The McGrath Windsor is a versatile, non-biometric digital smart lock built for Australian residential, commercial, and retrofit applications. It offers four access methods - keypad PIN, RFID card or tag, Bluetooth eKey via the McGrath Locks App, and mechanical key override - with broad hardware compatibility that makes it a strong choice where fire-rated compliance, installer flexibility, and long-term local support all matter. It is the fire-assessed member of the McGrath Locks standard-stile range (see the McGrath brand profile), and sits alongside the non-fire-rated McGrath Albion on the same 60/70mm latch platform. For an overview of how each access method works, see our guide to smart lock access methods.

The Windsor is fire assessed up to 2 hours on Firecore and E-Core doors - the two most common fire door core types in Queensland apartment buildings. Fire performance is system-based: it is achieved only when the lock is installed as part of an approved doorset configuration with a compatible latch or mortice, as explained in why you cannot just swap the lock on a fire door. The lock is supplied with a McGrath 60/70mm adjustable tubular latch (Black / Stainless Steel), so check your backset and door thickness before ordering, and is available in Matt Black and Satin Nickel.

Out of the box the Windsor works locally over Bluetooth - no internet required. Add an optional McGrath gateway for remote unlocking, credential management and access history from anywhere (what a gateway actually does). If you need a fingerprint reader on the same fire-assessed platform, look at the McGrath Hamilton; for the full range of locks approved for fire doors, browse fire-rated smart locks.

Estimated Dispatch
Usually ships same day if ordered before 11am AEST (excludes weekends and Queensland public holidays).
DDA compliance icon
Disability Act Compliance (DDA)
DDA compliance on the McGrath Windsor is achieved by fitting the optional DDA-compliant external levers. To convert the baseline Windsor to a DDA-compliant configuration, add the matching external and internal DDA handles for your chosen finish to your basket alongside this lock. What AS 1428.1 lever compliance actually requires, and how the Disability Discrimination Act applies to door hardware, are covered in our guides; the DDA-compliant smart lock range and NDIS assistive technology funding are explained for participants and builders.

DDA lever handles - add to basket to make the Windsor DDA compliant: Terry's Locksmiths can pre-fit the DDA-compliant levers during installation or prior to shipping, as correct fitment can be a little tricky - see our advice and installation page. The DDA levers can be added on this product page or added to your cart during checkout. When fitted, the DDA levers meet BCA AS 1428.1-2009. If you need DDA compliance built in from the box rather than as an add-on, the McGrath Stafford and McGrath Hamilton ship with DDA-compliant levers as standard.

Key Features

  • Four-in-one access methods: keypad PIN, RFID cards or tags, Bluetooth eKeys, and mechanical key override (the four-layer authentication stack explained).
  • Managed via the McGrath Locks App using Bluetooth, with optional Wi-Fi gateway for remote access - browse all Wi-Fi capable smart locks.
  • Fire assessed up to 2 hours on Firecore and E-Core doors in approved doorset configurations - how AS 1905.1 fire door hardware certification works.
  • DDA compliance achievable by fitting the optional DDA-compliant levers (BCA AS 1428.1-2009) - see the DDA levers above.
  • Anti-peep PIN entry allows random digits before or after the correct code.
  • Incorrect-attempt lock-out activates after repeated failed access attempts - five wrong codes or cards locks the keypad for 35 seconds, during which only the app can operate the lock (this is the genuine incorrect-PIN alarm, not Tamper Alert).
  • Reset button can be disabled via the app for additional security.
  • Passage mode allows the door to remain unlocked when required - set it from the app, or at the keypad by entering a valid code then 123# within 5 seconds.
  • Audit trail records door access events within the app - useful for dispute resolution on rental and commercial doors.
  • Tempered glass screen for durability in high-use environments - the lock is durability tested to 300,000 cycles.
  • Salt spray tested for coastal use: 300 hours for the Matt Black finish and 96 hours for Satin Nickel - worth weighing up if you are near the beach (see corrosion resistance grades).
  • Generous credential capacity: up to 250 PIN codes, 1,000 RFID credentials and unlimited Bluetooth eKeys - enough for a small commercial site or multi-tenancy building.
  • Field-changeable handing for left- or right-hand opening doors - field-reversible vs fixed handing.
  • Supplied with a McGrath 60/70mm adjustable tubular latch and strike plate (one of the tubular latches for smart locks we also sell as a spare).

