Yale Unity Slim Heavy Duty Magnet Housing Assembly - Black

The Yale Unity Slim Heavy Duty Magnet Housing Assembly (part number YURSSL-STRIKE-02) is a jamb-mounted plastic housing that carries the magnet read by the door position sensor on the Yale Unity Slim Smart Lock. It is a service and installation part, supplied in a trade pack, and is not a lock or a strike in its own right.

Its purpose is narrow and specific. The Unity Slim uses a door position sensor built into the lock body to tell whether the door is genuinely closed before it will auto-lock or report status in the Yale Home app. That sensor needs a magnet sitting directly opposite it on the frame. Where the existing strike cannot carry the magnet in the right place, or where the lock is being retrofitted into a frame that already has serviceable strike hardware, this housing mounts the magnet separately at the correct height.

The housing is manufactured from plastic, is non-handed so a single part covers both left and right hand doors, and is made in New Zealand alongside the rest of the Unity Slim range. It is designed to be used in conjunction with an existing strike rather than replacing one, which is what makes it the natural choice in retrofit work.

Fitting and Compatibility

Fitting Notes
  • Fit the housing to the door frame so the magnet sits directly opposite the door position sensor in the lock body. Alignment across the gap is what the sensor reads, so height matters more than depth.
  • Mark the sensor height on the frame with the door closed before drilling, rather than measuring from the top of the door.
  • Use the slotted fixings to make the final adjustment. Snug the fixings, close the door, confirm the lock reports a closed door, then tighten fully.
  • This part is fitted alongside the existing strike, not instead of it. Confirm the strike is sound and correctly aligned before adding the magnet housing.
  • The housing is non-handed, so no left or right hand selection is required.

What does this part actually do?
It holds the magnet that the Yale Unity Slim uses to detect whether the door is closed. The lock has a door position sensor in its body; the sensor needs a magnet sitting opposite it in the frame. This housing mounts that magnet on the frame at the correct height. It is not a strike, does not retain the door and adds no security by itself.
Does it replace my existing strike?
No. Yale specifies it for use in conjunction with an existing strike, which is exactly why it suits retrofit work - the strike already in the frame stays where it is and only the sensor magnet gets positioned. If the strike itself is worn or wrong, order the Unity Slim Stainless Steel Plate Strike Assembly instead.
Do I need a left hand or right hand version?
No. The housing is non-handed, so one part number covers both. That also means it can be reused if a door is rehung the other way. Handing on the Unity Slim itself is a different question and is set at install; see Chapter 02 - Measuring Your Door for how handing is described in Australia.
My Unity Slim keeps saying the door is open when it is closed. Is this the fix?
It can be, if the cause is the magnet sitting too far from the sensor or at the wrong height. Check alignment first, then the door to jamb gap. If the gap is the problem, a strike packer may be the better answer. Door misalignment is one of the three most common causes of smart lock faults - see Smart Lock Not Locking? 3 Common DIY Mistakes.
Will it suit a coastal installation?
The housing is plastic, so it will not corrode or pit the way a metal part can in salt air, and it is non-conductive against an aluminium frame. Yale publishes no IP rating for this part specifically, and the Unity Slim's own IP55 rating applies to the lock's external module rather than to jamb hardware. Additional Information

  • Order the whole retrofit kit together, not one part at a time. A Unity Slim going into an existing frame typically needs some combination of this magnet housing, a strike packer, the screw pack and a retrofit scar plate kit to cover previous hardware marks. Working out the list before the van leaves saves a second visit.
  • The door position sensor is not a convenience feature on this lock. Auto-lock and door status in the Yale Home app both depend on it. If the sensor cannot see the magnet, the lock behaves as though the door is permanently ajar, which is why a correctly positioned magnet is worth getting right rather than approximating.
  • Auto-lock on a multipoint lock is not the same as full locking. On the Unity Slim, auto-lock secures the latch; the shoot bolts only throw when the handle is lifted. Do not assume a correctly reading sensor means the multipoint bolts are engaged. The Unity Slim page explains lift-to-lock in detail.
  • Frame gap has a security and battery-life consequence, not just a sensor one. A door that sits proud or drags makes the lock work harder every cycle. Chapter 12 covers this under symptom-to-fix troubleshooting, and it is worth resolving before blaming the lock.

