suitable for sheltered external applications — pedestrian gates, courtyard access, and protected external doors. It should not be permanently exposed to sustained direct rain or submersion. Monthly silicon lubrication is recommended to maintain smooth operation in outdoor environments and to displace moisture from the mechanism.
Additional Information
The tubular latch supplied includes an anti-thrust pin that sits beside the latchbolt. This pin deadlocks the latch against manipulation — it prevents the latch from being pushed back by a card or similar object when the door is closed. The anti-thrust pin must not enter the hole made for the latchbolt in the strike plate. If it does, adjust the position of the strike plate until the anti-thrust pin sits against the face of the strike plate.
The lock is supplied set for a right-hand hung door (door opens inward, hinged on the right). For a left-hand door, the blue handing screw on the back of the inside handle is moved from position A to position B. The latch support post must also be moved to the correct hole — hole A for right-hand, hole B for left-hand. The keypad itself is non-handed and does not need to be reversed.
Two spindles are supplied — 100mm and 85mm. Use the longest spindle that fits the door thickness. If the spindle is cut too short it may slip out of position when the door is slammed, resulting in lockout. If the latch retracts from only one side of the door, the spindle is too short and must be replaced with a longer one.
The BL2001 stores a single code — there is no ability to program multiple independent codes for different users. If multiple users require independent access credentials, consider a smart lock with credential management. For applications where a single shared code across a user group is acceptable, the BL2001 is well suited.
All Borg locks are warranted against mechanical defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service for a minimum of 12 months from date of sale. The warranty does not cover damage arising from misuse, vandalism, or improper installation. The lock must not be dismantled — doing so will invalidate the warranty.
