FORGE RD1T Outdoor Smart Rim Lock - IP66, Fingerprint, TTLock
At A Glance
Not Available
The FORGE RD1T Outdoor Smart Rim Lock (FERMOTTA) is a surface-mounted, motorised rim lock built for pedestrian gates and fully exposed outdoor doors. Both halves - the external keypad and the internal rim-lock body - carry an IP66 rating, so it is one of the few smart locks in our range where the inside unit can face the weather too. It opens by fingerprint, PIN code, MIFARE M1 card, a mechanical key or the TTLock app over Bluetooth, and relocks itself after every use.
Because it mounts to the face of the door or gate rather than into a mortice pocket, the RD1T suits retrofits where cutting a mortice is impractical - steel gates, timber gates and doors up to 70mm thick. The one thing to be clear on before you buy: the fingerprint, PIN and card readers are on the outside only. Inside, there is a plain rim-lock body with a turn to let you out. If you need credentials on both faces of the gate, Forge's FORGE RD6 Double-Sided Video Doorbell Smart Rim Lock is the double-sided version.
Remote unlocking, cloud management and synchronised entry records are added with the optional FORGE TTLock dual-band Wi-Fi gateway - see what a gateway actually does in Chapter 08. This is the TTLock version of the RD1; the same hardware is also made for Forge's own Tuya-based app, which is why you will see "RD1" and "RD1T" used by Forge. The platform difference is explained in our TTLock vs Tuya guide.
The fingerprint reader, keypad and card reader are all on the external unit. The internal unit is a rim-lock body with a manual turn for exit - it has no reader of its own. For fingerprint and card access from both sides of a gate, choose the FORGE RD6 or one of Forge's double-sided mortice locks such as the FORGE H10D Double-Sided Outdoor Gate Smart Lock - see the range comparison below.
Forge rates both the external keypad unit and the internal rim-lock body at IP66 - dust-tight and protected against strong water jets. That makes the RD1T suitable for gates where the inside of the lock is also outdoors. IP66 is not a rating for flooding, immersion or high-pressure cleaning, so keep the pressure washer away from it. What the IP numbers mean is explained in Chapter 11, and coastal conditions deserve a separate read.
The weather seal depends on the whole rear face of each unit sitting flush against the door or gate. Do not mount either unit across raised edges, gaps, framing, welds, decorative sections or an uneven surface - the seal will not close and the IP66 rating will not be met. Measure the stile and confirm the strike position, opening direction and mounting space before ordering; our guide to measuring the stile, not the post covers the common gate mistakes.
Access Methods and Smart Features
Remote unlocking and cloud management require the FORGE TTLock Wi-Fi gateway (sold separately). All credentials are read on the external unit only.
Key Features
- Surface-mounted rim lock - the body screws to the face of the door or gate, so there is far less cutting than a mortice installation and it suits many retrofits.
- Motorised automatic locking - the bolt throws itself after each opening, so the gate is never left on the latch by mistake.
- IP66 rated on both the external keypad and the internal rim-lock body - built for gates and doors fully exposed to rain.
- Five ways in: fingerprint, PIN code, MIFARE M1 card, mechanical key and the TTLock app over Bluetooth.
- Stores up to 100 fingerprints, 250 codes and 1000 cards, with up to 9 administrators.
- Access records and user management in the TTLock app; add the FORGE TTLock gateway for remote unlocking and cloud records - what changes when a gateway is added.
- Runs on 4 x AA alkaline batteries (approximately nine months), with voice low-battery alerts and a USB Type-C port on the outside for a power-bank jump start.
- Aluminium-alloy housing; suits doors and gates up to 70mm thick.
- Optional TTLock Bluetooth remote control for hands-free local unlocking from the car or the house.

Suitable Uses
- Pedestrian gates exposed to the weather - side gates, pool-area service gates (not a pool barrier latch - see the note below), courtyard and garden gates - check the door type matrix in Chapter 04.
- Outdoor doors to sheds, workshops, garages and plant rooms where the inside of the door is also outdoors.
- Retrofits where a mortice pocket cannot be cut - steel-framed gates, thin timber gates and doors with existing surface-mounted locks.
- Properties that want timed or one-off codes for trades, cleaners and deliveries without handing out keys.
- Sites that only need credentials on the entry side, with free exit from inside - compare the double-sided RD6 if both sides need a reader.

