Yale Unity Slim Screw Pack - Spindles, Screws and Spring - Black

The Yale Unity Slim Screw Pack (part number YURSSL-SCRP-01) holds the spindles, machine screws, compression spring and latch parts that join the internal and external escutcheons of a Yale Unity Slim Smart Lock through the door stile. It is a service and installation part, and it is the pack you order when a fixing is lost, damaged or the wrong length for the door.

The pack is deliberately over-supplied. It carries two spindle lengths and three screw lengths, and the installer selects the set that matches the door. A single Unity Slim installation uses one spindle, one pair of machine screws and the compression spring; everything else in the pack stays as spares. Between them, the supplied combinations cover doors from 35mm to 60mm thick, which is the Unity Slim's own published fitting range.

Every machine screw in the pack is stainless steel, and all use a combination square and Phillips drive so either bit will engage. The pack also includes a latch wear insert and a 2mm latch packer, which is why it is worth having on the van rather than only ordering it after something goes missing.

You will not use all of it on one door
A single installation uses one spindle, one pair of machine screws and the compression spring. The remaining screws and the second spindle are spares for other door thicknesses. That is by design, not an over-supply error.

Suitable Uses

  • Replacing lost or damaged Unity Slim fixings after a service call, a door rehang or a strip-down.
  • Moving a Unity Slim to a door of a different thickness, where the original spindle or screws no longer suit.
  • Correcting an install fitted with the wrong spindle length, which is one of the most common causes of a smart lock that feels stiff or fails to retract cleanly.
  • Installer and locksmith van stock alongside the strike packer, magnet housing and scar plate kit, so a Unity Slim job can be finished in one visit.
  • Property managers and strata maintenance holding a small spares kit against a portfolio of Unity Slim locks.
Not suitable for
This pack is cut for the Yale Unity Slim. The spindle sizes and screw lengths are matched to its escutcheons and lock case, and will not correctly suit the Yale Unity Entrance, the Yale Unity Security Screen Door lock or another brand's lock. It contains no lock, no jamb hardware and no wood screws for fixing a strike.

Door Thickness Selection Guide

Measure the door stile, then pick the row. This is the only decision the pack requires, and getting it right is what determines whether the lock operates smoothly.

Yale's selection guidance names the parts short, medium and long; the pack list gives lengths. The lengths shown in brackets follow ascending order, with the 64mm and 79mm spindles as short and long and the 39mm, 49mm and 59mm screws as short, medium and long. Confirm against the parts in hand before cutting the job short.
Two boundary thicknesses appear in two rows
44mm and 48mm each sit at the join between two rows. Where a door measures exactly on a boundary, take the shorter option first and check the escutcheon pulls down flush without the screw bottoming out. Measure the stile itself, not the door including a weather seal or a previously fitted plate.

Fitting and Compatibility

Fitting Notes
  • Measure the stile before opening the pack. Take the thickness at the lock position, not at the edge or through a glazing bead, then read the selection table above.
  • Add for anything sandwiched behind the escutcheon. A retrofit scar plate kit adds a plate and a gasket on each face, which can push a borderline door into the next row of the table.
  • The spindle should engage fully without bottoming out. A spindle that is too long holds the escutcheons apart and loads the mechanism; too short and the drive is only partly engaged and will eventually round out.
  • Fit the compression spring in every configuration. It appears in all four published combinations, not just the longest.
  • Do not over-tighten the machine screws. They pull the two escutcheons together through the door; excessive torque distorts the escutcheon and can bind the mechanism.
  • Keep the leftovers. The unused spindle and screw pairs are the correct spares for that lock if the door is ever rehung or a plate kit is added later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which screws and spindle to use?
Measure the door stile at the lock position and read the selection table above. There are four published combinations covering 35mm to 60mm. If you are unsure how to take the measurement, Chapter 02 covers door thickness.
Why are there six machine screws when I only need two?
Because one pack has to cover the whole 35mm to 60mm range. You use one pair, matched to your door, and keep the other four as spares. The same applies to the two spindles: one goes in, one stays in the box.
My door is exactly 44mm or 48mm. Which row applies?
Both boundary figures appear in two rows of Yale's guidance. Start with the shorter screw and check the escutcheon draws down flush and the lock operates freely. If the screw bottoms out before the escutcheon seats, step up to the next length. Do not force it.
Can I just use hardware store screws instead?
We would not. These are M4 stainless machine screws in specific lengths, drawing two escutcheons together through a door and holding a lock in alignment. A substitute of the wrong length, thread or material will either bottom out, sit proud, or corrode on an exposed door. The spindle in particular is a drive part, not a fixing, and a generic one will not match.
Will it fit another Yale lock?
No. The spindle lengths and screw sizes are matched to the Unity Slim escutcheons and lock case. The Unity Entrance and the Unity Security Screen Door lock use different hardware and different fixings.