Battery, Power & Backup Access

  • Powered by 4 x AA alkaline batteries (not included). Terry's Locksmiths strongly recommends Duracell above any other battery brand - see choosing batteries for a TTLock lock.
  • Use of lithium or rechargeable AA batteries is not recommended.
  • Typical battery life up to 18 months based on approximately 10 uses per day (McGrath figure; standby draw under 30mA) - what really affects battery life.
  • Low-battery warnings are provided both in the app and audibly at the lock - you will hear the alert each time you wake the keypad once the battery pack drops below about 4.8V. Fit a fresh set of alkaline cells and never mix old and new. On a gateway install, remote functions drop out before local ones - reading a low-battery fault correctly.
  • User credentials are retained during battery replacement.
  • USB-C emergency power port allows temporary operation using a power bank if batteries are fully depleted - what to do when the battery dies.
  • Mechanical key override provides fail-safe access in all power conditions. Two keys are supplied; store the spare outside the house, and cut extras from the Windsor / Albion key blank. More in power and battery FAQs.

App Platform & Data Hosting

Australia icon
The McGrath Locks mobile app is a customised, McGrath-branded platform tailored specifically for the McGrath Locks product range. The app is managed, supported and distributed locally by McGrath Locks in Australia. Australian-based support staff handle warranty claims, app troubleshooting and platform queries - you are not dealing with an overseas vendor. The underlying cloud infrastructure is provided by TTLock, a globally deployed IoT platform - see what TTLock is, the McGrath / TTLock platform card, and where each smart lock platform hosts its data. Platform security is covered openly in Chapter 14 - security considerations.
The McGrath Locks App is a free download for iOS and Android. iOS App StoreAndroid Google Play The TTLock App User Manual and our TTLock tips and tricks (including the 24-hour passcode activation rule) will get you set up quickly.
Long-Term Support & Confidence
McGrath smart locks are backed by long-established industry partners and supported locally. To learn more, read Why Terry's Locksmiths, LSC & McGrath Locks Give Long-Term Confidence - in particular the supply chain behind every McGrath installation and why longevity matters more than features. For a realistic view of lock lifespan, see how long digital door locks last.

Wi-Fi Remote Access (Optional - Gateway Required)

The Windsor does not include native Wi-Fi connectivity. Remote access and management features are available only when the lock is paired with a compatible McGrath Locks gateway. When a gateway is installed, users can remotely unlock the door, issue or revoke access credentials, and view access activity through the McGrath Locks App from anywhere with an internet connection - Wi-Fi / remote access explained.

Not sure whether you need a gateway? See our guide to whether you actually need a gateway, or the full differences between the McGrath G2, G3, G4 and G5 gateways. Browse the current range: G3 PoE Ethernet gateway (for IT-managed commercial sites), G4 4G / Wi-Fi gateway (4G SIM fallback for remote or holiday homes), and G5 dual-band Wi-Fi gateway (solves the 2.4GHz band-steering problem). All are in the modules and Wi-Fi gateways category.

Position the gateway within Bluetooth range of the lock (placement tips). If a gateway ever drops off Wi-Fi, band steering is the usual culprit, and local access keeps working when the internet is down. Short-stay hosts can connect a gateway-equipped Windsor to a booking platform - see what changes with a gateway and PMS.

Fire Rated

Looking for other fire-rated smart lock options?

Fire-rated smart locks must be selected carefully. Fire performance applies to the complete doorset - the lock, latch or mortice, door leaf, and installation method. Different smart lock models suit different fire door configurations and usage requirements - see which platform suits fire-rated door applications.