TTLock App
The RD1T is managed through the TTLock app, available for iOS and Android. ![]()
It is the same platform behind the McGrath, Lockton and Austyle locks we stock, so if you already run a TTLock lock, this one joins the same account. Over Bluetooth you can add and remove users, issue eKeys and passcodes, enrol fingerprints and cards, and read the entry log while you are at the gate. TTLock tips and tricks and the Chapter 14 platform guide cover the app in depth.
FORGE Electrical is an Australian-owned company based in Melbourne, and Terry's handles warranty and support for the FORGE locks we sell. The TTLock app and its cloud service are run by TTLock, a globally deployed IoT platform used by many lock brands. What TTLock is, where your data goes and the platform's published security record are set out honestly in our guides. Forge also makes a Tuya-based version of this lock (the RD1, Wi-Fi) - how the two platforms compare.
Wi-Fi Remote Access (Optional Gateway)
On its own the RD1T is a Bluetooth lock - your phone has to be at the gate. Add the FORGE TTLock Bluetooth to Wi-Fi Gateway (dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz, sold separately) and the lock joins your home network: unlock from anywhere, issue and cancel codes remotely, and have every entry synchronised to the cloud log. Forge's gateway is a G5-type dual-band unit, which sidesteps the band-steering problem that catches 2.4GHz-only gateways. Chapter 08 explains where to place a gateway and what still works when the internet drops; the G2 to G5 comparison helps you decide whether you need one at all. Browse every gateway and bridge we stock.
FORGE Outdoor Rim Locks - Range Comparison
Both are surface-mounted rim locks for gates and exposed doors. The RD6 adds face and palm-vein recognition, a video doorbell and readers on both sides, but runs on Forge's Tuya-based app rather than TTLock - read which platform suits you before choosing on features alone. Forge's mortice-format gate locks (H10D, H1S, H100) are compared on their own pages.

FORGE RD1T - Technical Specifications
Battery, Power and Backup Access
The RD1T runs on 4 x AA alkaline batteries in the internal unit, which Forge rates at roughly nine months - outdoor temperature and how often the motor runs will move that figure, as this guide to real-world battery life explains. The lock announces low battery by voice, so change the batteries when you first hear it. If they do go flat, hold a power bank to the USB Type-C port on the external unit and unlock as normal, or use one of the two mechanical keys - what to do when a smart lock battery dies. General power and battery FAQs are in Chapter 13.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. All three readers - fingerprint, keypad and card - are on the external unit. The internal unit is a rim-lock body with a manual turn, so anyone inside simply turns it to leave. If the gate needs a credential on both faces (a shared side entrance, for example), look at the FORGE RD6 Double-Sided Video Doorbell Smart Rim Lock or Forge's double-sided mortice locks such as the FORGE H10D Double-Sided Outdoor Gate Smart Lock and FORGE H100 Double-Sided Outdoor Gate Smart Lock.
Only if you want to unlock or manage the lock when you are not standing at it. Over Bluetooth the TTLock app does everything locally - users, codes, fingerprints, cards and the entry log. The FORGE TTLock gateway adds remote unlocking, remote code changes and a cloud-synchronised log. Chapter 14 sets out exactly what changes with a gateway.
Yes - Forge rates both units at IP66, which is why the RD1T suits gates rather than just doors. The condition is a flat, continuous mounting surface on both sides so the seals close; a unit mounted across a gap or a raised edge is not sealed and the rating does not apply. IP66 does not cover immersion or pressure washing. IP ratings explained.
The lock suits doors and gates up to 70mm thick. Because it is surface-mounted there is no backset to match, but you do need enough flat stile width for the external unit, a strike position on the post that lines up with the bolt, and the opening direction confirmed. Narrow aluminium gate stiles are the usual catch - read measure the stile, not the post and what to check before you order, or contact us with photos.
Same hardware, different app. The RD1T (this listing) runs on the TTLock app over Bluetooth, with remote access through a TTLock gateway. Forge's RD1 (Wi-Fi) runs on the FORGE Smart app, which is built on the Tuya platform, with Wi-Fi in the lock. We stock the TTLock version so it sits alongside the rest of our TTLock range; the trade-offs are in TTLock vs Tuya - feature comparison.
Additional Information
- Not a pool barrier latch. A motorised rim lock on a pool gate must sit alongside, not replace, the self-closing, self-latching hardware the pool barrier rules require. Treat it as a security lock on a service gate, not as the compliant pool latch - contact us if your gate is part of a pool barrier.
