Borg Mechanical Digital BL5101 – Knob Keypad Back-to-Back – Satin Chrome & Satin Stainless
The Borg BL5101 is a fully mechanical digital lock in a knob/knob back-to-back (BTB) configuration. Both sides of the door have an identical knob keypad — enter the code and rotate the knob to retract the latch. The operating experience is symmetric and identical on each side. Each keypad has an independent coding chamber, allowing each side to be set to a different code if required.
The knob format on both sides makes this the most compact BTB configuration in the BL5000 series — useful where lever handles would protrude too far or create a clearance issue with walls, frames, or adjacent furniture. Code required to open from either direction; no free inside egress. Fire rated to AS 1905.1-2005 (up to 4 hours). Fully mechanical — no batteries. Available in Satin Chrome (BL5101SC) and Satin Stainless (BL5101SS).
Special Order (call for estimated dispatch times)
The BL5101 has a knob keypad on both sides. Both sides are identical in function and appearance. Operating sequence on both sides: enter the correct code on the keypad, then rotate the knob to retract the latch. This is the most compact BTB option in the BL5000 series, as knob handles have a smaller radial projection than lever handles. A code must be entered from whichever side you are on.
Each knob keypad has its own independent coding chamber. Both sides can share the same code, or each side can be set to a completely different code. This allows access from one direction to be controlled independently from the other.
The inside knob keypad requires the correct PIN before the knob retracts the latch. Confirm this suits your application and complies with any applicable fire egress or building regulations before purchasing.
Successfully tested up to 4 hours (depending on doorset) on fire door assemblies in accordance with AS 1905.1-2005 Fire Resistant Doorsets.
Tumbler-based code system. To change the PIN on either side, that side's keypad must be removed. Remove the 4 red screws, lift the cover plate carefully (springs attached), hold the C tumbler depressed, then use the supplied tweezers to reposition the red (coded) and blue (uncoded) tumblers. Over 8,000 combinations; code length adjustable 3–7 digits. Each side is changed independently.
After entering the correct code and rotating the knob, press F to engage free passage mode on that side. The knob becomes free-turning without requiring code entry. To exit: rotate the knob and press C until an audible click is heard. Free passage is independent per side and permanently deactivatable with the included plug.
Entirely mechanical. No power source, no wiring, and no battery maintenance at any point.
For heavy duty: consider the Borg BL7701, Lockwood DX, or Carbine CDL7000.
Each knob keypad accepts one active PIN code at a time. Each side can be set to a different code independently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose knob/knob over lever/lever (BL5051)?
The BL5101 knob keypads have a smaller radial projection from the door face compared to the BL5051 lever keypads. This makes the BL5101 better suited where clearance is limited — for example where the door opens close to a wall, partition, or adjacent fixture. The knob format also provides a symmetric, identical appearance and operation on both sides, which can be preferred in applications where the same user experience is needed regardless of direction. If clearance is not an issue and ergonomic lever operation is preferred, the BL5051 lever/lever may be the better choice.
How do I change the PIN code?
The code must be changed with the relevant side's keypad removed from the door. Remove the 4 red screws, carefully lift the cover plate (springs are attached), hold the C tumbler depressed at all times, then use the supplied tweezers to reposition the red (coded) and blue (uncoded) tumblers. All square cut-outs must face outward; coloured marks must face upward. Each side is changed independently. Test the new code before reinstalling. The code is non-sequential — the buttons can be pressed in any order.
Can each side have a different code?
Yes. Each knob keypad has its own independent coding chamber. Change the tumblers in each side separately to set different codes. Both sides can also share the same code if preferred — set both chambers to identical tumbler configurations.
How does free passage work on each side?
Enter the correct code on one side and rotate the knob, then press F while the knob is still engaged. That side's knob becomes free-turning. To exit free passage: rotate the knob and press C until an audible click is heard. Each side is independent — engaging free passage on one side does not affect the other.
What is the difference between BL5101SC and BL5101SS?
Both are satin finish knob/knob BTB locks with identical specifications, operating mechanism, and fire rating. The BL5101SC has a satin chrome (PVD) finish; the BL5101SS has a satin stainless (PVD) finish. Neither is suitable for coastal or saline environments. Select the finish that best complements your door and interior hardware.
Is this lock fire rated?
Yes. The BL5101 is fire rated to AS 1905.1-2005 for use on fire door assemblies (up to 4 hours depending on the doorset). When specifying for a fire door, confirm all other hardware is also fire rated and compatible. Also confirm that requiring code entry to exit from inside complies with emergency egress requirements for your specific fire door application and occupancy classification.
Additional Information
For the tumbler code system, codes can be set on or off the door. Set and verify both side codes on the bench before installation. This avoids removing a fitted keypad for the first code change and lets you confirm both sides operate correctly before mounting.
Two spindles are supplied (80mm and 90mm). Use the longest that fits. General rule: door thickness + 30mm = minimum spindle length (15mm must seat into each keypad). For a 44mm door, the spindle should be at least 74mm. Do not cut the spindle shorter than necessary. A short spindle may disengage if the door is slammed, locking users out.
Both sides require code entry on the BL5101. Confirm this complies with emergency egress requirements for your specific fire door application. In escape routes, requiring code entry from inside to exit may conflict with occupancy regulations. Confirm with your fire door certifier or building surveyor before specifying for a fire door on an egress route.
All Borg locks are warranted against mechanical defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and service for a minimum of 12 months from date of sale. The warranty does not cover damage arising from misuse, vandalism, or improper installation. The lock must not be dismantled — doing so will invalidate the warranty.