To view our full range of smart locks suitable for fire door applications when installed in approved configurations, visit: Browse Fire-Rated Smart Locks for Fire Doors. Within the McGrath range alone you can choose the raised-button Stafford, the Braille-equipped Bardon, or the fingerprint Hamilton; a lower-cost non-app option is the Carbine CEL2-3IN1 fire-rated leverset, and a higher-spec step-up is the Lockton Cadell52 fire-rated mortice lock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the McGrath Windsor supplied with a mortice lock?
No. The Windsor is supplied with a McGrath 60/70mm adjustable tubular latch. It is also compatible with approved mortice locks - such as the dormakaba MS2602 - when specified separately. If your door has a mortice pocket already, Chapter 02 - mortice lever and escutcheon shows what to look for; a rebate kit is available for French door pairs.
Can the Windsor be used on fire-rated doors?
Yes, when installed on Firecore or E-Core doors using approved latch or mortice configurations. Fire performance is system-based and limited by the Fire Resistance Level of the complete doorset. Certification documents are in the Fire Cert Docs tab, and our guide to fire door types and smart lock certification explains how this works. In a strata building, get body corporate approval first and do not DIY the install.
How do I make the Windsor DDA compliant?
Fit the optional DDA-compliant levers. Add the external DDA handle for your finish (Black or Satin Nickel) plus the matching internal handles (Black or Satin Nickel) to your basket. When fitted, they meet BCA AS 1428.1-2009. Terry's can pre-fit them during installation. Which DDA lock suits your project is worked through in our DDA smart locks guide.
Does the Windsor require internet access?
No. The lock operates locally via Bluetooth using the McGrath Locks App. Remote access and management require an optional Wi-Fi gateway. Not sure whether you need one? See our guide to whether you actually need a gateway and what a McGrath lock can do without Wi-Fi. On a Bluetooth-only install, calibrate the lock clock from the app now and then so timed codes stay accurate.
Does the Windsor support fingerprint or facial recognition?
No. The Windsor is a non-biometric model and does not support fingerprint, palm, or face recognition. If you need fingerprint access on a standard-stile door, the McGrath Hamilton adds a fingerprint reader on the same fire-assessed platform; browse all fingerprint smart locks or read how fingerprint readers behave before deciding.

Additional Information

Batteries
Use only standard AA alkaline batteries. Lithium or rechargeable batteries are not recommended. User credentials are retained during battery replacement, and USB-C emergency power allows temporary access if batteries are fully depleted. Replace the set when the app warns you, and fix any door misalignment - a binding latch is the most common cause of short battery life.
IP65 - External Handle Only
The IP65 rating applies to the external handle only and is intended for sheltered installations. The internal assembly and battery compartment are not IP rated and must not be exposed to water or moisture. See Chapter 11 - Australian Smart Lock Standards for a plain-English explanation of IP ratings, and coastal environments if you are near the beach.
Installation
Installation should be carried out by a qualified locksmith or installer, particularly for fire-rated doorsets where approved hardware configurations must be maintained - see when DIY is appropriate and when it is not. Terry's Locksmiths can supply and fit the Windsor across South East Queensland - book a free site survey or read about professional supply and installation. If you do fit it yourself, avoid the three most common DIY mistakes.
Brand Context
McGrath Locks is distributed in Australia through LSC. For why the Terry's and LSC distribution chain matters for long-term support and parts availability, see why Terry's, LSC, and McGrath Locks give long-term confidence, especially LSC's century in the security industry and warranty as a confidence signal.
Tamper Alert - leave it switched off
The McGrath Locks App carries a legacy "Tamper Alert" toggle inherited from the TTLock platform. McGrath hardware does not support it, and switching it on only produces phantom alerts. Leave it off - see why McGrath locks do not support Tamper Alert and, if it is already on, how to turn it off in three steps. The Windsor's genuine security alarm is the incorrect-attempt lock-out described under Key Features.

McGrath Windsor Fire Rated Smart Lock - FAQ, Setup and Owner's Guide

Everything below is here to help you choose, install, set up and live with your McGrath Windsor. For general smart-lock questions see our Smart Lock FAQ (Chapter 13), for the platform itself see the TTLock Platform Guide (Chapter 14), and for measuring and fitting see Chapter 02 - Measuring Your Door.