- Auto-lock means auto-lock. The bolt throws itself after each opening, so make sure the people inside know the turn is there and that the batteries are kept up - a flat battery on an auto-locking gate is the classic lock-out, which is why the USB-C port and the two keys matter (keep a key outside the gate).
- Gate alignment first. A sagging gate pulls the bolt out of line with the strike box and the motor will stall; fix the hinges before you blame the lock. Chapter 12 covers misalignment as the number-one cause of a lock that will not throw.
- Two apps, one lock family. Forge sells many models in a TTLock version and a Tuya (FORGE Smart app) version. Mixing the two at one property means two apps, two accounts and two gateways. Decide on a platform first - five questions that decide it.
- Installation. Surface mounting is within reach of a competent DIYer with a drill and the supplied template; a steel gate needs the right drill bits and tapping screws. Terry's offers advice and installation across the Gold Coast.

FORGE RD1T Outdoor Smart Rim Lock - FAQ, Setup and Owner's Guide
Questions buyers, installers and owners ask about the RD1T. For general smart-lock questions see the Smart Lock FAQ (Chapter 13); for TTLock itself, the TTLock Platform Guide (Chapter 14).
Access and Credentials
Up to 100 fingerprints, 250 PIN codes and 1000 MIFARE M1 cards, under up to nine administrators. Administrators enrol fingerprints and cards at the lock through the TTLock app over Bluetooth; codes and eKeys can be issued from the app without visiting the lock once a gateway is fitted.
TTLock supports permanent codes, time-limited codes, one-time codes, cyclic (recurring) codes and custom codes - the six passcode types are described in Chapter 14. A code issued for a tradesperson for Tuesday morning simply stops working afterwards.
MIFARE M1 (MIFARE Classic 1K) cards. Two come in the box and extra FORGE cards are available. Other MIFARE Classic cards and fobs of the same type generally enrol too; how RFID credentials work is in Chapter 03.
On the external unit. It is the fallback for a flat battery or an electronic fault, so keep one of the two keys somewhere other than behind the gate it opens - where the keyhole hides on smart locks and storing the override key.
Remote Access and the Gateway
The FORGE TTLock Bluetooth to Wi-Fi Gateway (TTGTWG5) - a dual-band unit that connects on 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Place it within Bluetooth range of the lock and within Wi-Fi range of your router; Chapter 08 has the placement rules. Other TTLock G-series gateways are the same platform, but the FORGE unit is the one Forge lists for its locks.
Usually the router. Gateways need a stable connection and single-band 2.4GHz gateways in particular fight with routers that merge bands. The dual-band FORGE gateway avoids most of this; the rest is covered in why smart locks drop off Wi-Fi.
Yes. Fingerprint, PIN, card and key all work at the lock with no network at all, and the app still works over Bluetooth when you are in range. Only remote unlocking and cloud syncing pause until the connection returns.
Weather, Fit and Installation
IP66 is dust-tight and resists heavy rain and hose jets, which covers a normal exposed gate. It is not an immersion rating and it is not a corrosion rating - near the surf, salt air is the bigger enemy and the realities of electronic locks on the coast applies to every brand. Rinse the lock with fresh water occasionally and keep the seals seated.
The entire rear face of both units. Each unit must sit fully against a continuous surface - no gaps behind it, no raised frame edge under one corner, no weld bead. On a mesh or picket gate that usually means fixing a flat plate to the stile first and mounting the lock to the plate.
Confirm it before ordering, along with the strike position and the available mounting space, as Forge asks. Because the readers are outside and the turn is inside, the lock has a defined outside face; the strike box mounts on the post on the latch side.
70mm. Thin gates are rarely a problem for a rim lock; it is the stile width and the flat mounting surface that decide whether it fits - see wide or narrow stile?.
Power
4 x AA alkaline, rated by Forge at around nine months. Use good-quality alkaline cells, not rechargeables, unless the manual says otherwise; low-battery voice alerts give you notice. Power and battery FAQs.
Press a USB power bank to the Type-C port on the external unit and unlock with your fingerprint, code or card as normal, then change the batteries. Failing that, use the mechanical key.
Platform and Suitability
TTLock is the platform we recommend most and the one behind most of the smart locks we stock, with a mature gateway range and short-stay PMS integration. Its published security history is set out in Chapter 14 rather than hidden. Compare it with Tuya in which platform is right for you.
Yes, with a gateway. Timed codes per booking, remote cancellation and an entry log are the short-stay essentials, and TTLock integrates with the common property management systems. See Chapter 07 - smart locks for short-stay.
