The Austyle 49429 is the 304 stainless steel entrance mortice that sits behind an Austyle digital lever set and does the actual locking. It has a 60mm backset, 85mm centre-to-centre spacing and a 240 x 22mm faceplate, and it suits standard hinged timber and aluminium doors. The lever set on the outside handles the credentials; this body handles the bolt.
It is supplied in the box with the 59406 Lever Entrance Set. You buy it separately in two situations: to complete a 59405 Lever Latch Set, which ships with a tubular latch and no mortice, or to upgrade a 59407 Digital Lever Entrance Set from its standard 30mm mortice to a 60mm backset. It is also the right part when an existing mortice has worn out.

This listing is the mortice lock body on its own. There are no electronics, no lever, no keypad, no cylinder and no fixing hardware. Those are supplied with the lever set. - 60mm backset, 85mm centre-to-centre. The standard Australian residential entrance preparation for timber and aluminium hinged doors. If your measurement comes out at 60mm, this is the body - see backset in the measuring chapter.

Mortice Selection - Which Lock Body Do You Need?
Austyle publishes three mortice bodies across the digital lever range. They are not interchangeable, and the difference that matters is backset. Confirm your door before ordering - the guide to what backset is and how to measure it is the place to start, and identifying a mortice body already in a door helps if you are replacing rather than fitting new.
They share a lever range, not a door preparation. A 30mm backset pocket will not take this body, and a 28mm sliding door pocket certainly will not. Getting it wrong means a door that has already been cut - which is why the wrong backset is one of the most common installation mistakes we see. Door thickness is set by the lever set, not by the mortice. The 59405, 59406 and 59407 all cover a 35-65mm door thickness range, so if the lever set fits, so does this body. Door thickness in the measuring chapter explains why the two measurements are independent.

The mortice sits inside the door edge, where moisture collects and ventilation is poor. 304 stainless is there for corrosion resistance rather than looks - a rusted mortice binds long before it fails outright, and by then the door has usually been forced a few times. Worth knowing on coastal jobs in particular.
If the bolt is stiff or the door needs a shove, the striker plate alignment is the first thing to check, not the mortice. Where the jamb has moved or the rebate is deep, an 85mm or 125mm extended striker plate is often the real fix. See also the three common installation mistakes.

Mortice bodies are the part of a smart lock installation that goes wrong most often, almost always because of a measurement taken after the door was cut rather than before. Our measuring your door chapter and the Buyer's Guide are the background reading.
Choosing the Right Body
It is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle hole. It determines where the lock body sits inside the door, so it has to match the preparation exactly - there is no adjustment. Austyle offers 30mm, 60mm and 28mm across the range, and this is the 60mm. The backset explainer and Ch 02 on backset both cover it.
Take the lever set off and measure to the spindle centre, then look at the faceplate. A 240 x 22mm faceplate with a 60mm backset is this body. The general method for identifying a fitted mortice is in identify your body, and measuring the faceplate is the quickest single check.
No. Sliding and security screen doors take the 49425, which has a 28mm backset and dual locking bolts for the shallower stile. That body only pairs with the 59407. See the door type compatibility matrix.
Fitting and Alignment
Nine times in ten it is the striker, not the mortice. Check the jamb plate lines up with the bolt when the door is closed, and that the door has not dropped on its hinges. Where the jamb has moved or the rebate is deeper than standard, an extended striker - 85mm or 125mm - is the proper fix rather than filing the plate. Misalignment covers the diagnosis.
The mortice itself is handed and can be reversed - the Austyle manuals give a four-step procedure for flipping the latch. What matters more on these sets is the spindle hub arrow direction, which differs between the 59405 and the 59407 and is a genuine trap. Door handing in Australia is the primer, and the lever set's own manual has the specific rule.
Yes - print at 100 percent, never "fit to page", and measure the 100mm scale bar on the sheet before you mark the door. A template printed at 96 percent looks completely normal and will put every bore in the wrong place. Installation mistakes has more in this vein.

- Damage caused by water entering from the inside of the door (the exterior is rated IP55; internal water ingress is not covered)
- Installation on tongue-and-groove doors, where water can penetrate through the groove
- Installation on gates
- Prolonged direct exposure to sunlight or rain - the lock must be positioned under an eave or in a sheltered area
- Damage caused by use of lithium or rechargeable batteries - only high-quality alkaline AA batteries (4 x AA) are supported
