The Lockwood 5572DX is a fully mechanical keypad mortice lock for commercial doors that need coded entry without any wiring, batteries or electronics. It is the 127mm backset member of Lockwood's Mortice Digital DX family, built for the deep lock cases found on many older commercial doors and heavier door sections.
The lockset pairs a Lockwood 5572 cylinder mortice lock with the Digital DX keypad on the outside face, and is matched with Lockwood 1800 or 2800 series door furniture on the inside. Enter the code, turn the keypad knob, and the latch retracts; from the inside, the handle opens the door freely at all times with no code required.
Because the whole mechanism is mechanical, there is nothing to charge, pair or replace. Decoding Lockwood Model Numbers
Lockwood's DX model numbers look cryptic, but they follow a simple pattern once you know it. Reading a code like 5572DXLSC from left to right:
One caveat: the short backset families count differently (3782, 4782, 5782 and 6782 step through 23, 25.4, 30 and 38mm backsets), but the idea is the same - the first digit steps through the backset options. Code Control - How the Code Works and How to Change It
The 5572DX ships with a factory-set 4 digit code, which you can change to any 4, 5 or 6 digit code of your own. The code lives in a mechanical tumbler chamber behind the keypad - there is no memory chip and nothing to reset electronically. Because it is a chamber rather than a sequence, each digit can be used once per code and the digits can be pressed in any order; the C button always clears a wrong entry and cannot be part of the code. Changing the code is a bench job, and an honest word: it is a fiddly one - the tumblers are small and the sequence matters - but it is entirely doable with the kit and the instructions in front of you. Handing and Ordering
The Lockwood mortice DX platform is not field-reversible: the orderable models are 5572DXLSC (left hand) and 5572DXRSC (right hand), and the correct one must be selected when you order. Stand on the outside (keypad side) of the closed door: if the hinges are on your left, you need the left-hand unit; hinges on your right, the right-hand unit. Mortice DX locksets are commonly specified on commercial fire door assemblies, and the 5572DX suits that egress logic: entry is code-controlled, but exit through the inside handle is always free and single-action. Even so, no lock should be described as automatically fire compliant on its own. Fire performance belongs to the complete tested doorset - the door leaf, frame, lock, furniture, latch preparation and the installer's compliance - not to the lock in isolation.
Before fitting this lock to a fire door, always confirm suitability against the approved fire door schedule, the door manufacturer's requirements and the complete tested hardware combination. No - the 5572DX is PIN-only from the outside, with a free handle inside. If you want a keyed override cylinder (for fire brigade access, a master key system, or simply peace of mind), choose the 3572DXKO instead, noting it is the 60mm backset version.

Codes and Everyday Use
Press C to clear anything already entered, press your code digits, then turn the keypad knob. The latch retracts, the door opens, and the code cancels automatically as the knob is operated - the lock relatches behind you and is never left sitting on an entered code.
That is the clutching action, and it is deliberate. Until a valid code is entered, the knob freewheels rather than driving the latch, so forcing or wrenching it transfers no load into the mechanism. It is one of the reasons these locks survive high-traffic commercial doors for decades.
It is a fiddly bench job, not an on-door job: the keypad comes off the door and the supplied kit repositions the code tumblers, then everything goes back together. Follow page 4 of the Service Manual or our bench method guide, watch the common traps, and budget the time realistically - our guide covers how long a code change actually takes. Any 4, 5 or 6 digit code, with each digit used once per code. Because the code lives in a tumbler chamber rather than a sequence, the digits are order-independent - 2580 and 0852 open the same chamber - so pick digits, not patterns. The C button is the clear key and can never be part of the code. The mechanics are explained in our coding chamber explainer.
You are locked out of the keypad side (the inside handle still opens the door from within, and there is no key override on this model). A locksmith can recover the situation - the keypad comes off the door and the chamber can be read and re-set with the code kit. Ordering, Handing and Variants
Stand outside the closed door, facing the keypad side. Hinges on your left: order the left-hand 5572DXLSC. Hinges on your right: order the right-hand 5572DXRSC. The mortice DX platform is handed at the factory and is not field-reversible, so a wrong choice means a return trip - our guides cover how to determine handing, the US-vs-Australian naming trap, and what happens when the handing is wrong.
Same lock, different backset: the 3572DX is 60mm, this 5572DX is 127mm, and the 89mm size (4572DX) sits between them in the numbering. Measure from the centre of the existing spindle or keyhole to the door edge - two minutes with our backset measuring guide settles it. Ordering the wrong backset is the most common mortice mistake we see; here is why it hurts.
The 3572DXKO adds a keyed override cylinder (60mm backset), and the 3572DXKONCYL is the same lock supplied without the cylinder, for sites that fit their own to suit an existing key system. Key override on high-duty commercial doors is a genuine planning question - our commercial guide covers when key override earns its place.
Not as supplied. On the Lockwood mortice DX platform, hold-back is a key-operated option tied to a cylinder rather than a button on the keypad, so the standard 5572DX (which has no cylinder) does not ship with it. Installation and Door Prep
On a fresh timber door with the manual in hand, a confident DIYer can do it: the mounting instructions and full-size drilling templates for the mortice platform are on pages 19-20 of the Service Manual, covering all three backsets. The 5572DX suits doors from 32mm to 50mm thick. Standard Australian commercial doors sit comfortably inside that range; if your door is outside it (very thin aluminium infill, or an unusually thick solid-core leaf), talk to us before ordering rather than after.

Fire Doors and Egress
Its behaviour is right for it: exit through the inside handle is single-action and never needs a code, which is the pattern egress paths demand. What the lock cannot do is make the doorset compliant by itself - that certification belongs to the whole tested assembly. Because printing a rating a doorset does not hold would be doing you a disservice. Fire performance is tested and certified against complete door assemblies - leaf, frame, lock, furniture, prep and installation together - and it is the approved fire door schedule for your building that says what may go on your door. The 25 year mechanical warranty excludes corrosion damage from coastal air, salt spray and high humidity, so near the water a regular fresh-water wipe-down of the keypad, knob and furniture - and following Lockwood's published care guidance at lockweb.com.au - is what keeps both the finish and the claim alive. Lockwood branded products are covered by manufacturer warranties issued by ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Ltd. Warranty periods vary by product type, with separate cover for mechanical components, electrical and electronic parts, keys, and finishes.

- Everbrass finishes: up to 25 years against corrosion, tarnishing and discolouration.
- Stainless steel, polished stainless steel, chrome plating and anodised finishes: typically up to 10 years.
- PVD and VIVID finishes: typically up to 10 years.
- Symmetry range finishes: typically up to 5 years.
- Decorative finishes (Antique Copper, Architectural Bronze, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Aged Brass, Polished Brass, Satin Brass and related variants): typically up to 2 years against corrosion.
- Unlacquered brass finishes naturally age and change appearance over time. This is not considered a defect.
