The McGrath NX1 is a 5-in-1 digital smart lock for hinged timber and aluminium doors with a standard stile. It sits between the slimline McGrath A210 (narrow stile) and the larger McGrath NX5, giving a balanced 76mm-wide body that forgives an imperfect retrofit without the bulk of an oversized lock - one of the reasons it is the most-installed McGrath model in our own installation work across the Gold Coast. It suits residential entry doors and light-commercial doors alike; browse the wider regular front door and internal door categories for context.

Day-to-day access and lock setup run through the McGrath Locks App over Bluetooth as standard - the McGrath-branded build of the TTLock platform. Entry is by keypad PIN (up to 250 codes), MIFARE RFID card, fob, wristband or sticker (up to 1,000), fingerprint (up to 100), unlimited Bluetooth eKeys, or the mechanical key override - two keys and the cylinder are in the box. Remote unlocking and credential management from anywhere are added later by pairing a G3, G4 or G5 gateway; Bluetooth-only versus gateway explains what changes.

The NX1 ships with your choice of an adjustable 60/70mm tubular latch or a 60/50 Mortice Lock, so it can be matched to the door prep in front of you. It suits doors 35-55mm thick and the handing is reversed in the field with an allen key. Key Features

• 5-in-1 access - keypad PIN, RFID card or tag, fingerprint, Bluetooth eKey and mechanical key override. Chapter 03 compares the credential types side by side.
• Standard-stile body, 76mm wide - covers more of an existing cut-out than the slimline models, which is what makes it the forgiving retrofit choice on timber and aluminium hinged doors. Check your stile width against the 76mm escutcheon before ordering.
• Latch or mortice - your choice at checkout. Supplied with either the adjustable 60/70mm tubular latch (simplest retrofit) or the 60/50 Mortice Lock for doors with existing mortice hardware. Tubular latch versus mortice latch is explained in Chapter 01.

• Passage mode - hold the door unlocked for a meeting room, open day or busy household afternoon, then return it to secure mode from the app or keypad.
• Interior privacy button - the electronic locking switch on the inside unit blocks outside credential entry (bathroom, bedroom, home office) until it is released; only the administrator can override it from outside.

What's in the Box

Not suitable for: sliding doors, external pedestrian gates, fully exposed weather positions, or fire-rated doors. The IP65 rating covers the external face only - the interior battery unit is not weather sealed. For a gate choose the double-sided McGrath Ascot; for a narrow aluminium stile choose the A210, A231 or A236 from the narrow frame range.

Battery, Power and Backup Access

• Powered by 4 x AA alkaline batteries (not included) - a 6V pack. Fit four fresh cells of the same brand; the installation guide is explicit that old and new cells must never be mixed. Terry's Locksmiths recommends Duracell.
• Battery life is rated at 12 months at around 10 uses per day. Heavy fingerprint use, a stiff latch or a misaligned door will shorten that - the truth about smart-lock battery life and battery management in the TTLock app explain what actually drains a lock.
• Low-battery warnings are given audibly at the lock and in the McGrath Locks App once the pack drops below 4.6V - read how to read a low-battery fault correctly before assuming the lock is faulty.
• USB-C emergency power on the underside of the exterior unit wakes a flat lock from any phone power bank long enough to enter a code or present a card.

Wi-Fi Remote Access (Optional)

The NX1 has no built-in Wi-Fi. Out of the box it is a Bluetooth lock: you manage it from the McGrath Locks App when your phone is within range, and every PIN, card, fingerprint and eKey works at the door without any internet connection. That is deliberate - it keeps battery life at 12 months and avoids the radio drain that the built-in Wi-Fi NX6W has to manage. Pair the lock with a McGrath gateway and remote access switches on: unlock the door from anywhere, issue or revoke PINs, cards and eKeys while you are away, receive real-time notifications and read the activity log live. Three gateways suit the NX1 - the G3 PoE / Ethernet for a wired connection, the G4 with 4G SIM for holiday homes without reliable NBN, and the G5 dual-band Wi-Fi for most homes. One gateway serves every McGrath lock within Bluetooth range, so it covers the NX1 plus an Ascot on the gate or an A210 on the side door. App Platform and Data Hosting

The McGrath Locks mobile app is a customised, McGrath-branded platform tailored specifically for the McGrath Locks product range, available for iOS and Android(Android 4.3 / iOS 7.0 and above). The app is managed, supported and distributed locally by McGrath Locks in Australia. Australian-based support staff handle warranty claims, app troubleshooting and platform queries - you are not dealing with an overseas vendor. The underlying cloud infrastructure is provided by TTLock, a globally deployed IoT platform; the lock is also listed on the TTRenting and TTHotel platforms for property managers. Dimensions

All dimensions are in millimetres. The drawing shows the front elevation and side profile of the interior and exterior escutcheons and levers.

