Carbine CEL-3IN1 Digital Lever Lock with RFID and Key Override – Matte Black Kit with Batteries
The Carbine CEL-3IN1-SL8MBKIT is a three-credential digital lever lock providing touchscreen PIN code, RFID/NFC access, and mechanical key override. It fits into a standard 54mm lockset hole with no additional drilling, suits door thicknesses of 35–51mm, and includes a 60–70mm adjustable tubular latch. This kit includes 4 x AA Duracell Procell batteries.
The lock accepts PIN codes (4–8 digits), RFID cards, FOBs, wristbands, and most Mifare 13.56MHz NFC-enabled smartphones. Up to 25 user codes and 25 RFID credentials are stored locally in the lock — no hub, gateway, or internet connection required for any access function. A guiding code feature allows false digits to be entered before the real PIN to prevent shoulder surfing. Double authorisation mode (card plus code simultaneously) is also supported.
The CEL-3IN1 leverset is fire rated on E-Core and Pyropanel Maxi Pandor door assemblies (both at FRL -/60/30) and is fitted with an NCC-compliant SL8-style lever. A Satin Nickel variant (CEL-3IN1-SL8-SNKIT) is also available. For an upgraded model with 100-credential capacity and Firecore fire certification, see the Carbine CEL2-3IN1-SL8SNKIT.
The CEL-3IN1-SL8 leverset is certified for use on two door core types, both at FRL -/60/30 (60 minutes integrity, 30 minutes insulation):
• E-Core doorsets — Jensen Hughes Report FAS220275 (formerly Warringtonfire), valid to 30/11/2027
• Pyropanel Maxi Pandor doorsets — Warringtonfire Report FRT220272, valid to 28/09/2028
Fire certification is door-core-specific — always confirm your exact door core type before specifying. The deadbolt variant is not fire rated. See: Fire door types & certification · Fire rating certificates · Buyers Guide Ch05: Fire Doors

The CEL-3IN1 operates on 13.56MHz Mifare NFC. It is compatible with RFID cards, FOBs, wristbands, and stickers. Most NFC-enabled Android phones with Mifare support will also work, however compatibility varies by phone manufacturer and model. We strongly recommend testing your specific phone before installation. If your phone is not compatible, Mifare RFID stickers are available to adhere to the back of your device and function as a physical credential.
Carbine CEL / CEL2 / CDL – Complete Product Family
CEL2-BT deadbolt variant: RFID is not compatible — Bluetooth and PIN only. CDL2 models use a membrane keypad (not touchscreen) and do not support RFID. All KIT numbers include batteries.

Battery, Power & Backup Access
- Powered by 4 x AA alkaline batteries. Duracell Procell batteries are recommended — do not use lithium or rechargeable (NiMH) batteries.
- Battery life is approximately 5,000 openings. Actual life depends on usage frequency, ambient temperature, and battery brand. High-use properties (Airbnb, small business) will see faster battery turnover than low-traffic residential doors.
- Low battery warning is provided via LED and audible indicators before full depletion — typically with several days of continued use remaining.
- Mechanical key override provides physical backup entry at all times using the included C4 cylinder keys — always keep a key stored securely off-site.
- This KIT version includes batteries. Non-KIT variants (CEL-3IN1-SL8SN / CEL-3IN1-SL8MB) do not include batteries.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the CEL-3IN1 and the CEL2-3IN1?
The CEL2 is the next generation of the CEL-3IN1. It uses the same physical footprint and fits the same 54mm hole, but includes an improved touchscreen and motor, a lower-profile escutcheon, and expanded credential capacity of 100 user codes or RFID connections (up from 25 on the CEL-3IN1). CEL2 fire-rated leverset variants also carry an additional Firecore certification allowing up to -/120/30 on TVC40 doorsets. Retrofit plates are available for replacing CEL-3IN1 installations with CEL2 without re-drilling the door.
Will my smartphone work with the RFID function?
The lock uses 13.56MHz Mifare NFC. Most modern Android phones with NFC enabled will work when held near the reader. iPhone compatibility is more limited due to iOS background NFC reading constraints depending on the iOS version. We strongly recommend testing your specific phone model before purchasing or installing. If your phone is not compatible, Mifare RFID stickers are available that adhere to the back of your device and function as a physical credential — this is the most reliable fallback solution.
Is this lock suitable for fire-rated doors?
Yes — the leverset variant is certified for use on E-Core fire door assemblies to AS1530.4:2014, FRL -/60/30 (Warringtonfire Report FAS220275, valid to 30/11/2027). The deadbolt variant is not fire rated. A fire door is a certified system — the lock certification must match the specific core type of the door it is fitted to. This lock is certified for E-Core; if your door is Firecore or Pyropanel, confirm compatibility before specifying. If you live in a Gold Coast apartment, your entry door is most likely a fire door — see our guide: What locks are compliant on Gold Coast apartment fire doors? Professional installation is required on all fire door applications. See also: Fire door types and smart lock certification · Fire rating certificates · Buyers Guide Ch05: Fire Doors
Can I use this lock with a 127mm backset latch?