Access and Credentials

What are the four ways to unlock the Windsor?
Keypad PIN on the tempered-glass touchscreen, an RFID card or tag held to the reader, a Bluetooth eKey from the McGrath Locks App on your phone, and the mechanical key override. Fingerprint, palm and face recognition are not fitted to this model. Chapter 03 compares all six credential types side by side; the four-layer authentication stack explains why a key override still matters on an electronic lock.
What kinds of PIN codes can I issue?
The McGrath Locks App issues permanent codes, time-limited codes with a start and end, one-time codes that expire after a single use, and cyclic (recurring) codes for a cleaner or contractor. Codes are 4 to 9 digits. The six TTLock passcode types are described in Chapter 14, and the weekly cleaner example shows a cyclic code in practice.
I created a permanent code but it does not work yet - why?
A permanent passcode created in the app has to be used at the keypad within 24 hours to activate, otherwise it lapses and must be re-issued. This is the single most common support call on the platform. The 24-hour activation rule and how to stop codes expiring cover the fix; the activation windows table lists the window for every code type.
What is anti-peep PIN entry?
You can type random digits before and after your real code and the lock still opens, as long as the correct sequence appears somewhere in what you entered. It stops anyone watching over your shoulder from learning the code, and it also spreads finger marks across the whole glass rather than over four or five buttons.
Which RFID cards and tags work, and how many can I add?
The Windsor reads 13.56 MHz MIFARE credentials, and two RFID tags are in the box. Extra McGrath credentials are sold individually in four formats - ISO card, keyring fob, wristband and adhesive sticker - and each one is enrolled and revoked individually in the app. How RFID credentials work is covered in Chapter 03; The Windsor holds up to 1,000 RFID credentials alongside 250 PIN codes and unlimited eKeys, so a multi-tenancy building or small commercial site is well within its capacity.
How does the Bluetooth eKey work, and how far away does it reach?
An eKey is a permission sent to another person's McGrath Locks App - permanent, timed or one-off - so they can unlock over Bluetooth when their phone is within range of the lock (typically a few metres, less through a heavy door). No internet is needed at the door. eKeys and the Bluetooth-only vs gateway comparison explain what does and does not need a gateway.
Where is the key override, and what do I do if I lose the keys?
The override cylinder sits in the external handle assembly and is designed to be discreet - where the keyhole is on smart locks explains what to look for. Two keys are supplied. Spares are cut by a locksmith from the Windsor / Albion key blank; if all keys are lost, fit a replacement keyed-to-differ cylinder (2 new keys) or, for several McGrath locks on one key, the keyed-alike cylinder. Keep the spare outside the house.

Locking, Security and Safety

What is passage mode, and when would I use it?
Passage mode holds the Windsor unlocked so the door can be pushed open freely without a credential - useful for an office during trading hours, a clinic waiting room or a function at home. Switch it on from the app, or at the keypad by entering a valid code and then 123# within 5 seconds; take it off by unlocking with a valid code or card (if you engaged it from the app, disengage it from the app). Remember to take it off passage at close of business. Passage mode is a different thing from the holdback function on mechanical digital locks.
What happens after several wrong PIN attempts?
Five wrong codes or cards in a row lock the keypad for 35 seconds, and during that window only the app can operate the lock. It stops anyone from working through codes by trial and error. This is a genuine hardware alarm - not to be confused with the platform's Tamper Alert toggle, which McGrath hardware does not support. Tamper Alert vs incorrect-PIN alarm sets the two apart.
Why does the app show a Tamper Alert option if the Windsor does not have one?
The McGrath Locks App is built on TTLock, and the Tamper Alert switch is a platform-wide legacy item. There is no vibration sensor in current McGrath models, so enabling it produces phantom alerts. Leave it off; if it is already on, turn it off in three steps, and read if alerts continue after disabling. The same advice applies to every lock in the McGrath / Lockton / Austyle suppression cohort.
What does 'reset button can be disabled' mean?
The physical reset button on the interior unit can be turned off from the app, so nobody inside the premises can factory-reset the lock and wipe its users - a sensible step on a rental, a shared office or an NDIS property. Disable it only once you are sure the admin phone is backed up: with the button off, a lost admin account is recovered through McGrath support rather than at the lock.
Does the Windsor keep a record of who came and went?
Yes. Every unlock event - PIN, card, eKey or key override - is stamped with the credential and time and shown in the app's records. Without a gateway the records sync to your phone the next time it connects over Bluetooth; with a gateway they upload to the cloud as they happen. Audit trails for dispute resolution explains why this matters for rentals and shared premises.
How secure is the platform, and where is my data stored?
The McGrath Locks App is a McGrath-branded build of TTLock with Australian-based support. Local unlocking runs over encrypted Bluetooth; cloud features run on TTLock's infrastructure. We publish the platform's known vulnerabilities openly in Chapter 14 - security considerations, set out where each smart lock platform hosts its data, and explain why a Bluetooth-only install keeps the cloud question moot. Australia's new smart-device security law is covered in Chapter 11 - cyber security.