Additional Information

  • The wrong spindle is a leading cause of smart lock complaints. A lock that feels stiff, retracts slowly or works intermittently is very often a spindle length problem rather than a motor or battery problem. See the first of the three common DIY mistakes.
  • A plate kit changes the effective door thickness. Adding the retrofit scar plate kit puts a 0.9mm plate and a 1.6mm gasket on each face. On a door already near a boundary in the selection table, that is enough to move it into the next row.
  • Stainless matters on the Gold Coast. These fixings pass through the full thickness of an external door and are effectively unserviceable once the lock is in. Salt air is the reason Yale specifies stainless here rather than plain plated steel, and it is the reason a generic substitute is a false economy.   • Order it with the lock, not after. If a Unity Slim is going onto a thicker-than-standard door, or onto a door that also needs a plate kit, having this pack on hand at first fit avoids a return visit for the sake of a 10mm difference in screw length.

  • Mechanical parts: 10 years
  • Electrical and electronic components: 3 years (batteries excluded)

These are mechanical parts, so the mechanical term applies. Finishes, cosmetic wear, normal wear and tear, misuse, unauthorised modification and corrosion (including coastal air and salt spray) are excluded. Proof of purchase is required for all claims.

Unity Slim Screw Pack - Selection, Fitting and Troubleshooting

Everything below is specific to the Yale Unity Slim screw pack and the escutcheon fixings it supplies. For the lock itself see the Yale Unity Slim product page, and for general installation faults see Chapter 12 - Installation and Troubleshooting.

Selecting the right parts

Where exactly do I measure the door?
Across the stile at the height the lock sits, with the door open, using a rule or vernier on the bare timber or aluminium. Do not measure over a weather seal, a previously fitted plate or a bead. If a scar plate kit is going on at the same time, add its plate and gasket thickness to each face before reading the table.
Why does the spindle change at 48mm but the screws change at 44mm?
Because they do two different jobs. The screws clamp the two escutcheons together, so their length tracks the door thickness plus the escutcheon depth. The spindle transmits the handle drive through the lock case, so it steps up only when the door gets deep enough that the shorter spindle no longer engages fully at both ends. That is why the four published combinations mix and match rather than stepping up together.
What are the two small 8g screws for?
They are the countersunk truncated screws in the pack, a different type from the six long M4 machine screws. They are not part of the four door-thickness combinations, which use only a spindle, a pair of machine screws and the spring. Keep them with the lock's own fixings.

Fitting

How tight should the escutcheon screws be?
Firm and even, then stop. These screws pull two escutcheons together through the door, so there is nothing to bottom out against except the escutcheons themselves. Over-tightening bows the escutcheon, pinches the lock case and can leave a mechanism that binds or a motor that draws more current than it should on every cycle.
Do I need a square drive bit?
No. The heads take a combination square and Phillips drive, so a standard Phillips bit works. A square bit will hold the screw more securely on a vertical door face if you have one, which is useful when you are feeding a long screw blind through a stile.
What does the compression spring do?
It is used in all four published door-thickness combinations, so it goes in regardless of door depth. If a lock has been apart and the spring has gone missing, this pack is the correct way to replace it rather than substituting a generic spring of approximate rate.

Troubleshooting

The handle feels stiff or the latch is sluggish. Is it the spindle?
Very often, yes. A spindle that is too long holds the escutcheons apart and preloads the mechanism; one that is too short only partially engages the drive and will wear or round out over time. Check the spindle against the door thickness before suspecting the motor or the batteries. Chapter 12 lists this under wrong spindle position.
Could a fixing problem be draining the batteries?
Indirectly, yes. Anything that makes the mechanism work harder on every cycle - a preloaded spindle, an over-tightened escutcheon, a door that drags on the frame - increases the current the motor draws each time. If battery life is well short of expectation, check the mechanical fit before assuming a fault. The Unity Slim battery and power section sets out what normal looks like.
Can I reuse the original screws instead of fitting new ones?
If they are sound, yes. Replace them if the heads are chewed, the thread is damaged, or there is any sign of corrosion - these fixings run right through an external door and are not serviceable once the lock is back together.   4. ASSA ABLOY assesses the claim. Where the warranty applies, they will (at their option) repair the product, replace it with the same or closest equivalent Yale product, or refund the price you paid.

Claims made directly to ASSA ABLOY require a Case Number from their Customer Service Department before goods are returned - products sent back without a Case Number may not be accepted. Costs of returning a product are the customer's responsibility.

Important Notes

Batteries, finishes and stainless steel
Batteries are consumable and are not covered. Cosmetic finishes and appearance are excluded. Stainless steel resists staining but is not stain-proof - tea staining is a natural process and is not covered where cleaning and maintenance guidelines have not been followed.
Coastal and corrosive environments
Damage from salt spray, coastal air, high humidity and other corrosives is excluded. In Gold Coast and coastal locations, choose a suitable finish and follow the care and maintenance guidance to protect your hardware and preserve your cover.