No. The CEL-3IN1 is compatible with 60–70mm adjustable backset only. It cannot accommodate a 127mm latch. If your door currently has a 127mm latch, the latch will need to be changed to a 60 or 70mm unit before the CEL-3IN1 can be fitted. See: How to measure your lock backset and Buyers Guide Ch02: Measuring Your Door for full guidance before ordering.
What batteries should I use and how long do they last?
The manufacturer specifies 4 x AA Duracell Procell batteries, or equivalent good-quality alkaline batteries. Do not use lithium or rechargeable (NiMH) batteries — these can cause erratic operation or damage to the electronics. Battery life is approximately 5,000 openings, though this varies with usage frequency, ambient temperature, and battery brand. For a realistic lifespan guide in Australian conditions, see: How long do digital door locks last?
Can I add a deadbolt to my door as well?
On a standard residential door: yes, provided the door prep allows a second hole without compromising the door. On a fire-rated door: no. Fire door standards (AS1905.1) permit only one locking penetration — a second deadbolt bores a 54mm hole which exceeds the maximum secondary penetration allowance, voids the fire door certification, and prevents the door from self-latching correctly. See: Secondary locks and the one-penetration principle on apartment fire doors
Is professional installation required?
On a standard timber door where the existing 54mm hole and backset match, DIY installation is possible by following the included installation guide carefully. However, professional installation is required on fire-rated doors (legal requirement) and strongly recommended on aluminium-framed doors and security screen configurations where door prep, clearance, and spindle adjustment require trade experience. Terry’s Locksmiths can supply and install this lock across the Gold Coast — see: Site survey and installation services
Additional Information
The guiding code feature allows random digits to be entered before or after the real PIN code. The lock ignores the extra digits and unlocks when the correct sequence is detected within the string. This prevents observers identifying the correct code through shoulder surfing, and masks wear patterns on frequently pressed keypad digits. The anti-peep PIN function is explained further in Buyers Guide Ch03: Access Methods.
IP54 means the exterior escutcheon is tested for dust protection and water spray resistance from any direction. This is suitable for sheltered entry positions where the door is not directly facing rain — for example, a covered entry or undercover porch. IP54 is not suitable for fully exposed gate positions or any door facing directly into weather. For those applications, look for IP65 or IP66. Critically, IP ratings do not cover UV degradation, salt air corrosion, or sustained heat — all significant factors in coastal Queensland. Confirm suitability for your specific location before purchasing. Full IP rating guide: Australian smart lock standards explained — IP ratings table
The CEL-3IN1 is well suited to short-stay rental properties. Issue a unique PIN code to each guest for their stay and delete it at checkout — no key handover, no lockbox, no re-keying. Up to 25 separate user codes can be active simultaneously. For properties running back-to-back bookings via a property management system, the CEL2-BT (Bluetooth-enabled variant) adds app-based code management. Full guidance: Airbnb smart locks in Australia — do you really need WiFi? and Buyers Guide Ch07: Airbnb & Short-Stay Rentals
The CEL-3IN1 leverset is certified for E-Core fire door assemblies. When specifying for fire door use, confirm that all other hardware in the assembly — hinges, seals, closer — is also fire rated and compatible with the certified configuration. The fire certificate covers the lock in the same door configuration as tested; modifications outside that configuration may void compliance.
If the fire door is in a Gold Coast apartment building, be aware of three asbestos risk windows that may require a pre-drilling assessment before any locksmith works on the door: pre-1990 construction, Korab/Pyrokor recall (1993–1998), and a current active alert for Pyropanel FRB board imported 2021–May 2025 (chrysotile asbestos contamination confirmed by the Australian Border Force). Terry’s Locksmiths will assess asbestos risk before commencing any fire door work. See: Asbestos in Gold Coast apartment fire doors — why your locksmith warns you before drilling
The three most common smart lock installation errors — wrong spindle position, mismatched backset, and door misalignment — all accelerate motor wear and reduce service life. A lock installed on a binding door is working harder on every operation cycle. If your door doesn't hang squarely and close smoothly without force, address that before fitting the lock. See: 3 common DIY smart lock installation mistakes and easy fixes and Buyers Guide Ch12: Installation & Troubleshooting
The lock stores up to 25 RFID credentials and 25 user PIN codes as separate pools, plus 1 programming code and 4 single-use codes. The programming code is for lock configuration only and cannot be used as a regular access code. If 25 credentials are insufficient for your application, the CEL2-3IN1-SL8SNKIT increases this to 100 user codes or RFID connections. For a full explanation of how smart lock access methods and credential management work, see Buyers Guide Ch03: Access Methods.
