The Rim Slam Latch Format
What exactly is a rim-fixed slam latch and why does it exist?
Most mechanical digital gate locks drive a tubular latch that bores through the gate stile edge. That works fine on 90x90mm timber posts or wide aluminium section. But a huge number of Australian gates have 50x50mm or 65x65mm aluminium hollow stiles - too narrow for a 60mm latch, and hollow-section to boot. The rim-fixed slam latch solves it by mounting to the face of the gate instead of the edge: the latch body sits behind the gate, the bolt engages the strike on the post frame, and you need only three small through-holes for the spindle and fixings. It is specifically designed for the narrow-stile gate problem. Most mechanical digital gate locks drive a tubular latch that bores through the gate stile edge. That works fine on 90x90mm timber posts or wide aluminium section. But a huge number of Australian gates have 50x50mm or 65x65mm aluminium hollow stiles - too narrow for a 60mm latch, and hollow-section to boot. The rim-fixed slam latch solves it by mounting to the face of the gate instead of the edge: the latch body sits behind the gate, the bolt engages the strike on the post frame, and you need only three small through-holes for the spindle and fixings. It is specifically designed for the narrow-stile gate problem. There is no inside lever handle - how do I open the gate from inside?
Via the turn knob on the slam latch body, which is mounted to the inside face of the gate. Rotate it to retract the latch bolt and open the gate. There is no clutching action on this knob - it operates freely without any code. Think of it as the equivalent of the inside free lever on a BL4401MGPROECP; same function, different hardware form because the rim slam format doesn't carry an inside handle. Can I use this on a pool safety barrier gate?

A self-latching latch lock like this slam latch is fine on a pool barrier gate so long as a compliant self-latching gate latch (such as a MagnaLatch) is fitted and doing the barrier's self-latching job; holdback on the snib is only acceptable while that gate latch is doing the job, and the supplied dome head screws disable holdback and the inside deadlock altogether if you would rather take them out of play. Confirm with a licensed pool safety inspector before installation, and read the canonical pool gate compliance treatment plus the holdback/pool-gate ruling.