Escutcheon 234mm high by 76mm wide; overall width to the lever tip 154mm; body depth 25mm exterior and 24mm interior. The drawing labels the handle projection 66.8mm; McGrath's current specification sheet gives 68.8mm - work to 68.8mm. Check backset and door thickness against these figures before ordering; the full-width drawing is in the Dimensions tab. The latch and mortice bodies are dimensioned separately under Fitment Options below.

Fitment Options - Tubular Latch or 60/50 Mortice

Pick your fitment when you order. Choose tubular latch and the adjustable 60/70mm McGrath latch (MLTL6070) comes in the box - that is the one for a bored door with a single round latch bolt. Choose mortice and the 60/50 Mortice Lock with the 147mm faceplate (MLM6050LSS147) comes in the box instead - that is the one for a door cut with a rectangular mortice pocket. Only one of the two is supplied.

One alternative body is stocked: the same 60mm low-spindle mortice with a longer 180mm faceplate (MLM6050LSS180), for a door whose existing cut-out is taller than the 147mm plate will cover. Add it from the Accessories and Spares table; measure the door edge first - how to measure your backset and standard backset sizes in Australia cover it. All three fitments are pictured below, with the two mortice bodies dimensioned against the reference drawing.

What "low spindle" and "high spindle" mean
Not the size of the spindle - both are 8mm square. It is where the spindle hub sits in the mortice case: low down on a low-spindle body, higher up on a high-spindle one. The NX1 takes the low-spindle bodies (MLM6050LSS147 and MLM6050LSS180), because that is where the lever spindle comes through on this lock. The high-spindle body looks near enough identical on the shelf but belongs to the NX5 - fit one to an NX1 and the spindle will not line up with the hub. When you order a spare, check the item code, not just the backset and faceplate.

Reference drawing for the table below: A body depth, B backset, C body height, D pitch (spindle centre to cylinder centre), E faceplate height, F faceplate width, G body width. It is a generic mortice outline for reading the letters, not a scale drawing of either body - the figures in the table are the ones to work from. The tubular latch is not dimensioned here; it adjusts between a 60mm and 70mm backset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the NX1 fit my door?
It suits standard-stile timber and aluminium hinged doors from 35mm to 55mm thick, with either the adjustable 60/70mm tubular latch or the 60/50 Mortice Lock. Measure three things first - door thickness, backset and stile width (the escutcheon is 76mm wide). Measuring your lock backset and the door type compatibility matrix settle most fit questions; for a narrow aluminium stile move to the A210 or A231.

Does the NX1 have built-in Wi-Fi?
No. Bluetooth is standard for local app control, and every credential works at the door without internet. Remote unlocking, remote code issue and live notifications need a G3, G4 or G5 gateway, sold separately. How many fingerprints, PINs and cards can it store?
Up to 100 fingerprints, 250 PIN codes of 4-8 digits, 1,000 MIFARE RFID credentials and unlimited Bluetooth eKeys, all managed from the McGrath Locks App. PINs can be permanent, timed, one-time, custom or recurring - the passcode types - and new permanent codes obey the 24-hour activation rule. Chapter 03 compares the credential types.

What happens if the batteries go flat?
You get audible warnings at the lock and alerts in the app once the pack drops below 4.6V, well before it dies. If it does go flat, touch a phone power bank to the USB-C port under the exterior unit to wake the lock, or use one of the two supplied mechanical keys. My NX1 will not lock after installation - what is wrong?
Almost always installation, not a fault. Straight out of the box the NX1 sits in an always-open state - the handle is free and the lock will not secure - until batteries are fitted and an administrator is set in the app, at which point it switches to secure mode automatically. Additional Information

Set the lock up with the app first. The NX1 is designed to be commissioned from the McGrath Locks App - add the lock, set yourself as administrator and it leaves factory default open state. The keypad still works day to day without a phone nearby, but full functionality (eKeys, timed codes, the activity log, gateway pairing) only exists through the app. Transferring or re-adding a lock matters at a property handover.

Latch or mortice - choose to match the door prep. The adjustable 60/70mm tubular latch is the simplest retrofit over a bored cylindrical door; the 60/50 Mortice Lock suits a door with an existing mortice pocket, with a 180mm faceplate version to cover a larger old cut-out and a rebate kit for rebated door pairs. Handing is reversed in the field. Both levers rotate to suit a left or right hand door with the supplied allen key - the exterior lever turns 45 degrees, the grub screw comes out, the lever rotates 270 degrees counter-clockwise and the screw goes back in the other side; the interior lever simply rotates 180 degrees. A note on the app's vibration alert toggle. The TTLock app exposes an alert toggle that the NX1 hardware does not support; if it is switched on it produces phantom notifications. Leave it disabled - background in why McGrath locks do not support it and the three-step how to turn it off.