Do I need a gateway, and what does it actually add?
Not for everyday use. Without a gateway the Windsor works fully over Bluetooth - PIN, RFID, eKeys, records and settings - whenever you are at the door. A McGrath gateway connects the lock to the internet so you can unlock remotely, issue or revoke codes from anywhere, get instant notifications and link a booking platform. Start with do you actually need a gateway? and what a gateway does.
Which McGrath gateway should I choose for the Windsor?
For most homes the G5 dual-band Wi-Fi gateway - it joins 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz networks and avoids the band-steering problem that trips up single-band units. Choose the G4 where the property has patchy Wi-Fi or none at all - it carries a 4G SIM slot as a fallback (remote and holiday homes). Choose the G3 PoE gateway for a commercial site with a wired network and an IT department (IT-managed sites). Power any of them from the 240V dual-USB wall adaptor. The full G2 / G3 / G4 / G5 comparison is in our blog.
Where should the gateway sit, and how many locks can one run?
Within reliable Bluetooth range of the lock - ideally the same room or the next one, avoiding brick, concrete and steel between the two (gateway placement, where to position the gateway). One gateway can serve several McGrath locks that are within its range, so a Windsor on the front door and an Albion on the garage door can share one unit; each gateway page lists its compatible locks.
My gateway keeps dropping offline - what is wrong?
Nearly always band steering: a router that merges 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name pushes a 2.4 GHz-only gateway off the network. The tell is that Bluetooth access at the door keeps working while remote access fails. Band steering explained, how to improve stability and the hardware fix (a G5) cover it; also check the batteries first using the low-battery diagnostic. Chapter 13 Q11 has the short version.
Can I use the Windsor for an Airbnb or short-stay property?
Yes, and with a gateway it can be automated. The lock's timed and one-time codes suit guest turnover; add a gateway and a property-management platform and codes are created and expired automatically from bookings - see PMS platforms that integrate with TTLock and Airbnb and PMS integration in Chapter 14. Whether you need Wi-Fi at all is answered in which Airbnb smart lock setup is right for you; Chapter 07 covers what happens if Wi-Fi drops during a stay. If the property is a fire-rated apartment door, the Windsor is one of the few app-managed locks that can go on it.

