ASSA ABLOY SMARTair Encoder - USB RFID Credential Programmer

The ASSA ABLOY SMARTair Encoder - USB RFID Credential Programmer (STCED3) is a USB-connected desktop encoder for managing the RFID credentials used throughout a SMARTair access control system. Connected to a computer running SMARTair TS1000 or Web Manager software, it reads, writes and updates access permissions on the cards, tags and fobs your users carry (Product Overview).

Administrators use it to create new user credentials, change access rights, cancel lost cards and update credential permissions on Update-on-Card and Wireless Online sites - the SMARTair management levels ASSA ABLOY equips with a card encoder (Product Overview, page 3). Standalone doors are set up with the SMARTair programming cards instead, with no software at all.

With a web encoder licence on the TS1000 server, the same encoder works from the Web Manager in a browser - on the site network, over a VPN or across the internet (Web Encoder manual, pages 2-3) - which suits multisite and remote installations (page 1). The steps are under Credential Encoding Workflow.

Key Features

  • USB-connected SMARTair credential programming device.
  • Used to read and write RFID credentials - it reads, encodes and deletes the SMARTair information on keycards, fobs and wristbands (Product Overview).
  • Compatible with SMARTair management software: TS1000 Client/Server or the Web Manager (Product Overview).
  • Supports credential management for Update-on-Card and Wireless Online systems (Product Overview).
  • Allows secure programming and cancellation of user access cards.
  • Encodes from the Web Manager as well, once the web encoder licence is added (Web Encoder manual).
  • Compact desktop device supplied with a USB connection lead.

What's Included

  • SMARTair RFID credential encoder.
  • USB connection cable.
  • Setup documentation.

Cards, tags and fobs, the TS1000 software licence and the web encoder licence are separate items.

Suitable Uses

Standalone sites: their doors are administered at the door with the SMARTair programming cards and need no software (Information Guide).

SMARTair System Tools and Licences

SMARTair splits set-up and management across a small family of tools and licences. Each one does a different job, on different management levels:

Item code Product What it does Used on
SNACLICSTAIC Standalone Programming Card - iCLASS (Red) The red card: adds and deletes users at Standalone doors Standalone
SNACLICSTASDWIC Standalone Programming Card - iCLASS Shadow The Shadow card: no need to delete all cards if one goes missing Standalone
STCED3 Encoder - USB RFID Credential Programmer (this product) Reads, writes and updates SMARTair RFID credentials Update-on-Card, Wireless Online
STCPCC Portable Programmer Initialises and updates door devices from TS1000 Update-on-Card, Wireless Online, Openow
SNCCLICMOBILE Mobile Access Licence - Openow Openow phone keys, sent and revoked from TS1000 Openow-enabled devices
SNCCLICLOCKDOWN TS1000 Lockdown Upgrade Emergency lockdown from TS1000 Wireless Online

How the SMARTair Encoder is Used

The SMARTair encoder connects directly to the SMARTair management computer and is used to program the RFID credentials issued to users.

  • Create new user cards and tags.
  • Assign access rights and schedules.
  • Cancel or replace lost credentials.
  • Update access permissions for Update-on-Card systems.
  • Read credential information and access data.

In Update-on-Card systems, the encoder writes permission updates directly to the user's RFID credential, which then carries them to SMARTair devices when it's presented at authorised access points. Day to day, users pick up changes at an online updater - ASSA ABLOY recommends installing one at the building's main access points (Product Overview).