Unity Slim Magnet Housing - Fitting, Troubleshooting and Owner's Guide

What this part is

What is a magnet housing assembly on a smart lock?
It is a small frame-mounted carrier for the magnet a lock uses to sense whether the door is shut. Locks with a door position sensor - Yale calls this DoorSense on some models - compare the presence of that magnet against the bolt state to work out whether the door is actually closed or simply locked into fresh air. On the Unity Slim the sensor lives in the lock body, so the magnet has to be in the frame directly opposite it.
Why is it called "heavy duty" if it is plastic?
The heavy duty label distinguishes it from the lighter magnet arrangement integrated into a standard strike. It is a thicker, self-supporting housing that stands on its own fixings rather than relying on the strike body. Plastic is a deliberate choice for this application: it will not corrode against an aluminium frame, and it does not interfere magnetically the way a ferrous housing can.
How does YURSSL-STRIKE-02 differ from YURSSL-STRIKE-01?
They do different jobs despite the sequential part numbers. YURSSL-STRIKE-01 is the stainless steel plate strike assembly - the part the bolt actually enters. YURSSL-STRIKE-02, this product, is the magnet housing that serves the door position sensor. A new installation generally uses the strike assembly; a retrofit keeping the original strike generally uses this housing.

Fitting and alignment

How do I find the right height on the frame?
Work from the lock, not from the door edge. Close the door, mark the vertical position of the lock body's sensor onto the frame, then centre the housing on that mark. Measuring down from the top of the door introduces error from any sag or out-of-square in the frame, which is exactly the condition that causes sensor faults in the first place.
What are the fixing centres?
The drawing gives a round fixing hole centred 18mm from the top of the 66mm housing, with two elongated slots below it. The slots are 4.5mm across and the upper one measures 11mm in length, which is the adjustment range you have once the top fixing is set. Overall the housing is 14.8mm wide and 10mm deep. Those are the only fixing dimensions Yale prints on the drawing and no others should be assumed.
What is the correct fitting sequence?
Fit or confirm the strike first, then the magnet housing. Set the top fixing, leave the slotted fixings snug rather than tight, close the door and check the lock reports a closed door. Adjust on the slots until it reads reliably from a normal close rather than a firm push, then tighten fully and re-test. Testing with the door pulled hard against the seal gives a false pass.
Does the gap between the door and the frame matter?
Yes, and it is the most common reason a correctly positioned magnet still fails to read. A magnetic sensor has a working range; too wide a gap puts the magnet outside it. Excess gap also strains the motor on every cycle and shortens battery life. Measuring the gap is part of pre-order checks - see Chapter 02 on door preparation and the misalignment section of Chapter 12.
Can I just glue or tape the magnet to the frame instead?
It will work briefly and then fail. Adhesive-mounted magnets creep under door slam and heat, and a magnet that drifts a few millimetres puts the lock into a permanent door-ajar state that owners usually blame on the app. The housing exists so the magnet is mechanically fixed and repeatably positioned.

Troubleshooting the door position sensor

The lock says the door is open when it is shut. What do I check first?
In order: is the magnet vertically opposite the sensor; is the door-to-frame gap within normal range; has the housing shifted on its slots; and has anything metal been added near the sensor. Only after those four should the lock itself be suspected. Nine times out of ten the fault is geometric, not electronic.
Why does a misreading sensor drain the batteries?
Because the lock keeps reporting a state change and, depending on settings, keeps re-evaluating whether it can auto-lock. A door the lock believes is permanently ajar also generates repeat notifications. Neither is catastrophic on its own, but both eat into the Unity Slim's expected battery life. The Unity Slim battery and power section covers what normal consumption looks like.
The magnet reads fine but the door still will not auto-lock. Why?
On a multipoint lock, auto-lock and full multipoint engagement are two different things. Lifting the handle is what throws the shoot bolts. A sensor reading correctly confirms the door is closed - it does not confirm the bolts are thrown. This catches out owners moving from a single-point lock and is explained on the Unity Slim multipoint locking section.

Ordering and compatibility

Will it fit a Yale Unity Entrance or Unity Security Screen Door lock?
No. Despite the shared Unity name, the escutcheon, mortice and jamb hardware differ across those ranges. This part is published only against the Unity Slim. The Unity Entrance and the Unity Security Screen Door lock each have their own strike arrangements.
What else should go on the same order for a retrofit?
Most Unity Slim retrofits need more than one jamb-side item. The usual companions are the strike packer in 2mm or 3mm for gap correction, the screw pack, and the retrofit scar plate kit in 42mm or 58mm to cover marks left by previous hardware.
Is this a genuine Yale part?
Yes. It is a Yale-published Unity Slim trade pack part, made in New Zealand with the rest of the range, supplied through authorised Australian distribution and covered by the Yale warranty. Terry's handles warranty claims locally.

Claims made directly to ASSA ABLOY require a Case Number from their Customer Service Department before goods are returned - products sent back without a Case Number may not be accepted. Costs of returning a product are the customer's responsibility.

Important Notes

Batteries, finishes and stainless steel
Batteries are consumable and are not covered. Cosmetic finishes and appearance are excluded. Stainless steel resists staining but is not stain-proof - tea staining is a natural process and is not covered where cleaning and maintenance guidelines have not been followed.
Coastal and corrosive environments
Damage from salt spray, coastal air, high humidity and other corrosives is excluded. In Gold Coast and coastal locations, choose a suitable finish and follow the care and maintenance guidance to protect your hardware and preserve your cover.