Fire Doors and Compliance

What exactly does 'fire assessed up to 2 hours' mean?
The Windsor has been assessed as part of a tested doorset on Firecore and E-Core fire door cores and performs for up to two hours in that configuration. The rating belongs to the whole system - door leaf, frame, latch or mortice, lock and installation method - not to the lock on its own, so it applies only when the approved latch or mortice is used and the doorset's own Fire Resistance Level allows it. AS 1905.1 fire door hardware certification and the fire door compliance summary explain the system-based approach; the certificates are in the Fire Cert Docs tab and indexed at Fire-Rated Smart Lock Certification.
Which latch or mortice keeps the fire rating valid?
Three approved paths: the supplied McGrath 60/70mm adjustable tubular latch (spares in Black and Stainless Steel, both themselves fire rated), the dormakaba MS2602 mortice lock, or a Lockwood 530-style tubular latch. Do not substitute an unrated latch from the hardware store - why you cannot just swap the lock explains the consequence. Note the Windsor / Albion scar plates are not fire rated; on a fire door, discuss any cover plate with your installer.
How do I know if my apartment door is a fire door, and what core is it?
In Queensland the entry door of most units is a fire door. Look for the metal compliance tag on the hinge edge or top of the door - it names the manufacturer, core type and FRL. How to identify a fire door and the fire door core types (E-Core, Firecore, Pyropanel) are in Chapter 05. The Windsor is assessed for Firecore and E-Core; if your tag says something else, ask us before ordering.
Can I add a deadbolt above the Windsor on an apartment fire door?
Usually not. Fire door certification typically allows one lock penetration, so a second lock or a door viewer breaks the rating - the one-penetration principle and why deadbolts are not compliant on apartment fire doors spell it out. The compliant route is to upgrade the primary lock - which is what fitting a Windsor does.
Is there an asbestos risk when drilling an older fire door?
There can be. Some fire door cores manufactured before 1990, and a small run of later doors, contain asbestos, and drilling a new lock preparation disturbs it. Terry's checks the tag and door before any cutting. Read the three confirmed risk windows, whether post-1990 doors are asbestos-free and what to do next; Chapter 11 summarises the Queensland asbestos regulations.
Do I need body corporate approval before fitting a Windsor to my unit door?
Yes, in almost every strata scheme - the door is usually common property and the body corporate is responsible for its fire compliance. Put the request in writing with the Windsor's fire assessment and the approved configuration you intend to use. Body corporate approval comes first and the four strata checks walk through it.
What does DDA compliance require, and does the Windsor meet it out of the box?
AS 1428.1-2009 requires a lever that can be operated with a closed fist or without tight grasping, mounted within a set height band. The standard Windsor lever does not claim compliance; fitting the optional external DDA handle (Black / Satin Nickel) with the matching internal handles (Black pair / Satin Nickel) makes the lock compliant. AS 1428.1 explained, the DDA and Premises Standards and what AS 1428.1 compliance actually means give the detail. For NDIS participants, assistive technology funding may apply.

Fit, Door Preparation and Handing

What backset does the Windsor need?
60 mm or 70 mm - the supplied McGrath tubular latch adjusts between the two, which covers nearly every Australian timber and aluminium hinged door. Measure from the door edge to the centre of the existing spindle hole: how to measure your backset and standard Australian backset sizes. A 127 mm backset door needs a different latch - talk to us. Chapter 02 - backset has the diagram.
Will it fit my door thickness?
The Windsor suits doors from 35 mm to 54 mm thick. Most Australian entry doors are 35 to 45 mm and apartment fire doors are commonly 40 to 45 mm, so the range covers them comfortably. Thicker feature doors need a longer spindle and through-bolts - ask us before ordering. Door thickness in Chapter 02 shows how to measure.
Is the Windsor handed? Can it be changed on site?
The Windsor is field-changeable, so one unit suits a left- or right-hand door and the lever is set during installation - there is no handed version to order. Understanding how to determine your door's handing still helps when you order DDA levers or discuss the job with an installer, and field-reversible vs fixed handing explains why this matters more on some other brands.
I am replacing an old lockset - will the Windsor cover the holes?
The Windsor's 180 x 72 mm case covers a standard cylindrical or knob-set preparation. Where a longer plate, a second hole or drill damage is exposed, fit the matching 210 x 90 mm scar plates in Matt Black or Satin Stainless (box of 2, one per face). What a scar plate is and when you need one are in our scar plate guide; Chapter 02 helps you identify existing door hardware.
Can the Windsor go on a French door pair or a rebated door?
Yes with a mortice configuration - the McGrath 147 mm rebate kit adapts a 60/50 mortice lock for a rebated meeting stile. On a plain tubular-latch door no kit is needed. Our rebate kits and strikes category has the options, and a free site survey is the quickest way to confirm.
What door types is it NOT suitable for?
The Windsor is a lever lock for hinged timber or aluminium doors with a standard stile. It is not for sliding doors, hinged security screen doors (see the security screen category), fully exposed gates (its IP65 covers the outside handle only - see external gate locks), frameless glass, or narrow-stile aluminium shopfronts - for those use the slimline range such as the McGrath A210 or A231. Check the door type compatibility matrix.
Which finish holds up better near the coast?
McGrath salt-spray tests the Matt Black finish to 300 hours and the Satin Nickel finish to 96 hours, so on a beachfront or canal-front door the black powder coat is the more corrosion-resistant choice. Either way the IP65 rating covers the external housing only, and salt air is excluded from most lock warranties - read coastal environments, corrosion resistance grades and coastal Queensland lifespan before choosing.