Credential Encoding Workflow

  • Encodes physical SMARTair RFID credentials (cards and fobs) directly from the SMARTair Web Manager (Web Encoder manual).
  • No TS1000 client or separate remote encoding software to install: the first time you encode from the Web Manager, the SMARTair Encoder Agent downloads automatically from the cloud (Web Encoder manual) and you install it on that computer - Windows or macOS (pages 5-6).
  • Fast encoding regardless of database size or server connection (Web Encoder manual); works whether the Web Manager runs on the same LAN or over a VPN (page 2), or remotely over plain internet with a fixed public IP or dynamic DNS (page 3).
  • Web encoding is activated on a TS1000 site (version 07.02.01 or higher) with a licence upgrade: SNCCLICWEBENC30 for software licences up to 10 and 30 doors, or SNCCLICWEBENCOD for 75-door and unlimited licences (Web Encoder manual).
  • On the server, the TESA_APPSERVER encoding service must run all the time, and ports 8181 and 8182 must be open - with port forwarding where needed (Web Encoder manual).
  • Connect the encoder before installing the agent (Web Encoder manual). On Windows the agent sits in the notification area (page 7); on macOS it sits in the menu bar, opened the first time with Ctrl + right-click and Open (page 8).
  • Safari users open https://localhost:20809/activate once and enter the computer's administrator details before the agent will work (Web Encoder manual).
  • Writes SMARTair credential technologies including MIFARE Classic and Ultralight, HID iCLASS and DESFire.
  • Ideal for multisite and remote installations where credentials must be issued quickly and consistently.

SMARTair System Compatibility

The encoder is an essential component of SMARTair installations and is used together with the system management software to configure credentials across the access control network.

  • SMARTair TS1000 management software
  • SMARTair Web Manager
  • SMARTair RFID credentials
  • SMARTair escutcheons, cylinders, readers and padlocks

ASSA ABLOY lists the card encoder with the software licence and a portable programmer (or PC-TO-LOCK) for Update-on-Card sites, where an online updater is optional, and for Wireless Online sites, which add SMARTair hubs (Product Overview, page 3).

Compatible SMARTair Devices

The encoder writes the credentials for every Update-on-Card and Wireless Online device we list. Match the card technology to the device - HID iCLASS or MIFARE:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the encoder on a Standalone site?
No. Standalone doors are administered at the door with the programming cards, and no software or specialist equipment is needed (Information Guide). The encoder comes in when the site moves to Update-on-Card.
Can I encode from the Web Manager, off site?
Yes, once the TS1000 server (version 07.02.01 or higher) carries the web encoder licence (Web Encoder manual), the TESA_APPSERVER encoding service is running and ports 8181 and 8182 are open (page 4). It works on the site network or over a VPN (page 2), or over plain internet with a fixed public IP or dynamic DNS (page 3).
Which cards and fobs can it encode?
It writes SMARTair credential technologies including MIFARE Classic and Ultralight, HID iCLASS and DESFire. Match the credential to the doors: each device's card technology is in Compatible SMARTair Devices. Not sure what your cards are? Send us a sample and we'll check it.
Does Web Manager encoding work on a Mac?
Yes. The SMARTair Encoder Agent installs on Windows or macOS; on a Mac you open it the first time with Ctrl + right-click and Open (Web Encoder manual), and Safari users visit https://localhost:20809/activate once first (page 9).
What is the difference between the encoder and the portable programmer?
The encoder writes users' cards, tags and fobs; the portable programmer initialises and updates the door devices themselves (Product Overview). Update-on-Card and Wireless Online sites use both.

Additional Information

  • Lead time. This encoder is a special order - the lead time is shown with the price.
  • Plan the server and network. For Web Manager encoding the TS1000 server needs the TESA_APPSERVER service running and ports 8181 and 8182 open (Web Encoder manual), and reaching it from outside the site network takes a VPN (page 2), a fixed public IP or dynamic DNS (page 3).
  • The web encoder licence is a separate item. SNCCLICWEBENC30 covers TS1000 licences up to 10 and 30 doors and SNCCLICWEBENCOD covers 75-door and unlimited licences (Web Encoder manual). We don't list them on our store - ask us to quote the one that matches your licence.
  • Place the updaters. On Update-on-Card, users pick up changes when they revalidate at an online updater, so put one at the main access points (Product Overview).
  • Match the credential first. Confirm the site's card technology before ordering credentials - HID iCLASS and MIFARE don't cross between devices. If the site already has cards, send us a sample.
