ASSA ABLOY SMARTair Portable Programmer - Door Device Initialisation Tool
The ASSA ABLOY SMARTair Portable Programmer (STCPCC) is a handheld configuration device for commissioning and maintaining SMARTair electronic access control devices in the field. It lets installers and system administrators configure SMARTair escutcheons, cylinders, wall readers and other system devices directly at the door, without connecting a computer to the device.
Working with the SMARTair management software, it carries set-up data from TS1000 to each door device: the data goes from TS1000 to the programmer, then from the programmer to the door (Product Overview). ASSA ABLOY lists a portable programmer, or its laptop-based alternative PC-TO-LOCK, among the equipment for Update-on-Card, Wireless Online and Openow sites (page 3).
It's also the tool for emergency openings through a device's programming connection when the battery is low and there's no mechanical key override (i-max datasheet), and for firmware changes between management levels - including moving Standalone devices up to Update-on-Card with an upgrade key (Product Overview, page 3). The tasks are listed under Commissioning & Service Tasks.
Key Features
- Portable configuration device for SMARTair access control hardware.
- Used to initialise SMARTair locks, cylinders and readers (Product Overview).
- Transfers configuration data from TS1000 to each door device (Product Overview).
- Supports system commissioning and maintenance tasks.
- Allows field configuration of SMARTair devices.
- Emergency openings through the device's programming connection when the battery is low (i-max datasheet).
- Firmware changes between management levels, with an upgrade key (Product Overview).
- Essential installation tool for SMARTair technicians.
What's Included
- SMARTair portable programmer unit.
- Connection interface for SMARTair devices.
- Setup documentation.
The TS1000 software licence and any upgrade keys for firmware changes between management levels are separate items.
Suitable Uses
Installers and facilities teams commissioning and maintaining SMARTair Update-on-Card, Wireless Online and Openow sites, and anyone upgrading SMARTair devices between management levels (Product Overview).
Writing users' cards and fobs - that's the USB encoder's job. On a Standalone site, day-to-day administration is done with the programming cards.
SMARTair System Tools and Licences
SMARTair splits set-up and management across a small family of tools and licences. Each one does a different job, on different management levels:
How the Portable Programmer is Used
The portable programmer is used during installation and maintenance of SMARTair access control systems.
- Initialise new SMARTair devices during installation.
- Transfer configuration data from the SMARTair management system to the lock.
- Read information from installed devices.
- Assist with system commissioning and troubleshooting.
It's typically used together with SMARTair TS1000 or Web Manager software and forms part of the installer toolkit required to deploy SMARTair electronic access control on Update-on-Card, Wireless Online and Openow sites. TS1000 is the software that initialises door devices with the portable programmer or its alternative, PC-TO-LOCK (Product Overview).
Commissioning & Service Tasks
- Initialise and configure SMARTair devices (escutcheons, knob cylinders, wall readers and i-gate padlocks) before they're put into service (Product Overview).
- Connects to each device through its 3-pin programming connection (jack / cable) - no wiring to the door is required. The SMARTair wall reader has a jack for the portable programmer and emergency kit (wall reader datasheet).
- Perform emergency openings where a device has a flat battery or a credential cannot be read. The i-max escutcheon needs its programming cable for emergency openings when the battery is low and there's no mechanical key override (i-max datasheet).
- Update the yearly calendar, time zones and operating modes on Update-on-Card devices - an offline wall reader's yearly calendar is updated once a year with the portable programmer (wall reader datasheet). Wireless Online devices update automatically over the wireless link, and Standalone devices run no time schedules or calendars (Product Overview).
- Read back the device audit trail / event log during maintenance visits.
- Change firmware between management levels with an upgrade key: every door device moves from Standalone to Update-on-Card this way with no hardware changes, and knob cylinders and i-gate padlocks move from Update-on-Card to Wireless Online or Openow the same way (Product Overview).
- Used on Update-on-Card, Wireless Online and Openow sites (Product Overview), and on Standalone devices for emergency openings and the firmware upgrade to Update-on-Card.
SMARTair System Compatibility
The SMARTair Portable Programmer is used with a range of SMARTair devices, including:
- SMARTair electronic escutcheons
- SMARTair knob cylinders
- SMARTair wall readers
- SMARTair padlocks
- Other compatible SMARTair access control hardware
PC-TO-LOCK is ASSA ABLOY's alternative to the portable programmer: it connects the door device directly to a laptop or Windows tablet to initialise or update it (Product Overview, page 6).
Compatible SMARTair Devices
Every SMARTair door device we list is set up with the portable programmer. On Update-on-Card, Wireless Online and Openow devices it initialises and updates the device from TS1000 (Product Overview):
On Standalone devices, day-to-day changes are made with the programming cards; the programmer carries out emergency openings and the firmware upgrade to Update-on-Card, with an upgrade key and no hardware changes (Product Overview):

Frequently Asked Questions
On Update-on-Card, Wireless Online and Openow sites, yes - or ASSA ABLOY's laptop-based alternative, PC-TO-LOCK (Product Overview). On a Standalone site, day-to-day changes are made with the programming cards, and the programmer is only needed for emergency openings and upgrades.
Through the device's 3-pin programming connection (jack or cable) - there's no wiring to the door. The SMARTair wall reader, for example, has a jack for the portable programmer and emergency kit (wall reader datasheet).
Yes - that's one of its jobs. The i-max escutcheon uses its programming cable for emergency openings when the battery is low and there's no mechanical key override (i-max datasheet).
Yes - it carries out the firmware changes. Every door device moves from Standalone to Update-on-Card with a firmware change and an upgrade key, with no new hardware, and knob cylinders and i-gate padlocks move on to Wireless Online or Openow the same way. For those two levels the i-max also takes a module, a firmware upgrade and a new internal cover, and wall readers a module and a firmware change (Product Overview).
The programmer initialises and updates the door devices; the USB encoder writes users' cards, tags and fobs (Product Overview). Update-on-Card and Wireless Online sites use both.
Additional Information
- Lead time. This programmer is a special order - the lead time is shown with the price.
- Plan the yearly visit. Offline devices keep a yearly calendar that's updated once a year with the portable programmer (wall reader datasheet); Wireless Online devices update themselves over the wireless link (Product Overview).
- Upgrade keys. A firmware change between management levels needs an upgrade key alongside the programmer (Product Overview) - order it with the job.
- PC-TO-LOCK. ASSA ABLOY's laptop-based alternative connects the door device straight to a laptop or Windows tablet (Product Overview). We don't list it on our store - ask us if you'd rather work that way.
- Build the installer kit. Pair the programmer with the SMARTair USB encoder so one visit covers the door devices and the credentials. For a supported rollout, see our site survey and installation service.