Power and Batteries

Which batteries, and how long do they last?
Four AA alkaline batteries - Terry's recommends Duracell - lasting up to 18 months at roughly ten uses a day (McGrath's figure; standby draw is under 30mA). Do not use lithium or rechargeable AA cells; their voltage curve confuses the low-battery warning. Choosing batteries, battery life - the truth, not the marketing version and power and battery FAQs give the realistic picture. Batteries are not included.
What happens when the batteries go flat?
You get warnings first - in the app and audibly at the lock, each time you wake the keypad once the pack drops below about 4.8V. If you ignore them and the lock is completely dead, hold a USB-C power bank to the emergency port on the outside unit to wake it and unlock, then change the batteries; or simply use the mechanical key. Your codes, cards and eKeys survive a battery change. What to do when the battery dies and what happens in a power outage have the detail.
Remote unlock stopped working but the keypad is fine - flat batteries or gateway?
Remote functions fail before local ones when batteries run down, because the lock stops advertising to the gateway to save power, so this pattern can be either. Check the battery level in the app first, then the gateway's Wi-Fi. The four-case low-battery diagnostic and battery management separate the two causes.

Installation and Setup

Can I install the Windsor myself?
On an ordinary non-fire timber door with an existing 60 or 70 mm cylindrical preparation, a competent DIYer can, using the drill template and the User & Installation Guide (PDF). On a fire-rated door, a mortice conversion, an aluminium door or a DDA installation we strongly recommend a locksmith, because the approved configuration and the certification depend on the fit. When DIY is appropriate - and when it isn't has the table; Terry's offers supply and installation across the Gold Coast.
The handle turns but the door does not lock or unlock properly - what did I miss?
Almost always one of three things: the spindle in the wrong position, the wrong backset or latch, or a misaligned door that binds the latch. The three most common DIY installation mistakes and Mistake 1 - handle still opens when locked cover the fixes; door misalignment is also the number-one cause of motor strain and short battery life.
How do I set the lock up in the app for the first time?
Download the McGrath Locks App, create an account, put the batteries in, and add the lock while standing next to it with Bluetooth on - the app finds it and makes your phone the administrator. Then set an admin PIN, enrol the two supplied RFID tags, and add family or staff as eKeys or codes. Adding a gateway is a separate step done afterwards. One important warning from McGrath's user guide: if you program the lock manually from the printed keypad codes instead of the app, you cannot add a Bluetooth device afterwards - so always set up through the app first. The TTLock App User Manual walks through every screen, and clock calibration is worth doing on a Bluetooth-only install.
I am selling the property or changing tenants - how do I hand the lock over?
Do it in the app, not by factory reset at the door: issue the erase code or delete every user, remove the lock (and gateway) from your account, collect the RFID tags, and let the new owner add the lock fresh. The five-step handover checklist and transferring or re-adding a lock cover it, including the erase code.
Can I program the Windsor from the keypad without the app?
Yes - McGrath prints a full set of keypad programming sequences on the user guide (add an administrator with *12#, add a PIN or RFID user with *80#, modify with *10# / *12#, delete with *72#, *71# or *69#, voice on or off with *30#, and a hard reset by holding the reset button then entering 000#). But McGrath strongly recommends setting the lock up through the McGrath Locks App instead, because a lock programmed manually from the keypad cannot have a Bluetooth device added afterwards. Use the keypad codes for day-to-day changes only once the app owns the lock. The full sheet is the Windsor User & Installation Guide (PDF).

