The McGrath A236 is a slimline 5-in-1 digital smart lock built for narrow-stile aluminium doors and standard timber doors. Its 36mm wide body and the supplied 35mm backset European mortice lock (85mm centres) let it fit door frames where a full-width smart lock simply will not go - if your stile is between 50mm and 70mm, check stile width in Measuring Your Door (Chapter 02) and how to measure your backset before ordering. It is the 36mm hinged-door member of the McGrath slimline range, sitting between the 43mm A210 and the 31mm ultra-slim A231 - the slimline comparison table below shows where each fits.

Every A236 is managed through the McGrath Locks App on the TTLock platform over Bluetooth as standard, and unlocks by keypad PIN, MIFARE RFID credential, fingerprint, Bluetooth eKey, or the mechanical key in the Euro cylinder. Remote unlocking, remote credential management and cloud activity records are added by pairing a McGrath Wi-Fi gateway (sold separately) - what changes when you add a gateway is a short read before you decide whether you need one.

Where the A236 earns its place is the mortice. The supplied body is a Euro mortice with dead-latching and a lift-lever deadbolt from the McGrath 85 Series - 1.5mm SS304 case, SS304 latch and deadbolt, tested to 500,000 cycles - and the same series is stocked in 28, 30, 45, 50, 60 and 70mm backsets, so the lock can be matched to an existing door preparation rather than the door re-cut to suit the lock. Every A236 is an app-enabled smart lock out of the box. Without a gateway it is a smart lock, not a connected one - PIN, fingerprint, RFID and key all work with no internet at all, and what TTLock can do without Wi-Fi covers exactly how far that goes.

What's in the Box

Note: 4 x AAA alkaline batteries are not included - Terry's Locksmiths recommends Duracell, and the truth about smart lock battery life explains why brand matters. The Wi-Fi gateway is sold separately. Alternative 85 Series mortice backsets are available if the supplied 35mm body does not match your door preparation.

Suitable Uses

• Narrow-stile aluminium hinged doors where a full-width lock body will not fit - shopfronts, unit entries, framed glass doors. Measure the stile width and backset first; the door type compatibility matrix confirms aluminium doors are in scope.
• Timber and aluminium front doors in the 38mm to 55mm thickness range - check door thickness against that range before ordering.
• Retrofit onto an existing Euro mortice preparation - the 85 Series body is also sold in 28, 30, 45 and 50mm, 60mm and 70mm backsets, so a door already cut for a Euro lock usually needs no re-machining. Mortice versus bored cylindrical door prep explains the difference.

• Sliding doors: the purpose-built A231 with Hook Bolt is our first recommendation. McGrath also lists the A236 body as compatible with its Euro Hook Mortice - confirm your door with our team before ordering that configuration.
• Not suitable for: external pedestrian gates or fully exposed weather positions - the IP65 rating covers the external face only, not the internal battery unit (for a gate, see the exposed-gate smart lock range); fire doors (no fire test - the fire-rated McGrath models are the Windsor, Stafford, Hamilton and Bardon, see fire door smart locks). On a security screen door, check the screen-to-door clearance - it is the most common screen-door mistake.

Three slimline bodies share the same McGrath 85 Series Euro mortice, the same McGrath Locks App and the same 5-in-1 credential set. The differences that decide the purchase are body width, handle style and the door you are fitting.

Accessories and Spares

Everything below is confirmed to suit the A236 and stocked by Terry's. Mortice bodies are in the mortice locks for smart locks category, override cylinders under cylinders and barrels, blanks under keys and key blanks, credentials under RFID fobs, tags and cards and gateways under modules and Wi-Fi gateways.

Place the gateway within roughly 8 to 10 metres of the lock with as few walls as possible - gateway placement is the usual cause of a lock that "keeps dropping offline". The G-series is interchangeable across TTLock brands, so one gateway can serve a McGrath A236 and a Lockton or Vault lock on the same property.

Battery, Power and Backup Access

4 x AAA Alkaline - Approximately 12 Months
The A236 runs on four AAA alkaline batteries (not included) in the interior unit, operating between 4.5V and 9V. McGrath rates battery life at 12 months based on ten uses a day; a busy family door or an office entry will see less, and what really affects battery life explains why a stiff or misaligned door is the usual culprit rather than the lock. Terry's Locksmiths recommends Duracell and never mixing old and new cells. Like every battery-powered smart lock it is independent of mains power, so a power outage changes nothing at the door.

• Low-battery warning - the lock warns audibly when the battery pack drops below 4.8V, and the McGrath Locks App shows the battery level each time you connect. Change the batteries when warned; the power and battery FAQs cover what to expect.
• USB-C emergency power - a USB-C port on the exterior unit accepts a phone power bank. Plug in, wait a moment, then use your PIN or fingerprint as normal. It is temporary power to get in, not a charger - the batteries still need replacing.
• Mechanical key override - the Euro cylinder in the mortice accepts the two supplied keys at any time, batteries or not. Where the keyhole is, and why the spare key should live outside the house - a McGrath TTLock key safe on the same app is the tidy answer.
• Credentials survive a battery change - PINs, cards, fingerprints and eKeys are stored in the lock and the app, so swapping batteries does not mean re-enrolling anyone.

