Burg-Wächter Key Safe 40 – Large Wall-Mount Combination Key Safe with Shutter Flap, 11cm Capacity
The Burg-Wächter Key Safe 40 is the largest wall-mount model in the Burg-Wächter key safe range. Built from die-cast zinc with a 4-digit resettable mechanical combination, it provides 10,000 possible access codes, a sliding protective shutter flap over the dials, and an 80mm-wide interior that accommodates keys up to 11cm and bulkier keyrings that do not fit the smaller models.
Like the Key Safe 30, this model uses a key hook and a magnetic pad inside, giving it flexibility for different key types. The 80mm wide interior (versus 65mm on the Key Safe 30) and 65mm interior height provide noticeably more room for thick keychains or multiple keys side by side. The shutter flap slides down to expose the dial face and release button, protecting the dials from dust, dirt, and direct weather when closed.
No power source is required at any point. The mechanical combination operates independently of Wi-Fi, batteries, and apps.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the factory-set combination?
The Key Safe 40 ships with the combination set to 0-0-0-0. Change this to a personal code before putting the unit into service.
How do I open the Key Safe 40?
Slide the shutter flap downward to expose the dials and the release button. Rotate all four dials to your combination, then grasp the sides of the top section and pull the lid toward you. To lock, close the lid and rotate the dials away from the set combination to scramble the code.
How is the Key Safe 40 different from the Key Safe 30?
Both models use the same shutter flap design and dual hook-and-magnetic-pad interior. The Key Safe 40 has a wider interior (80mm vs 65mm) and a greater maximum key length (11cm vs 9cm). The Key Safe 40 body is also deeper (54mm vs 40mm), accommodating bulkier keyrings and key bundles. If your keys are under 9cm and fit comfortably in a 65mm interior, the Key Safe 30 is an equally capable and slightly more compact option.
Can the combination be changed?
Yes. Open the safe, slide the reset pin left and down as shown in the instruction diagram, set your new combination, return the pin, and test the new code before closing. The Key Safe 40 reset process does not require removing a plastic cap — that step applies only to the Key Safe 10 and 20.
What if the combination is forgotten?
There is no override or emergency access method. If the code is lost, the safe cannot be opened. Record the combination and store it in a separate, secure location before the unit is placed into service.
Additional Information
The Key Safe 40 uses the simplified slide-pin reset: open the safe, slide the pin left and down, set the new combination, return the pin, and test. There is no plastic cap to remove. This is different from the Key Safe 10 and 20, which require removing a black cap before operating the reset pin. Follow the instruction sheet included with the unit.
Fix to a solid masonry, brick, or timber wall using all four corner fixing holes. Drill Ø6mm holes, insert the supplied plugs, and secure with the supplied screws. Choose a position that is discreet from public view and has enough ambient light for users to read the dials. The shutter flap protects the dials from rain, but avoid mounting directly below a downpipe or in a zone subject to sustained water flow.
Rotate all four dials weekly to keep them moving freely. Keep the shutter flap closed when not in use. Wipe the body with a dry cloth periodically. If the dials become stiff, apply a small amount of dry graphite lubricant sparingly to the dial spindles. Do not use oil-based lubricants.
The Key Safe 40 is the widest wall-mount option at 80mm interior width. If the primary requirement is maximum key capacity and space for a bulky keyring rather than key length, the Key Safe 40 is the right choice over the Key Safe 30. If portability or gate-mounting is needed, the Key Safe 50 adds a detachable shackle. See our guide to secure key storage for practical sizing and placement guidance.