Choosing Between the Windsor and Its Siblings

Windsor or Albion - what is the difference?
The McGrath Albion is the same standard-stile, touchscreen, 4-in-1 lock on the same 60/70 mm latch platform and shares the Windsor's DDA levers, cylinders, key blank and scar plates - but it is not fire assessed. If the door is a fire door, or might become one (a unit entry, a garage-to-house door), choose the Windsor; if it is an ordinary internal or residential door, the Albion does the same job. Chapter 09 profiles the Albion in a DDA context.
Windsor, Stafford, Bardon or Hamilton - which McGrath fire-rated lock do I want?
All four are fire assessed on the same McGrath platform. The Windsor has a tempered-glass touchscreen and optional DDA levers. The Stafford swaps the glass for raised physical buttons and includes the DDA levers as standard. The Bardon adds Braille to the raised buttons for vision-impaired users and is sold without a mortice. The Hamilton (Satin Nickel) adds a fingerprint reader and ships with DDA levers. Chapter 05 profiles the Hamilton for fire doors; the McGrath brand card sets out the whole range.
Is there a cheaper fire-rated option?
Yes - the Carbine CEL2-3IN1 fire-rated leverset (also in Satin Nickel) gives PIN, RFID and key override on a fire-rated lever without an app or gateway, at a lower price. You give up the eKeys, remote access, timed codes and audit trail that the Windsor's app provides. The Carbine CEL and CDL buyer's guide explains the range.
Is there a higher-spec fire-rated option?
The Lockton Cadell52 Fire Rated Smart Lock - 60mm Mortice is the step up: a heavy-commercial mortice lock with a clutching lever, fingerprint reader, IP66 on both handles and a DDA lever as standard, on the same TTLock platform, so your McGrath gateway and app knowledge carry across (cross-brand gateway interchangeability). It costs more and needs a mortice preparation rather than a tubular latch.
Which app platform is right for me?
The Windsor runs on TTLock via the McGrath Locks App - the platform we recommend for fire doors, DDA housing, commercial sites and rentals. Fire-rated door applications, NDIS and disability housing and five questions that decide it compare the four platforms; Chapter 15 - choosing the right platform has the scenario table, and TTLock vs Tuya explains why we stock TTLock and not Tuya.

Warranty, Lifespan and Support

What warranty does the Windsor carry, and who handles claims?
24 months against defects in materials and workmanship (the Windsor is one of McGrath's 24-month models), handled by McGrath's Australian-based support team with Terry's as your first point of contact. Batteries, misuse and normal wear are excluded, and your Australian Consumer Law rights apply regardless. See Returns & Warranty and warranty as a confidence signal.
How long should I expect a Windsor to last?
McGrath durability-tests the Windsor to 300,000 cycles - at ten operations a day that is over 80 years of mechanical life, so the practical limits are electronics, batteries and environment rather than the mechanism. With a well-aligned door, a sheltered position and batteries changed when warned, a quality electronic lock gives many years of service - the platform and the supply chain behind it matter as much as the hardware. Realistic lifespan expectations, installation quality and what happens if the manufacturer discontinues the app are worth reading; the LSC supply chain is why we are comfortable recommending McGrath long term.

McGrath Locks ML Windsor Fire Rated

Posted by Peter on 4th Feb 2025

I was searching for a digital locks that can be installed on apartment unit's entry door, however the hurdles of fire rating (annual compliance) was an ongoing barrier. The McGrath Windsor digital lock was the only unit which had fire rating compliance and the added features which suited my needs. Very happy with the product (quality and software features) and a shout-out to the seller Terry's Gold Coast Smart Locks, as their post-purchse support was awesome. They even made sure after I had received my order, that I was happy with my purchase and asked if I had any enquiries. Great after sales support is always a big plus! I would highly recommend the product and even more on the Seller. The product's battery life is still uncertain, but the user can always check the battery level via the app, only time will tell on the duration of the battery and the durability of the product. But so far so good.