Wi-Fi Remote Access (Optional Gateway)

No Wi-Fi Built In - Add a McGrath G3, G4 or G5 Gateway
The A236 talks to your phone over Bluetooth 5.0 within roughly 10 metres. A gateway plugged in nearby bridges that Bluetooth link to your internet connection, and from then on you can unlock the door, issue or revoke codes and eKeys, and read the activity log from anywhere. What a gateway does and whether you actually need one are the two questions to settle first - many households never do.

• G5 Wi-Fi Gateway - dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz, our default recommendation for homes on a mesh or combined-band router because it sidesteps the band-steering problem.
• G4 Gateway - 2.4GHz Wi-Fi with a 4G SIM fallback for holiday homes and remote properties where the NBN is not reliable.
• G3 Ethernet Gateway - PoE or USB-C powered, wired only, for offices and IT-managed sites - G3 in Chapter 08.

If the internet drops, PIN, fingerprint, RFID, key and Bluetooth all keep working at the door - only the remote layer pauses (what happens when the internet goes down). A lock that keeps dropping offline is almost always a placement or 2.4GHz issue, not a fault. Gateway setup steps are in the TTLock manual, page 52 (PDF). The G-series works across TTLock brands, so one gateway can also serve a Vault or Lockton lock on the same property.

Dimensions

McGrath's technical sheet gives the case as 320mm high, 36mm wide and 24.3mm deep, with a 58.5mm outside handle projection.

Euro 85 Series mortice bodies - 240mm faceplate, 22mm faceplate width and 85mm centres on every variant; overall case widths 43, 45, 51.5, 61.5, 66.5, 76.5 and 86.5mm for the 28, 30, 35, 45, 50, 60 and 70mm backsets. Frequently Asked Questions

Will the A236 fit my narrow aluminium door?
Very likely, if the stile is 50mm or wider and the door is 38mm to 55mm thick. The lock body is 36mm wide and the supplied Euro mortice has a 35mm backset with 85mm centres. Measure three things before ordering: stile width, backset and door thickness. If the stile is under 50mm, the 31mm A231 is the better fit; if you are unsure, send us a photo of the existing lock.

Does the A236 have built-in Wi-Fi?
No. Bluetooth is built in for local app control; remote unlocking, remote code management and cloud activity records need a G5, G4 or G3 gateway, sold separately. My door already has a Euro mortice with a different backset - can I still use the A236?
Usually yes. The A236 body works with any McGrath 85 Series swing mortice, so if your existing prep is cut for a 28, 30, 45, 50, 60 or 70mm backset you order the matching body from the accessories list instead of re-machining the door. The two things that must match are the 85mm pitch and the 240mm x 22mm faceplate - backset and smart locks covers the checks, and the mortice lever and escutcheon measuring card shows where to take them.

What happens if the batteries go flat?
You will be warned first - an audible alert at the lock below 4.8V and a battery reading in the app. If they do run flat, hold a phone power bank to the USB-C port on the outside unit and use your PIN or fingerprint, or use one of the two mechanical keys in the Euro cylinder. Neither wipes any codes or fingerprints. What to do when the battery dies walks through it, and a key hider or key safe outside means the spare key is there when you need it.

The lock is installed but will not lock - what is wrong?
On a slimline mortice lock this is almost always spindle position, the wrong backset body, or door prep and alignment rather than a faulty lock - the three DIY mistakes are handle still opens when locked, wrong hardware or backset and poor door preparation. Additional Information

• Set the lock up in the app before you do anything else. A new TTLock-platform lock sits in an always-open state until batteries are fitted and an administrator is set in the McGrath Locks App - that is why a freshly fitted lock "won't lock". Add the lock over Bluetooth first (manual page 15), then enrol fingerprints and cards. Pick the app up from the TTLock App User Manual page.
• New PIN codes and the 24-hour rule. A permanent passcode created in the app must be used at the keypad within 24 hours or it lapses - the single most common TTLock support call. How to stop codes expiring and the activation window for each passcode type are worth two minutes before you hand a code to a tenant or cleaner.
• Bluetooth-only installs drift. Without a gateway the lock's clock is only corrected when a phone connects, and a drifted clock makes time-limited codes fail at the keypad. Calibrating without a gateway (manual page 17) takes seconds; a gateway does it automatically.
• Coastal and sheltered positions. The IP65 rating is for the outside unit and means dust-tight with protection against water jets - a covered entry, not a fully exposed door. Salt air is a separate question from rain: read coastal Queensland is not gentle and Queensland-specific considerations, and rinse and wipe the exterior periodically if you are near the beach.
• Selling or re-letting the property? Transfer the lock to the new owner in the app rather than factory-resetting it - the five-step handover checklist and the erase code (manual page 48) cover it. Keyed-alike sites should also change the override cylinder.
